PORT MORESBY CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

Hundreds of Port Moresby city residents joined the rest of the world in white during the Niupela Pasin Walk and Yoga for Life, and celebrated the International Day of Yoga today (Sunday) in the city. The walk is part of the two-day health and fitness activities lined up in its honour. Led by NCD Governor Hon. Powes Parkop with UNDP’s deputy resident representative Edward Vrkic, students, athletes, expatriates, regular participants and others converged at Murray Barracks as early as 4:00am for the walk to Era Kone. The theme for 2021 United Nations-sanctioned International Day of Yoga is Peace and Harmony. PNG Kumuls star Stargroth Amean was amongst young students and others who testified on how the practice of yoga helped them overcome health, learning, fitness and mental challenges in life. Speaking at the end of the program, Amean said his practice of Yoga played a huge part in his success on-field and off. Governor Parkop said the platform of yoga should be amplified in communities around the city and the entire country to address violence, lawlessness and health problems. He expressed a grave concern that these problems are major impediments to the city and country’s progress. “The fact in this country is our people are very prone to violence, anger, jealousy, envy and hatred. We do not have the mental balance to overcome it. This is a big challenge in developing and advancing our country. We have to get the balance right through embracing peace and harmony,” he said in honour of the World Yoga Day. He drew attention to the poor physical form our leaders are in, saying if one cannot look after his or her own life, how can they do it for the common good? Sharing similar sentiments, Mr Vrkic said thousands of people around the world practise Yoga every day and Port Moresby is no exception. He emphasised that practice of Yoga encourages people to be peaceful and kind. Active City Development Programme founder Ms Fazilah Bazari said even though yoga has lots of health benefits, in PNG the emphasis is on how yoga can also be successfully used to promote behaviour and mindset change. "Many women, men and youth have testified to it," she said.

ATHLETES RETURN TO FULL TIME TRAINING BOOSTS PNG’S PREPS

The return of Poro Gahekave and Messach Fred to full time training is a tremendous boost to Athletics PNG’s preparations for the World Cross Country Championships and Pacific Mini Games next year. After 18 months back home in PNG since graduating from Lubbock Christian University, Gahekave has returned to the United States where she can properly focus on her training in an environment that is more conducive to the attainment of sporting success. [caption id="attachment_10791" align="alignnone" width="993"] Poro Steeplechase[/caption] With the cross-country season in the USA being held from August to November this presents the 2019 Pacific Games triple gold medalist with a great opportunity to get an excellent preparation for the February 2022 World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst NSW. Meanwhile, Pacific Games 1500m silver medalist Messach Fred has also resumed serious training after spending a year in Queensland pursuing an educational opportunity, during which time his training took the back seat. [caption id="attachment_10795" align="aligncenter" width="994"] Messach and Coach[/caption] Messach has now moved to the Oceania Athletics High Performance Training Centre at the Gold Coast and has joined the Gold Coast Run Co Club. ”Athletes usually come to the Centre on a trial basis, and we expect to formalize a longer-term scholarship for Messach by mid-July,” said APNG Secretary Philip Rehder. Messach is part of a squad of about 40 runners who are going to different places to run on all kinds of terrain. [caption id="attachment_10798" align="aligncenter" width="994"] Mens 1500m[/caption] Messach mentioned that after returning to full training now he is really enjoying the trainings at this time which is quite varied but perfect to keep him in excellent focus. Oceania AA are meeting all the costs including accommodation, coaching support, and living expenses with APNG contributing financially from its budget for the World Cross Country Championships. [caption id="attachment_10794" align="aligncenter" width="1072"] Messach[/caption] In the meantime, World Athletics are providing a project Grant of $40,000 USD over two years for Athletics PNG’s distance program for which the budget included the Kerowagi Training Camp, support to a smaller group training in East New Britain (Utmei) , some officials training ,and overseas training support for one male and one female athlete.

