NEW VEHICLE FOR ANGAU CANCER SERVICES

Kumul Petroleum followed through on its commitment with the presentation of a brand new Toyota Hilux 4WD Double Cab Ute for ANGAU National Cancer Services this week. The vehicle purchased at a value of about K168, 500.00 will provide additional resource to support the work of the unit particularly that of the new Radiation Oncologist provided for, by funding under a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Ministry of Health and Morobe Provincial Health Authority, that was signed on 19 August 2020 to support the improvement of the ANGAU National Cancer Services. At this occasion, Kumul Petroleum Managing Director Wapu Sonk acknowledged the leadership of health workers and specialists to ensure that they continue to serve the health needs of communities and said that this initiative is a part of the greater contribution by Kumul Petroleum to enhance the health and wellbeing of the people of Papua New Guinea to have access to cancer treatment services through its support to ANGAU National Cancer Services. Dr. Kipas Binga, Chief Executive Officer of Morobe Provincial Health Authority acknowledged Kumul Petroleum for keeping its commitment under the signed MOA to continue its support to the health sector in Papua New Guinea. “With Kumul Petroleum’s support, we are about to bring in a key resource that has not been fully available for the past three to five years including the services of a fulltime Radiation Oncologist. The last patient to complete this radiation treatment was on 21 March 2017 following the departure of the then Radiation Oncologist.”

MADANG PAGEANT ON AGAIN; MALE CATEGORY INTRODUCED

The annual Miss Madang Pageant, a prestigious fashion event in Madang is set to commence this year on the 24th July at the Madang Resort’s Haus Win Restaurant as was confirmed by Maureen Hill, a pioneer charity supporter and Philanthropists in PNG and Madang. Describing it as the Social Event of the year, Hill said the annual pageant will be introducing a male category which will now be called the ‘Mr & Miss Madang Pageant’ 2021. “We will be having the pageant again this year and we are happy to announce a new title to this event”, said Hill. Madang Rotary Club’s President Steven Kaipa said the pageant welcomes 5 male contestants and 5 female contestants, between the ages of 18 to 25 to enter. “The pageant will commence on the 23rd July with a traditional category where contestants will be dressed in their traditional attire, which they will be judged on,” added Steven. The annual Madang Charity event has raised funds towards various Health and Education projects, previously raising funds towards the Blood Bank at Madang’s Modilon General Hospital. “This year, we would like to raise funds towards purchasing equipment’s for Madang Province’s Community health centers”, said Steven. The Madang Rotary club has requested for sponsors, who would like to sponsor a contestant for the pageant. “It is a request for business houses, organizations, institutions, women’s groups, sports groups and individuals to either sponsor a contestant, purchasing a table or donating towards prizes and raffles,” said Steven. The pageant’s committee has chosen the Madang Resort’s Haus Win restaurant as a suitable venue to host a large gathering whilst adhering to the COVID-19 protocols. Managing Director of the Melanesian Tourist Services Ltd, a patron of the Papua New Guinea Institute of Medical Research, former politician and long-time member of various charity organization in Madang and Papua New Guinea, Sir Peter Barter described the event as a necessary cause to bring people together. “During this tough COVID-19 pandemic that we are all going through, many people have lost their sense of being a part of a community and events such as this allows people to come together whilst adhering to the COVID protocols”, said Sir Peter. Assistant General Manager of the Madang Resort, Vince Barubia said that there will be ample spacing between the tables and every person attending the dinner should have a face mask with hand sanitizers throughout the restaurants. “We successfully had the Miss Madang Pageant last year and we were privileged enough to have our Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare attend as our guest of honor”, said Barubia. He concluded that the pageant last year was a success following the COVID-19 protocols and we will be practicing that again this year.

