MEMBER FOR NIPA-KUTUBU DR. BILLY JOSEPH COMMENDS CRCEG FOR POROMA-KUTUBU ROAD UPGRADE; CALLS FOR END TO COMMUNITY SABOTAGE

Member of Parliament for Nipa-Kutubu and Minister for Defence, Dr. Billy Joseph, has commended China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) for the high quality of work being delivered on the upgrading and sealing of the vital Poroma-Kutubu road corridor.

Dr. Joseph expressed his satisfaction after a personal site inspection, noting that the level of infrastructure construction aligns with his consistent advocacy for projects that deliver top quality and true value for public money.

However, the MP issued a stern warning to local leaders and communities along the corridor, demanding an immediate end to the sabotage of contractors. He reminded residents that infrastructure development is not a resource project where landowners can levy demands.

"Road construction is not a mining or petroleum project where you bring your demands," Dr. Joseph stated. "The financial risks are high, and profit margins are small. Due to the historical attitude of our people, very few foreign companies are willing to operate in Nipa-Kutubu. Local leaders must step up, allow the contractor to do their job, and protect these essential services."

Dr. Joseph challenged the citizens of Nipa-Kutubu and the wider Southern Highlands Province to confront the systemic obstacles that have long stalled regional growth, stating that communities have frequently been "their own worst enemies."

"Many provinces and districts across Papua New Guinea are developed because they welcome foreign investors and development partners," Dr. Joseph added. "In Southern Highlands, investors are terrified to come—even when political leaders try to bring them in. This is due to constant roadblocks, tribal fights, and politically motivated destruction. We can, and must, change this narrative."

The MP urged the educated elite, local leaders, and prospective political candidates to practice mature politics at the appropriate time, rather than disrupting active national infrastructure projects. He concluded by reiterating that embracing international development partners like CRCEG is the only viable path to securing long-term economic prosperity and connectivity for the district.
