Prime Minister James Marape has told political leaders that elections and titles are temporary but true leadership is measured by legacy, service, and responsibility to the people.
Speaking at customary commemorations for the late Works and Highways Minister Solan Mirisim in Telefomin on Sunday, Marape said the passing of the senior minister was a reminder that leadership must focus on long-term impact rather than short-term political gain.
“Leadership is not defined by one election or one term,” Marape said. “Reputation, service, and integrity endure.”
The Prime Minister said the late Mirisim’s leadership stood out because it was grounded in service to family, community, and country and not driven by political ambition.
He said moments of national loss should force leaders to reflect on how they govern and what they leave behind.
“Our responsibility to our people, especially our children, must remain strong,” he said.
With Papua New Guinea approaching another election cycle, Marape urged leaders at all levels to maintain unity, stability, and responsible governance.
He warned that division and self-interest risk undermining public trust in leadership.
The Prime Minister also supported proposals to establish an education initiative in Mirisim’s name, saying education was the most enduring investment any leader could make.
“Education shapes future leaders and strengthens the nation long after we are gone,” he said.
Marape concluded by saying Solan Mirisim’s life offered a clear standard for leadership in PNG.
“He will be remembered not by his title, but by the service he gave and the people he uplifted,” the Prime Minister said.