MISS PACIFIC ISLANDS PAGEANT FINALLY LAUNCHED AMIDST COVID-19 PANDEMIC DELAYS

The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant PNG (MPIP PNG) finally launched its local pageant on Thursday night at the Alibi Bar & Grill Restaurant Downtown after a year of absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pageant has two main functions, the empowerment of women through education & mentoring which is done through the pageant and its scholarship fund and secondly the empowerment of women through economic activities and SME. MPIP PNG Chairperson Molly O’Rourke said MPIP PNG is a non-profit organization and therefore depends heavily on corporate and Government support to maintain the work of the pageant in the country. Unfortunately, MPIP PNG could not stage a pageant or the Project Runway last year due to the tough economic conditions brought by the pandemic. “The past two years have been challenging as COVID-19 took its toll on the pandemic lifeline as many businesses were affected by the pandemic leaving drastic economic decisions in order to maintain their businesses.” One of the foundations of the platform is the Scholarship Fund which was introduced in 2012. However due to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the pageant was not able to provide scholarship for the young women because the pageant did not raise funds through the crowning of Miss PNG. [video width="1920" height="1080" mp4="https://pnghausbung.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/MVI_8716.mp4"][/video] “The pageant was very fortunate this year when the Founder of the Institute of Business Studies Sir Mick Nades came forward by signing an agreement of K2.1 million worth of scholarships for 5 years to help young women in PNG complete their education at the IBS." “The first two recipients who qualified for the degree program were announced in April this year." The pageant also focuses on giving back to the communities through the ‘Give Back Initiatives’ which includes the Bomana prison visits specifically to the women’s unit and food and delivery supplies to the Friends of Port Moresby General Hospital for the COVID19 patients. “70% of the women behind bars are due to Gender Based Violence as they are victims as well as perpetrators." Mrs Rachael Marape, wife of Prime Minister, James Marape during her keynote speech said MPIP PNG has not only produced wonderful young female ambassadors of PNG but has worked as a vehicle to empower Papua New Guinea women. Mrs Marape said the MPIP Education Scholarship fund has awarded well over K1.3million scholarship to over 400 women in colleges and universities over the years since its inception. “I also commend the MPIP PNG Project Runway program that provides a platform for young entrepreneurs in the fashion industry to showcase their designs." Meanwhile, during the launch, Minister for Housing & Urbanization, Justin Tkatchenko pledged K20, 000 to the MPIP to support the local pageant this year. “As the member for Moresby South, I am supporting this local pageant and also supporting the local women of this country who want to use this platform as a stand to get out there to empower other women as well." An additional surprise was in store from Bmobile when the National Marketing Manager, Mr Devan Kula repriced their role as the official communications partner and by becoming the naming rights sponsors to the runway event with a sponsorship package valued over K200, 000. “Over the last five years, we have been proud sponsors of the MPIP PNG and in that time, we’ve watched it gain much ground and fight to empower women in Papua New Guinea providing an amazing platform for upcoming women leaders and furthering their education through their scholarship program."

WISIL AND KAPUTIN IN TIGHT CONTEST FOR ONE AVAILABLE OLYMPIC SPOT

The race between Toea Wisil and Rellie Kaputin for the one place available in the Tokyo Olympics is heading for a tense climax with both athletes having just one more competition opportunity on 19 June. The automatic qualifying standards in both the 100m and long jump are very high and have proved elusive for both athletes so far. Wisil’s seasons best time for the 100m is 11.57 compared to the qualifying time of 11.15; and for Kaputin the automatic qualifier is 6.82m and she recorded a seasons best jump of 6.28m on June 5. Countries with no qualified athletes are allowed to enter one athlete under the Universality rule . The selection policy for PNG in such a situation is to choose the athlete with the highest world ranking, but the issue is complicated by the rules surrounding field event entries.. “For the 100m there is no minimum standard for a Universality place” said Athletics PNG President Tony Green but for field events, athletes are not automatically accepted. World Athletics Technical staff will assess the standard of the athlete compared to others in the field and make a decision. Kaputin currently has a world ranking of 58 when the list is filtered to include a maximum of three from any one country, whereas Wisil ranks 89 on the same scale. Kaputin is hoping to improve on her seasons best in her final competition in Townsville on Saturday where it is thought that a mark of 6.40m + would boost her chances. Wisil has been competing in Florida recently and is understood that’s she is considering a race in North Carolina on Saturday. BPNG, CEFI, GGGI, AND NEW ZEALAND TEAM UP FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INCLUSIVE GREEN FINANCE POLICY FOR PNG’S BANKING SECTOR

