In a heartwarming display of community spirit and cultural pride, residents of Hera Street in Mumut Section 371, Morata 2, Port Moresby, celebrated Independence Day in a unique and meaningful way.

Unlike traditional outdoor festivities, this indoor celebration was organized by local youth representatives including Ali Goiye, Emmanuel Junior Opsy Oveke, and Dobby Michael- alongside the neighborhood youth through their Hera M2 Youth Association.

The initiative aimed to bring the national holiday directly into their neighborhood rather than having residents search for celebrations elsewhere around the city.

The event proved that Independence Day is not just for large public gatherings but can also be a heartfelt expression of unity and identity right at home.

A key highlight was the traditional cooking event, affectionately called “Tumbuna Kaikai,” which honored ancestral recipes and local culinary heritage.

The community is divided into two regional groups of Coastal and Highlands to prepare and share these traditional dishes.

Carolyn Uraken, a long-time resident of Mumut Street, expressed deep gratitude to the youth for organizing a safer, more convenient alternative for families.

She shared that “it’s rather safe to celebrate in your own little community rather than travelling around the city to celebrate, as it exposes people to harm’s way and accidents happen all the time.”

She also praised the collective cooking and sharing of food, noting how such gestures strengthen neighborhood bonds and resilience.

Marcus Bonny, a young resident originally from Koiari in Central Province who grew up on Mumut Street, commended the organizers and urged other neighborhoods to follow suit.

He noted that with current law-and-order challenges in Port Moresby and across the country, localized events allow families to celebrate peacefully at their own doorsteps.

Reflecting on the day, he expressed gratitude for his peers' involvement in creating an environment centered on togetherness and safety.

Supported by community leaders, the Hera M2 Youth Association continues to serve as a beacon of hope in a neighborhood once known for its tough reputation.

Beyond the holiday, the group works alongside local families on development and unity initiatives, setting a positive precedent for other streets in Morata while building a safer, stronger future for the next generation.
