Prime Minister (PM) James Marape has called for unity and stability following the death of Works and Highways Minister the late Solan Mirisim, saying the government must continue to function effectively despite the loss of a senior leader.
Speaking during the customary and family commemoration ceremonies in the Telefomin district on Sunday, Marape said that while the nation mourns, leadership responsibilities to the people must continue without disruption.
“Life must go on, even as we carry our loss,” the Prime Minister said. “Our responsibility to our children and our people must remain strong.”
Marape thanked the Department of Works and Highways, provincial and district leaders, and the Mirisim family for observing customary processes, saying respect for culture strengthened national unity during difficult times.
He described the late minister as a leader whose influence extended beyond Cabinet, noting his ability to work across political, cultural, and religious lines.
The Prime Minister said continuity in national development programs, particularly those championed by the late minister, remains a priority.
He then reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to its development philosophy of “leaving no place, no person and no child behind,” stressing that the vision must continue beyond individuals.
Marape also welcomed discussions on education-centred initiatives in the late minister’s name, saying education provided long-term benefits that outlived political cycles.
“With elections approaching, leadership must remain responsible and focused,” Marape said.
He concluded by assuring the family and community that late Solan Mirisim’s contribution to Papua New Guinea would continue through the work he started and the values he upheld.
