WATOM ISLAND JETTY OFFICIALLY COMMISSIONED WATOM ISLAND JETTY OFFICIALLY COMMISSIONED
The long-abandoned jetty approach on Watom Island in Rabaul District of the East New Britain (ENB) was officially recommissioned recently after undergoing much needed maintenance work. The 32-metre-long jetty once served as the main link for goods and services on the island more than two decades ago was faced with weakening and eroding structures at its approach which prompted urgent response. The project is a counter-funded initiative under the PSIP and DSIP funding with cost totaling to K850, 000 and implemented by contractor NewLand Real Estate Ltd. Works included realigning the edge beam of the approach using boulders and pouring in new concrete to reinforce and stabilize the structure. Officially opening the jetty was the ENB Governor, Michael Marum, Rabaul MP Dr. Allan Marat and Provincial Administrator Levi Mano, and witnessed by the communities. When giving his keynote address, Dr. Marat commended the district administration and Watom LLG for such impact project and added that it is the main gateway for goods and services. “This is not just an infrastructure project but also an economic project funded by the national government and we must take ownership and look after it,” said Marat. Also speaking during the official opening was Watom LLG President, Enos Pulumen who expressed his gratitude for such development. “This jetty has been lying idle for years and has crippled communities in terms of accessibility; transporting cocoa, copra, fish, and other fresh produce to the mainland.” “We are also happy that we can now have access to larger vessels bringing services to the island,” said Pulumen. Meanwhile, the acting district administrator, Freddy Lemeki, also commended the contractor and the district infrastructure sector for successfully completing the jetty within its scheduled timeframe. He added that the jetty will complement the Watom Ring Road, which was also launched recently with work expected to begin soon.

DWU STUDENTS UTILIZE OLD TYRES FOR BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT DWU STUDENTS UTILIZE OLD TYRES FOR BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT
Divine Word University's Environmental Health Department, under the guidance of Willie Susuki, a lecturer at the department, has undertaken a unique beautification project utilizing old tyres. Susuki explains that the choice of old tyres for this project stems from their versatility, ready availability, and eco-friendliness. "When considering materials, we weighed factors like sustainability, cost-effectiveness, durability, and aesthetic appeal.” “Tyres stood out because they can be upcycled to create various structures like benches, planters, and sculptures, reducing waste and giving them a new life." Susuki outlines the process involved in transforming old tyres into finished products for campus beautification, which includes collection and sorting, cleaning, and preparation, cutting and shaping, assembly and construction, and finishing touches. He emphasizes the importance of these steps in ensuring the quality and longevity of the final installations. “The display of recycled tyre products on campus not only contributes to the beautification effort but also aligns with broader environmental initiatives.” Susuki highlights the significance of these installations in celebrating World Environment Day and raising awareness about sustainability and environmental conservation. He emphasizes their visual impact, educational significance, and potential for community participation. Additionally, beyond their aesthetic value, recycled tyre creations offer several other benefits to the DWU campus and its community, according to Susuki. “These include environmental education, cost savings, and fostering innovation and creativity among students and faculty.” To ensure the sustainability and longevity of the recycled tyre installations on campus, Susuki suggests implementing regular maintenance, encouraging ownership among the campus community, and planning for future expansion opportunities. Meanwhile Susuki emphasized the main message behind this project: promoting sustainability, resourcefulness, and innovation. He asserts that by repurposing materials that would otherwise end up in landfills, the project not only reduces waste but also encourages a shift towards more sustainable consumption habits and creative solutions to environmental challenges.

