BSP PAY - A COMPONENT OF PAU NEW WEBSITE

The premier institute established for learning and research in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific launched its new upgraded official website www.pau.ac.pg on Wednesday 30th June, 2021. During the launch, PAU Vice Chancellor Professor Roal Lozano said, “while the launch of the new website maybe small but significant, it is a landmark development for the university.” Not only does the site have a modern look and feel, it is a one-stop shop for information on course programs, student life, campus activities and it now offers a new payment service for tuition and other fees – BSP Pay online payment service. [caption id="attachment_11337" align="aligncenter" width="992"] Pay Tuition Fee page on new PAU Website[/caption] BSP Digital General Manager Nuni Kulu congratulated PAU on being the first university to integrate their website to the BSP Pay solution. She explained BSP Pay is an online payment gateway, which is accessible to all BSP customers to use their mobile phones to process payment directly from their bank account, with no dependency on a bankcard. BSP Pay delivers real time payments to the university’s account, which is appealing to both students and the university. BSP Customers can log on to www.bsp.com.pg and use their unique BSP ID to opt in for the BSP Pay service. PAU Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Lalen Simeon thanked the PAU ICT team for incorporating different components into the new website including banking services like BSP Pay. “Without BSP’s support and guidance, this wouldn’t happen. Fees have been an issue for us because most parents live in rural areas. If they can use their mobile phones and the new website to make payments that would be a bonus for us,” explained Professor Simeon. As a registered BSP Mobile Merchant, the university also offers another alternative payment option for students and parents to pay for school fees and other services via BSP Mobile Banking *131# using their school code 50041. BSP Pay allows any BSP account holder in PNG to make payments online securely and instantly, without the use of card details. This service can be used to pay for products and services on any registered BSP Pay merchant’s website. PM ENCOURAGES PUMA TO PROMOTE LOW COST FUEL AND ENERGY SUPPLY

The Prime Minister James Marape says the Government wants a partner or investor like Puma Energy that can help the Government’s vision to create a low cost fuel and energy sector in the country. And he has encouraged Puma Energy to remain and continue investing in PNG’s domestic fuel and energy market. PM Marape said this week at Puma Energy’s Napanapa oil refinery outside Port Moresby on the occasion to mark 14 million man hours of incident free operations at its sites throughout the country over the last seven (7) years. “I am happy to be here to witness and celebrate this world class safety milestone achieved by Puma Energy PNG staff and its contractor staff. “On your milestone achievement of 14 million man hours without any lost time in incident, think big and think positive, expand and promote the fuel and energy needed for our domestic customers,’’ he said. “Let me thank Puma Energy and those of you who have been working diligently in the last two years when we were stressed through the COVID-19 pandemic. “You remained at work and delivered to our country through your contractors, and the subsidiaries that work off the main Puma Company and I think the network of companies who feed off Puma Energy have been the beneficiary of the standard of safety and you have conducted yourself and you deserve special commendations. “Going forward I would like to encourage Puma Energy in our country to also step out of where you are today. You are at a site in our country where it’s the first in as far as oil and gas business is concerned the first refinery in our country. “You have acquired these assets and you have a feel of what it is all about and as a Government, my major focus going into the future and something that is critically important and to anchor our economy, is lower cost of power and lower cost of fuel in our country. “We are looking for business partners who could assist us in filling this gap by finding solutions to lower the cost of fuel and lower the cost of power. And so I would like to take this opportunity to sound it out to people and Puma Energy, you are already here with us,’’ said PM Marape. He said there are many ways Puma Energy could partner the Government and partner others in the industry. “As a Government we are on the search for partners who could assist us in lowering the cost of energy, more so fuel of all kinds whether its jet fuel, fuel for ships, fuel for cars and the costs of fuel, energy and power must come down in our country. “There is no secret and that is the intention of my Government. That is why I am strongly advocating for a specific portion of our domestic market of gas and for us to ensure that domestic market gas is secured in new gas fields we sign up and or translate that to companies that are already in the energy space into cheaper energy and fuel. “So at this juncture without imposing upon you Puma Energy being the major importer and processor of fuel in our country the space is there for you and we look forward to partners who can be serious players in downstream fuel processing in the country,’’ he said. PM Marape said that PNG produces oil and gas in the country and yet we have expensive fuel that is based out of Singapore pricing when we may be able to look for our own pricing. “So Puma Energy that is something you can work in your board room and see whether you could be a partner of choice for us going forward. “Whilst you do not have upstream gas and petroleum areas, you are already in the downstream area so how can you partner the Government and Government bodies like Kumul Petroleum, who are agents for seeking petroleum gas deals, you can fit in that gap as you have a refinery facility here and how you can utilize the gas and oil extracted locally here. “I am encouraging you not to sell out and remain in our country going forward where some of our 10 million people will be needing fuel and energy and we need competition and a robust competition is good for our customers. “I look forward to Puma Energy continuing to serve our country and clocking another safety man hours. “Congratulations to Puma Energy, your management, and individual workers for contributing to this milestone safety record,’’ said PM Marape.

