Minister for Energy and Kairuku MP, Hon. Peter N. Isoaimo, has backed grassroots rugby with a K10,000 cash contribution to the Hiritano Super Nines (HSN) competition.
Minister Isoaimo made the commitment yesterday, September 18, during a visit to the competition.
He said sports play an important role in keeping young people engaged, disciplined and away from drugs, illicit activities and other behaviours that can contribute to serious health and social problems in communities.
He said the Hiritano Super Nines provides an important platform for young people to come together, compete through sport and build positive relationships within their communities.
“Sportsmanship teaches our young people that there can only be one winner at the end of the day, but what matters is participation, discipline, respect and how we conduct ourselves,” Minister Isoaimo said.
He said the K10,000 support would assist the HSN administration with the costs of running the competition and help ensure the tournament continues to provide opportunities for local youths.
HSN President Rolf Maino thanked Minister Isoaimo for his financial support and for recognising the importance of grassroots sports.
Mr Maino also acknowledged the Minister for taking time out of his busy ministerial schedule to attend and witness the Hiritano Super Nines competition in Kairuku.
The support highlights the role of grassroots sporting competitions in providing young people with positive activities while strengthening community spirit and social cohesion across Kairuku.
