A group of Papua New Guinean journalists and media professionals have departed for Australia as part of a special International Media Visit (IMV) which aims to strengthen coverage and understanding of the National Rugby League (NRL) ahead of PNG’s planned entry into the competition in 2028.
The delegation will participate in a program designed to provide firsthand exposure to the Australian rugby league landscape, including the operations of the NRL and the role of media within the sport.
The visit will allow participants to engage with experts from key organizations across the rugby league ecosystem, helping them gain deeper insight into how the competition functions and the media's role in delivering weekly sports coverage.
Additionally, it will enhance the skills and knowledge of PNG journalists and editors, supporting more informed, accurate and in-depth reporting on rugby league as anticipation builds for the PNG Chiefs’ entry into the NRL in 2028.
The media visit also forms part of the broader Pacific Rugby League Partnership (PRLP), which seeks not only to support PNG’s participation in the NRL but also to generate wider social and economic benefits for the country.
The program will strengthen professional ties between Australian and Papua New Guinean media organizations while providing the delegation with valuable access and insights ahead of the PNG Chiefs joining the competition.