APPOINT COMPETENT ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER; UPDATE ROLL: AITSI

Transparency International Papua New Guinea (TIPNG) welcomes the Government’s actions to publicly advertise the position of the Electoral Commissioner this week. This action comes on the back of TIPNG raising concerns over the importance of having competent and stable leadership within the PNG Electoral Commission (PNGEC), if we are to have any chance of delivering a reasonable National General Election in 2022. The success of the 2022 National General Elections will greatly depend on our efforts to restore the public trust in the PNGEC, and we can start by ensuring we undertake a transparent and rigorous process to appoint a leader that can restore integrity to the office and the organisation. “On June 2nd, during the Moresby Northwest By-election, TIPNG drew the Government’s attention to the need for the Electoral Commission Appointments Committee, chaired by the Prime Minister, to convene as a matter of urgency to recruit and appoint a permanent head of the PNGEC. On Tuesday 29th June the position was advertised by the Committee in the newspaper with applications closing on Friday 6th August 2021,” said the Chair of TIPNG, Peter Aitsi in a statement. “The people of Papua New Guinea rightly expect that the four Members of the Committee; namely the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, the Chair of the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Appointments, and the Chair of the Public Services Commission, will commit to safeguard and protect the integrity of the appointments process. Along with the appointment of a head of the Electoral Commission, immediate efforts must be directed to update electoral roll, this is equally critical,” said Mr Aitsi. TIPNG is calling on the Prime Minister and Government to give priority to 2022 National General Elections by restoring the integrity of the administration of the PNGEC and to have the existing roll made accessible to the public so voters can ensure that their names are listed, while protecting the enrollment process for new voters coming on to the roll.

STAGAJAH BAND DROPS NEW HIT SONGS

Stagajah Band, the awesome four-some and highly accomplished musicians of Papua New Guinea have officially released their Rumination E.P (Extended Play) this morning. The new EP features four new songs; Go Back, Sentani Cinta, Away From and Una Mauk which is a remake featuring legend Amon Serum. The songs have a mixed blend of Reggae, Electro Pop and Acoustic fused with contemporary PNG local music. Stagajah Band Song-writer and rapper Gaix said that the promo single titled ‘Go Back’ is basically about losing a loved one, explaining that the lyric is about trying to make up for your loss and trying to go back to fix things but it is too late. Gaix said what inspired them to write the EP was during this lockdown period where a lot of people went into isolation and quarantine, it gave them time to think critically about the challenges and hardships going on in the daily lives. “So the songs are pretty much love songs, more to do with relationships involving our families, friends or peers”, added Gaix. Stagajah Band will be dropping this first single as a promo. The EP was released today with an aim to get feed backs from their fans. “We’ve lost a lot of loved ones, a lot of friends during this period and this is a great song to dedicate to them to think about them and to remember them”, added Gaix. “The song is now out on Spotify and YouTube so you can stream the song, download and help us your local artists”, said Gaix. Following the formation of the group in mid-2014, Stagajah Band claimed the ‘Newest Group of the Year’ and ‘Listeners Choice Group of the Year’ at the annual YumiFM PNG Music Awards in 2016. “Our recent achievements at the YumiFM PNG Music Awards were the ‘Best Duo/Group of the Year’ Awards in 2019 and 2020 respectively. The group was formed by Statz who is the Music Producer, Gaix, who is the groups Song-Writer and Rapper, Jay Ray who is the lead vocalist and Stonky who later joined the team as a vocalist and Song-Writer. Some of their Hit songs are, Angel SN which featured Nathan Nakikus, Tehene’e featuring Sharzy, Yu Nau featuring Dr Wiz and heaps more. “To our fans, thank you for staying loyal and sticking with us from day one. PROVIDING A COOLER PLACE FOR CHILDREN AT POMGEN