PNG RECORDS 72 NEW COVID-19 CASES ON THURSDAY JUNE 17 – TOTAL CASES AT 16,933

Papua New Guinea has recorded 72 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Thursday June 17, increasing the total number of cases to 16,933. The cases were reported in nine provinces with Hela province reporting the highest of 23 cases followed by Milne Bay with 16 cases. Manus reported 11, Gulf 10, Eastern Highlands four, Morobe and National Capital District three cases each whilst New Ireland and Southern Highlands reported a single case each. Of the 72 cases reported, 50 are males and 22 females. Their ages range from five to 84 years. The country’s COVID-19 cases now stands at 16,933 with 173 known deaths. A total of 16,309 recoveries have been recorded with 451 cases still active over the last 21-day period. To date, 130,467 people have tested for COVID-19. All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 177,799,519 including 400,028 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll stands at 3,848,629 including 9,497 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The Commissioner of Police and Controller of the PNG COVID-19 National Pandemic Response Mr David Manning said delays in receiving reports from PHAs and testing facilities still remain a concern for the National Control Centre. He said the National Control Centre’s Surveillance Team is constantly identifying gaps and is working with provinces to ensure limitations that may be associated with data interpretations are minimized. Meanwhile, Chimbu, Southern Highlands, Northern, Jiwaka, Milne Bay, Gulf and Hela remain least reporting provinces. Mr Manning has urged the respective provincial health authorities to rectify this situation and ensure that the provincial COVID-19 responses including testing and vaccination are ramped up and reporting done on a regular basis. PNG COUNCIL OF CHURCHES SUPPORT COVID-19 VACCINE PROGRAM

The Papua New Guinea Council of Churches (PNGCC) declared its support for the COVID-19 vaccination, following a one-day conference in Port Moresby on Thursday. “We define ourselves as churches, living and working together for the common good of people and society, therefore we affirm our support for the COVID-19 vaccination and declare our trust in the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccination as a lifesaving tool which protects human from severe sickness and death due to COVID-19,” said the PNG Council of Churches in a statement issued on Friday. “Our affirmation is guided by the theology of ‘Love for Neighbours’ to reach out to others and the theology of ‘Liberation’ to reduce the suffering of our neighbours inflicted by the COVID-19 pandemic.’’ The churches recognize the 99 per cent reduction in COVID-19 deaths because of high vaccination rates in countries like Israel, United States and United Kingdom and that over two billion people all over the world have so far been vaccinated against COVID-19. Noting, that the PNG Council of Churches said it stated also that most of PNG’s health workers, essential workers, people with underlying illnesses and aged population are not turning en-masse for vaccination despite being more at risk of dying from the virus and also frontline workers in the fight against COVID-19. The churches also note that a lot of misinformation is being circulated through the social media that is leading to hesitancy of the public to get the vaccine, thereby endangering the lives of millions of people in PNG. The churches also recognizes the negative social and economic impact that COVID-19 has caused in PNG resulting in the loss of lives and livelihood of Papua New Guineans. Furthermore, the church leaders through PNGCC thoroughly examined the COVID-19 vaccination from the Christian theological, cultural, social, academic, medical and political perspectives, and have specifically analyzed the doubts and suspicions that were raised. Based on this knowledge as well as from the information provided by trusted medical experts, the PNGCC has decided to adopt the five principles of the COVID-19 vaccination which are - Solidarity, Duty, Safety, Access and Communication: Solidarity: The PNGCC strongly affirm global and national call and support for protecting humankind and protecting the people from serious illness and deaths from COVID-19 infection and that these protective measures fully confirm with Christian principles. Duty: The PNGCC accepts that this is the duty of all persons who are eligible for immunization to join our nationwide SLEEVES UP CAMPAIGN to help stop COVID-19 in PNG to protect themselves and their loved ones from severe sickness and death. It is the duty of the government to provide critical health and social support to uphold the welfare of its citizens. Safety: The PNGCC acknowledge, based on advice from credible, recognized and reputable medical experts, the safety and effectiveness of all COVID-19 vaccines, and that countries with high immunization rates are beginning to see a decline to almost zero of serious cases and deaths due to COVID-19 infection; and that common side effects are not severe and normal. Access: The PNGCC acknowledges that deadly diseases like COVID-19 can only be controlled and stopped by vaccinating most of the population, especially high-risk groups. It therefore appeals to all responsible departments, agencies and organizations to ensure that full access to COVID-19 vaccine is provided to all Papua New Guineans especially the high-risk group in all provinces. The PNGCC calls on local communities and their leaders to work with respected Christian organizations to ensure adequate awareness, access and uptake of COVID-19 vaccinations. Communication: The PNGCC appeals to the media, communities, and key leaders to seek the correct information, and not to spread misinformation and rumours that can cause confusion among our communities and ultimately endanger the lives of millions of people. The PNGCC calls on the media to fully engage the national and international religious leaders and medical experts and institutions to address community concerns about COVID-19 vaccinations. The PNGCC has also thanked the extraordinary support provided by the Church Partnership Programme, National Department of Health, UNICEF, World Health Organisation, The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFA) to protect the lives of Papua New Guineans from COVID-19. “We are equally grateful to all governments and organisations who have provided funding for COVID-19 pandemic response and vaccination activities in Papua New Guinea. “We pledge our complete support to assist the government of Papua New Guinea and local communities to address community concerns, to work with all partners to ensure that all people are reached and vaccinated consistently in line with the PNG National Deployment and Vaccination Plan for COVID-19 vaccine, and to advocate strongly for additional health and social welfare initiatives to improve the lives of all people,’’ the PNG Council of Churches said in its statement. SP PNG Hunters player Jokadi Bire continues to improve in a Gold Coast Hospital after surgery. Jokadi is now able to communicate with the doctors and nurses at the hospital with the help of his teammates by his side. Hunters management remain in constant contact with Jokadi’s family, who continue to receive the first updates on his progress. SP PNG Hunters General Manager Scott Barker would like to thank all the supporters of back home in PNG and across the world for their continued messages of support and positivity for Jokadi’s recovery.

