Papua New Guinea (PNG) Kickboxing Federation through the National Gaming Control Board (NGCB) "Last Man Standing competition", has launched five (5) grand final title belts for winners of the division finals.
The launch signifies the transition from amateur kickboxing to the professional level under the Headhunter KO promotion fights.
The launching was officiated by PNG Boxing Federation President, Stanley Nandex and Chief executive officer (CEO) of Sports Foundation, Micah James, at Taurama Aquatic Centre in Port Moresby yesterday.
Nandex said the competition initially had 400 fighters from the four regions of PNG fighting through an eliminatory round. The competition has now reached the semi-finals where only 40 fighters are to proceed to the finals. Of the 40 fighters, five winners will be given the belts.
“We named the competition as ‘Last Man Standing’ because fighters are required to fight until the last man stands. Of the 400 fighter, 40 fighters will now go into the finals. The fighters will be fighting in their respective divisions of 60kg, 65kg, 70kg, 75kg and 80 KG,” Nadex explained.
Furthermore, Mr. Micah said it was an historic milestone for the combat sport and PNG because the titles belt paves the way for PNG belt title holders to represent PNG on the global stage.
“Today is also a day for celebration of the identity of discipline, perseverance and untamed spirit of combat accelerating from one level to another level,” he said.
“This belt signifies structure, professionalism and sanction authority. They establish pathway for champions to defend their titles and represent PNG on global change.”
These belts showcased that PNG has established world class standards in administration and combat sports regulations,” said Mr. Micha.
He also thanked Nandex for promoting and developing kickboxing in the country.
“On behalf of PNG government, through Sports Foundation, I would like to thank President of Kickboxing, Stanley Nandex for his tireless effort in promoting and developing kick boxing in PNG over the years.”
Moreover, as the fighters become professionals, they open doors for sponsors for the different division respectively.
Citi Boutique became the first business to sponsor two of the division after its General Manager, Saif Jugari presented a sum of K2,000 for winners that will emerge after the finals.