Papua New Guinea this week launched a new project to develop a National Inclusive Green Finance Policy for the banking sector to boost financial inclusion and guide public and private sector investment towards Low Emission and Climate Resilient Development. Bank of Papua New Guinea Assistant Governor Ellison Pidik representing Mr. Loi M Bakani, Governor of BPNG, H.E Dr. Nathan Ross New Zealand Acting High Commissioner to PNG, Mr. Saliya Ranasinghe, Executive Director, Centre for Excellence in Financial Inclusion and GGGI´s Deputy Director General Ambassador Jenny Kim, jointly initiated the project. Inclusive Green Finance is a new and evolving policy area that countries are beginning to devise and implement policies, regulations and national strategies to mitigate or build resilience to sweeping environmental, health, social and economic effects of climate change. The project will deliver two main outputs: first, a green taxonomy based on PNG’s goals and priorities; and second, and a diagnostic report on the state of green finance in PNG. Both are expected to steer financial flows (loans, equity, and guarantees) towards technologies and services that contribute to the government’s financial inclusion and green growth goals. Bank of Papua New Guinea Assistant Governor Ellison Pidik representing Mr. Loi M Bakani, Governor of BPNG pointed out, “We understand that dual threats of financial exclusion and climate change are recognized as key barriers to financial stability. As a member country of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI), and implementing the work on Green Finance, we have identified Inclusive Green Finance (IGF) as a key priority area in the financial inclusion space. Similarly, Acting High Commissioner of New Zealand H.E. Dr. Nathan Ross stated that “Climate change is the most significant security and development issue facing the Pacific region, and we can only meet its challenges through collective action. This includes the private sector, and the Inclusive Green Finance Policy will be an important step towards helping businesses to contribute to PNG’s low-emissions, climate resilient development.” Ambassador Jenny Kim states GGGI´s role in the project will be on scaling up access to green finance, “we hope that this project will serve as a strong foundation for future cooperation between New Zealand MFAT, BPNG, CEFI, and GGGI for more ambitious and impactful cooperation on climate change.” At the event, an MOU was signed. The MOU between GGGI and CEFI is under the initiation of the regional program, Low Emissions Climate Resilient Development Program (LECRDP), a regional collaborative effort between GGGI, NZ/MFAT and the governments of Kiribati, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji to support regional resilience and emissions reductions, by working with these Pacific Islands Countries to transition to inclusive, low emissions and climate resilient development.

STRONG AND ROBUST PNG TIES WITH CHINA COULD GROW AND PROSPER IN COMING YEARS, AGREE NA LEADER PATRICK PRUAITCH AND NEW CHINA AMBASSADOR

Papua New Guinea’s strong and robust bilateral relationship with China over the past 45 years should grow and prosper in coming years. This was the view of the leader of the National Alliance Party, Patrick Pruaitch, and China’s new Ambassador to PNG, His Excellency Zeng Fanhua, when they met in Port Moresby on Wednesday. In line with the long-held PNG and NA policy of, ‘friends to all and enemies to none’, Mr Pruaitch expressed support for China’s multi-billion dollar ‘One Belt, One Road’ initiative as an avenue for regional prosperity and for enhancement of PNG’s relations with China and the entire Asian region. Mr Pruaitch acknowledged that investment by a Chinese Provincial Government contributed to development prospects of the Frieda River copper-gold project, in Sandaun Province. He expressed concern the deposit, first discovered in the 1960s, has yet to commence development. The NA Leader said: “The National Alliance Party is fully supportive of private sector investments from China and other countries in PNG’s natural resources, along with investment in other economic sectors, including agriculture and infrastructure. “As the world’s second largest economy, China has been the biggest contributor to global economic growth and last year our close neighbours, the 10-nation Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), became the largest trading bloc with China, ahead of the European Union, the United States, Japan and South Korea. “An active PNG role in trade and investment in the world’s fastest growing region is a key to enhanced economic growth in PNG and this swill contribute to higher levels of prosperity for the people of PNG,” he said. Mr Pruaitch expressed his thanks to Ambassador Fanhua for China’s support in assisting PNG manage the Covid-19 pandemic through the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) and donation of vaccines. While raising concerns regarding the PNG’s law and order, the newly arrived Chinese Ambassador to PNG told Mr Pruaitch that China wished to see bilateral relationships grow further. He believed PNG needed partners to develop its mineral and petroleum sectors in view of PNG’s well-known resources wealth.