TIKTOK OWNER BYTEDANCE SEES ITS EARNINGS DOUBLE IN 2020

An internal memo released to staff showed that the firm's total revenue jumped by 111% to $34.3bn (£24.7bn) for 2020. The figures underscore TikTok's continued global popularity. It comes as ByteDance and several other Chinese technology giants have come under increasing pressure from governments around the world. ByteDance also saw its annual gross profit rise by 93% to to $19bn, while it recorded a net loss of $45bn for the same period. The net loss was attributed to a one-off accounting adjustment and not related to the company's operations. ByteDance co-founder Zhang to step down as CEO Chinese regulators rein in fintech platforms China tech giant's shares slide over ancient poem The memo also showed that ByteDance had around 1.9bn monthly active users across all of its platforms as of December last year. A ByteDance spokesperson confirmed the figures to the BBC. White House pressure The massive popularity of TikTok has meant that ByteDance has been scrutinised by governments around the world, including in the US and China. On Thursday, Reuters reported that an executive order signed by President Joe Biden earlier this month would force some Chinese apps to take tougher measures to protect user data if they wanted to stay in the US market. It came after President Biden revoked an executive order from his predecessor Donald Trump that banned Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat in the US. The ban faced a series of legal challenges and never came into force. Instead, the US Department of Commerce said it would review apps designed and developed by those in "the jurisdiction of a foreign adversary", such as China. It should use an "evidence-based approach" to see if they pose a risk to US national security, President Biden said. During the previous administration, President Trump regularly attacked ByteDance, accusing TikTok of being a threat to US national security. Politicians and officials raised concerns about users' personal data being passed to the Chinese government. TikTok has denied accusations that it shared user data with Beijing. Beijing scrutiny In April, Chinese regulators called on 13 online platforms, including ByteDance, to adhere to tighter regulations in their financial divisions. It came as part of a wider push to rein in the country's technology giants. The authorities said the aim was to prevent monopolistic behaviour and the "disorderly expansion of capital". For many years, Beijing had taken a hands off approach to encourage the technology industry to grow. Company shake-up In May, ByteDance announced that the company's CEO and co-founder Zhang Yiming would step down and transition to a new role by the end of the year. In a letter to employees, Mr Zhang said he would be succeeded by fellow co-founder Rubo Liang. "The truth is, I lack some of the skills that make an ideal manager. I'm more interested in analysing organizational and market principles, and leveraging these theories to further reduce management work, rather than actually managing people," Mr Zhang wrote in a message on the company's website. "Similarly, I'm not very social, preferring solitary activities like being online, reading, listening to music, and contemplating what may be possible," he added. The move marked the biggest shake-up at the Chinese technology giant since its launch almost a decade ago.