The Children Cancer Unit and Pediatric Ward at Port Moresby General Hospital received a kind donation of electrical supplies which included air conditioners, kettles, microwaves, a 42-inch TV and a Digicel decoder. These electrical items will not only support the two wards but will also be used at the Operating Theater, ICU and Emergency Department. The donation was made this week in the presence of the Executive Manager of CHM Braden Chin, POMGEN CEO Dr. Paki Polumi, Deputy Chairlady POMGEN Kathy Johnston and other staff from CHM, Port Moresby General Hospital and Friends of Pomgen. Mr. Chin said on behalf of CHM, we are very happy to donate to the Port Moresby General Hospital especially to the Children’s Cancer Unit and Pediatric Ward. “Every year these two wards help to treat a high number of young infants and children dealing with a variety of health problems and various forms of cancer. It is because of the hard work of these amazing doctors, nurses in each ward that every year they are able to save lives and provide a high level of comfort and care to the children” expressed Mr. Chin “We are happy to know that some of these items will be used in the Hospital’s ICU and Operating theatre and Emergency Department to provide comfort and care for the patients and staff there “. He also added that we hope our support helps to contribute to a more comfortable and pleasant environment for the children, patients and hardworking medical staff in these wards. Kathy Johnston who represented the Board of POMGEN and Friends of POMGEN expressed her appreciation to CHM Group Ltd and also to the FOPG for facilitating this presentation and other donations recently to POMGEN. “FOPG is the charitable arm of the hospital. They are doing a great job working on our resource needs and reaching out to the community for assistance which we have been receiving overwhelming responses so far”. “But today we come together to formally thank CHM who have donated much needed electrical supply to not only our Children Cancer Unit and Pediatric Ward but also to our ICU, ET and OT” said Ms. Johnston. She also added that the Children’s Cancer unit is a special place where the children need abundance of healthcare and love and to see the way CHM and the community have run to assist is really heartwarming. We know our partnership with CHM is just beginning. Like any other good friendship we will nurture it and continue to be humbled by your generosity said Ms. Johnston. Dr. Paki Molumi CEO POMGEN concluded the presentation by explaining the needs at the hospital and thanking CHM for stepping in to assist. ”POMGEN is such a big Hospital that needs a lot of resource to run its operations and with the budget constraints, we are looking at other ways of supporting the hospital. That is why the Board of Port Moresby General Hospital endorsed FOPG to be a charity arm of the hospital in order to fill in those gaps that are not being catered for so that we continue to provide services that we provide to our people”, said Dr. Molumi. Dr. Molumi also expressed that some of the children in the Cancer Unit and Pediatric Ward stay for 1 -2 years depending on the diagnosis and treatment for the type of cancer or disease that they have. “We treat them, feed them and entertain them while they are with us therefore, we are very thankful that CHM came onboard to fill one of the gaps especially in the Children Cancer Ward. We hope this partnership with CHM and Pomgen will continue in the long run as well as other organizations who have stepped in to assist us particularly during the Covid – 19 Pandemic”. Dr. Molumi also went on to thank FOPG for the initiative of getting support from the community and facilitating other donations coming into POMGEN.

CLRC LAWYER ATTAINS MASTERS IN LAW AT AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY

Thirty-one-year-old Benjamin Bofeng is the second lawyer from Constitutional and Law Reform Commission to attain a Master of Laws and Development from the University of Melbourne, Australia. A mix-parentage of East Sepik, Morobe, and Western Highlands, Mr Bofeng is a recipient of the 2020 Australian Awards Scholarship, who successfully completed the 15 months-long program in March 2021. The Program critically considered the theory of development through Law with an emphasis that sustainable means and local PNG ways of attaining development should be prioritized instead of merely relying on introduced, foreign ideas, Mr Bofeng said. “The Program has assisted me to give back to CLRC and the nation by ensuring that law reforms and reviews should consider development of laws in a PNG-centric manner with the focus on developing local jurisprudence in PNG,” he said. Now promoted to Senior Legal Officer within the Drafts and Advisory division, Mr Bofeng thanked the governments of Australia and PNG for the scholarship and CLRC as the facilitator. In his congratulatory remarks last week, CLRC Secretary Dr Mange Matui said the achievement is a fitting reward for Mr. Bofeng for being a hardworking and committed employee since his engagement in 2014. “It has always been the focus of past and current management to provide opportunities for further studies so that as an organization we create a conducive environment for staff to prosper and progress,” he said, adding plans are underway for similar long-term studies for more staff next year. Dr Matui also extended similar assurance to new staff this year including lawyers Gedion Max, Collin Yak, Kenny Kaipas, Betrina Gelua, and Salome Pamler, HR director Gilbert Hickie, and payroll officer Consita Sohomai if they decide to stay on with CLRC long enough.
