ARMED CRIMINAL KILLED DURING FOILED ARMED HOLDUP
Madang police has reported a significant incident within the last 24 hours involving the death of an armed criminal during a thwarted armed holdup.
Provincial Police Commander Acting Superintendent, Robert Baim, says the attempted armed holdup occurred between 06:15 am to 06:30 am at Madang Airport Road, opposite James Burns and the Yaul Manjuwat DCA Settlement, towards the Sewage Garden.
Police Mobile 14 Northern Mobile Group (NMG) on rotational deployment with the Ramu Nickel MCC at Glass House for routine escort duty, encountered the situation at Kubai Junction.
Approximately ten armed criminals, wielding homemade guns, bush knives, and wire catapults, attempted to ambush the Assert Protection Officer (APD) vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, and fired wire catapults at the vehicle.
Despite the vehicle being hit, the APDs maneuvered through the attack. Officers in the rear car witnessed the incident and swiftly responded.
They engaged the armed suspects, closing in on them as one suspect aimed a homemade gun at an officer from a distance while another suspect had already attacked the first car with a wire catapult, lodging it in the left side door.
Madang Transnational Crime and National Criminal Intelligence Units (TCU-NCIU) were alerted by Mobile 14, and upon arrival at the scene, confirmed the identities of the assailants and provided assistance to the wounded, who were transported to Modilon General Hospital Accident and Emergency.
Approximately an hour later, Modilon Hospital Emergency Staff reported that the wounded suspect had succumbed to their injuries.
The deceased body was subsequently taken to the morgue after being pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
The deceased armed criminal was identified as Fabian Morris, aged 24, from Mundu village, Madang Province.
Additionally, He was a known member of an organized gang group operating in Madang, known as ZULU 58, which includes members from DCA, BMR, Mero, Sagalau Abbitor, and Wagol Youths.
The gang is notorious for major crimes in Madang town and its outskirts.
Members of ZULU 58 typically bear gang patches or tattoos on their backsides, symbolizing their affiliation.
Morris was a self-employed criminal who had a history of involvement in various criminal activities, including break and enter thefts, armed robbery, and armed holdups.
While he had no previous convictions, he had several pending investigations against him.
Furthermore, the Madang Transnational Crime Units and National Criminal Intelligence Units had been monitoring Morris due to his extensive criminal record until his demise during the foiled armed holdup.
Meanwhile PPC Baim says this should serve as a warning to criminals attempting to defy the law, asserting that they will not tolerate such disrespectful behaviour toward the law-abiding citizens of the nation and have express their frustration, stating that they are fed up.
“If individuals are armed, the police will not hesitate to take them down to prevent harm to innocent lives.”

US AMBASSADOR YASTISHOCK VISITS POMGEN
U.S. Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu Ann Marie Yastishock visited Port Moresby General Hospital and saw the work of U.S. Army doctors, nurses, and medical specialists who are sharing best practices, learning, and helping patients over the next 10 days as part of a U.S. Army surgical rotation.
Members of the 135th Forward Resuscitative and Surgical Detachment, 65th Medical Brigade, arrived at Port Moresby General Hospital on April 8, 2024, and are working side-by-side with their Papua New Guinean medical peers for nearly a week and a half.
The detachment consists of physicians, orthopaedic and general surgeons, various nursing specialists, and Army medics which included U.S. Army Lt. Col. Stephen Watt, an anaesthesiologist, and the acting detachment commander for the team from the 135th FRSD who said it was a privilege to serve the people of PNG.
“We are all very excited to be here … we feel very privileged to serve and treat the people of Papua New Guinea.”
“We’ve already been sharing knowledge, conducted some classes, (and) exchanged best practice information with them.”
Port Moresby General Hospital and 18th U.S. Army Medical Command are currently working on establishing an agreement to extend the U.S. Army’s partnership with the hospital on a long-term basis.
This surgical rotation was facilitated by the Defense Cooperation Agreement which was signed in May 2023 and ratified in August 2023.
Ambassador Yastishock met members of the detachment who are helping make a difference in the lives of the South Pacific nation’s citizens.
“I want to say a huge thank you for the tour and for allowing us to come in and meet your staff but also this opportunity to meet the team from the U.S. Army.”
“I was very impressed with the areas of the hospital that we saw — the emergency room, the surgical unit, the ICU — and really just how well the staffs have been working side-by-side with each other.”
“Not only working side-by-side but exchanging those important areas of medical services — that is really the whole point of this rotation.”
The detachment rapidly integrated with the hospital’s staff while learning its processes and procedures in less one day.
“We’ve been very impressed with the medical care we’ve seen from the medical staff here,” he said.
Furthermore, the short amount of time the staff and his unit has spent together has already produced learning opportunities from both the Port Moresby General Hospital staff and the U.S. Army medical team.
“We really appreciate the opportunity to observe the care that we’ve seen them provide to patients who have experienced conditions that we don’t traditionally see at our home hospital.”
Meanwhile this is the second surgical rotation.
The inaugural rotation took place in December 2023, less than six months after the Defense Cooperation Agreement between the governments of Papua New Guinea and the United States was ratified.

Prime Minister Marape said details regarding this development will be disclosed in the forthcoming visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister to PNG.

Prime Minister Marape had met with Chinese President Xi Jinping last October in Bejing on the sidelines of the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
President Xi had reaffirmed China's commitment to enhancing cooperation with PNG and expressed China's willingness to strengthen its enduring friendship with PNG and to enhance political mutual trust.

Prime Minister Marape said, "We will be announcing that biosecurity issues have been completely lifted (and) any produce from PNG can now find its way to the Chinese market.”
“If any countries in the region are slow to changing their bio-security standards, China has opened their markets to us."
The prime minister also used the opportunity to issue a challenge to the agriculture sector, urging heads of various commodity boards and agencies to escalate production to meet the burgeoning demand in the Chinese market.
"The challenge is: Do we have the production to meet the demands of the Chinese market?”