MOROBE PHA ADDRESS STAFF SHORTAGE & PATIENT CONCERNS MOROBE PHA ADDRESS STAFF SHORTAGE & PATIENT CONCERNS
Morobe Provincial Health Authority (PHA) says the hospital has acknowledged the pressing issue of bed space shortage and prolonged waiting times for patients seeking emergency care. Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kipas Binga, attributes these challenges to the significant number of vacancies within the hospital, totalling 860 positions. Adding that despite completing 400 of these vacancies, there remain 460 positions to be filled, with 200 vacancies allocated to ANGAU Hospital and another 200 across other districts health facilities. The aged infrastructure, still in use after 16 years, further compounds the strain on resources. Dr. Binga emphasizes the importance of public understanding regarding the patient-to-nursing officer ratio at the hospital. However, he firmly states that the limited vacancies should not excuse any nursing officers from fulfilling their duties, particularly in the Accident and Emergency department. Meanwhile Dr. Binga urged patients to report any instances of nursing officers neglecting their duties while on duty. This proactive approach aims to ensure accountability and maintain the quality of care provided, despite the staffing challenges faced by the hospital.

The police in Mt. Hagen, Western Highlands Province (WHP), have arrested a couple of suspects involved in the sale of counterfeit cigarettes. The arrests occurred at an outskirt market in Top Town, just outside Hagen town, where authorities apprehended individuals engaged in the illegal trade. The case took a dramatic turn when the suspects attempted to bribe the arresting officer with a substantial sum of K2000. However, their attempts were turned down by the arresting officer, leading to further charges against them. Last week, law enforcement officers in Mt. Hagen made a breakthrough in combating the illegal sale of counterfeit cigarettes. Based on information gathered by British American Tobacco (BAT), the police targeted a market in the outskirts of the city, within New Town. There, they apprehended a group of suspects engaged in selling counterfeit cigarettes. Upon bringing the suspects to the police station for processing, two individuals associated with the arrested suspects attempted to bribe the arresting officer with K2000 in exchange for the release of the detainees. However, their bribery attempts quickly turned into arrest and subsequent charges. Among the suspects taken into custody, one was found in possession of exhibits directly linking him to the sale of counterfeit cigarettes. The suspects were later released on bail but are now awaiting their court appearance in the Mt. Hagen District Court. The investigation into the case continues, with authorities focusing on uncovering the extent of the counterfeit cigarette trade in the region. Both the sale of counterfeit products and the attempted bribery represent serious offenses under Papua New Guinea's legal framework. PNG WATER TANK UNDERGOES MAINTENANCE PNG WATER TANK UNDERGOES MAINTENANCE
PNG Water supply tank reserve near Borogaino Road, North Hohola is currently undergoing refurbishment due to the accumulated rust from the past years and roof sheets dispatched from the roof. The PNG water supply tank has endured more than a decade and sustained its capacity to store and distribute water throughout the city residence through the tough weather over the years. The lengthy years without maintenance or conservative measures to maintain the tanks durability and safe water supply has accumulated erosion from metal constructs within the tank. The adequate portion of chlorine applied to nourish and purify the water over time had eroded the primary roof steel beams, purlins, causing roof sheets to fall into the tank from harsh weather conditions. The Nele Construction has been engaged to handle the maintenance work by PNG Water. The Nele Contractor’s Supervisor Mr. Peter Sengi from his observation shared the high rust buildup was considered an alarming concern for consumption with scattered roof sheets scattered within the water tank. Due to the accumulated rust residue within the tank of 30,000 - 50,000 litres water, it is harmful for use, so the water has been offset for almost a week to completely drain out the tank for refurbishment. “The Tank needs maintenance fast but also need to be handled accordingly to improve its capacity to store water for a longer period of time without any maintenance work any time soon.” “The roof is hanging by a thread with rust consuming the roofing joints from internal to external.” “We are currently repairing the weak roof joints to provide safety while my team cleans the tank interior from underneath.” According to Mr. Sengei, the maintenance duration will take two months to eradicate rusts and restore the entire roof to assure an efficient maintenance job adequately and effectively. Mr. Sengei conclude by ensuring that his team are capable of completing and fulfilling the job main agendas and only regrets that the task duration of 2 months seem long but is appropriate to effectively complete the Task at hand.

The flow in the consumption of inexpensive liquors sold by alcohol traders and homebrewed alcohol has drawn attention said from Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Epenes Nili. These products have been linked to public disturbances and impaired judgment among the youth. To address this, PPC Nili has prepared a report to present to the alcohol licensing board, advocating for measures to prohibit the sale of these cheap alcohol products.
