This is one thing he intends to bring in and make it work if he gets elected as governor in this 2022 National General Election. “Our policy is a bottom-up policy, and our slogan is hope for the hopeless,” said Mr. Dangima. He said the city has seen a lot of settlement issues, law and order issues and people just wanting to make a living but are unable to do so because of the challenges brought about by some laws and regulations that don’t favor citizens. He added that his focus is to help the little people, the ones living in settlements, the homeless people, and the struggling small business owners and those wanting to get into small businesses. “That’s why we want to have a proper town planning system in place,” he said. That’s because to really address this, he said proper urban planning is key to it and proposes to make the necessary changes to have an effective and robust planning system in place that would improve health care, proper water and sanitation into the settlements, proper education systems to help those who did not make it in school and better strategies to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). MAGPIES RETURN TO POM AFL MAGPIES RETURN TO POM AFL
The Magpies have return to the Colts Oval with fresh new faces after two years outside of the premier Port Moresby Australian Football League (AFL) competition and just last weekend saw the football club from Gerehu had their first match of 2022 Moni Plus AFL season during the opener. According to the club’s Founder Mr. Bruce Sovara, the team had to cancel its participation in the competition when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020. There were a lot of disturbances brought about by the measures and restrictions put in place during that period of time that saw the club unable to get back into the competition. Nevertheless, after a long break from the competition the club is back with new players replacing the older ones that have stepped out of the sport or moved on to other clubs. “We had to start all over again. Most of the players are new and come from all over Gerehu from stage one to stage seven who have come forward after we put out a notice to any interested boys who want to play with the club,” said Mr. Sovara. Mr. Sovara himself is a legend in the game and he aims to shape up the boys to be a formidable team in the city competition. He is a Papua New Guinea (PNG) representative himself having played with the Mosquitoes men’s national team for the 2002, 2008 and 2011 International Cups and has a lot of experience and skills that he can pass on to the young guns. Meanwhile, the club for the time being has put in a team for the men’s A- reserve grade and the focus now is to put together a women’s team as well. A notice for interested girls to be part of the club has already gone out and the club is expecting some good response.

The Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) rigorous selection process of interested persons to run under its party banner for the 2022 National General Election, has seen only two female intending candidates to contest in the election selected. The two female candidates are Dorothy Tekwei for the West Sepik Regional seat and Angela Nelson for the Alotau Open seat in Milne Bay province. According to Party Leader and Governor for National Capital District (NCD), Powes Parkop, the two females were selected among a huge number of people that submitted application requesting the run under the party banner in the election. “Many have put up their hands to be endorsed by our party. On the record about six hundred expressed interests,” said the governor. “Processing it was not easy, choosing was even harder so I want to say that we have gone through a very exhausting process. We have done our best because the country and the people deserve the best and nothing else.” Parkop said the job of providing leadership is not easy as it is a very serious responsibility for a person to take; therefore, the party executives must make sure that only the ones they consider having a chance to do very well in the election, are chosen as indenting candidates. Meanwhile, other notable intending candidates chosen by the SDP include Fr. Simon Dumarinu for Central Bougainville Open seat, outgoing SDP Party President Mr. Kenn Mondiai for the Eastern Highlands Regional Seat, and former National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) boss Mr. Joseph Eladona for the Samarai Murua Open seat in the Milne Bay province. MOZZIES CONTINUE REIGN AS WORLD CHAMPIONS MOZZIES CONTINUE REIGN AS WORLD CHAMPIONS
The Papua New Guinea (PNG) senior men’s Australian Football League (AFL) national team, the PNG Mosquitoes, continue to reign as world champions now that the biannual International Cup has been further postponed to 2024. According to PNG AFL Commission, the Mozzies will remain world champions for another year and the women’s Flames national team, remain in the top 10 of the world rankings. The PNG Mosquitoes will now be defending their title next year after beating New Zealand in 2017 in the last International Cup. The next event was to be held in 2020 but due to the COVID- 19 pandemic, it was deferred to 2023, and now to 2024. In the meantime, the PNG AFL Commission is advising all its participating regions to continue running their competitions to keep the players in form and ready to defend the cup for the third time. However, one AFL Association President is not too happy with the postponement of the International Cup to 2024. The Port Moresby AFL Association President Mr. Douglas Lai said the postponement will further delay plans for preparations for the selections for the national teams. “Its sad, we planned out our program to the International Cup, but the delay is all to do with Australia and the COVID-19 impacts there, not with us. In PNG we are all go to go.” Meanwhile, to compensate for that Mr. Lai said the Commission should be looking at concepts to keep the athletes in shape and focused on the game through organizing more national or regional sporting events for players to take part in, and at the same time select the up-and-coming ones to form the national teams.

THE NEED FOR SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT THE NEED FOR SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENT
The need for sustainable investment or supporting community initiatives to better the lives of people long after a resource project ends, was one of the main topics discussed during a recent media workshop on the media coverage of the extractive industry. A presentation by Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF) at the recent two days Chamber of Mines and Petroleum Media Workshop, highlighted the need to report or put out more information to the public on what extractive resource companies are doing in the project impact communities in terms of community initiatives apart from the usual extraction of raw materials. OTDF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Havini Vira said they are focusing on supporting the people in Ok Tedi in Western province to further improve their lives after the Ok Tedi Mine ceases operation in about 7 years’ time. He said the OTDF covers projects and initiative that support the delivery of services to the people. OTDF has a good network with the communities that enables them to provide support to the villages especially. “We have village planning committees in each of the villages and what they do is they have meetings and nominate projects. Then we will assess them, identify priority areas, and support them on that,” said Mr. Vira. The sustainable investment in these areas is important as it is also a measure of how the funds coming from the project (OTML) is being used to the benefit of the people at the community level and so far, Mr. Vira informed that a lot has been done under their development priorities for 2021 to 2023, which includes SME support for women and youth groups, agriculture and other community initiatives funded through OTDF for the people. OTDF was formed as an independent entity to manage Community Mine Continuation Agreement (CMCA) funds for and on behalf of the communities. It manages community development benefits from OTML operations on behalf of the 158 CMCA villages. OTDF delivers projects through a unique partnership between mining, the people and government. It is mandated to ensure the wise and sustainable use of wealth created from mining operations is available for community development and for future generations. Meanwhile, the Chamber of Mines and Petroleum Media Workshop themed “PNG Resources: Resilience, Transition, Growth,” was attended by most of the companies in the mining and petroleum sector along with experts in this area and representatives from the various media houses in the country. The workshop covered a range of topics including the up-and-coming LNG and mining projects in the country, landowner issues, and the ways in which the media and the extractive resource companies can work together in better reporting the developments in the mining and petroleum sector. The two days media workshop was held at the Loloata Island Resort just outside of Port Moresby city from the 21st to the 22nd of April.
