MARAPE APPEALS TO LANDOWNERS TO REOPEN HISTORICAL TRACK
Prime Minister James Marape is asking the Kokoda Track landowners to reopen the track, saying that keeping it closed is hurting the people who depend on trekking to earn money and also stopping tourism income from coming into the country.
The Prime Minister said this when responding to questions from Oro Governor Gary Juffa in the recent parliament sitting. Governor Juffa asked him about the Governmentâs plan to pay the K50 million promised to the landowners. This promise was made by the Government in 2011 to pay for the use of the land the Kokoda Track is on.
PM Marape said he understands this is a long-standing problem and confirmed that he received a petition from the landowners in September this year, just before they decided to close the track.
âKokoda Track is the most visited tourist spot in our country,â said PM Marape. âWe donât have many tourist attractions, but Kokoda Track is special. It brings visitors from around the world. We must honor the promise made to pay K50 million to the landowners of Kodu.â
He added that the Government will work to find the money to pay what is owed. In the meantime, he asked the landowners to reopen the track.
The Prime Minister explained how the closure of the Kokoda Track is affecting local people. He said that many villagers rely on trekkers for income. For example, carriers, who help carry bags, earn K300 to K400 per trip. Villagers living near the track also sell food and crafts to trekkers and offer places to rest and eat.
âI am asking the landowners to lift the ban because it helps no one. Instead, it stops people from earning money and hurts our tourism industry,â PM Marape said.
Governor Juffa explained more about the issue in Parliament. He said that in 2013 and 2014, the Government paid K5 million each year to the landowners as part of the K50 million promise. However, no payments have been made since then. This led the landowners to close the Kokoda Track on 16 September this year in protest.
Governor Juffa said the closure has caused problems for both the people living near the track and the tourism industry in Papua New Guinea. Tourism brings in money that helps many businesses and families, but with the track closed, this income has stopped.
PM Marape reassured that the Government is committed to finding a solution and making sure the K50 million is paid. He said reopening the track will help everyone while the Government works to fulfill its promise.

Mr. Uvovo described the partnership as pivotal in positioning Papua New Guinea as a premier global tourist destination. He stated that aligning efforts with ICSA would provide a seamless travel experience for international visitors while strengthening Papua New Guineaâs appeal as a destination for tourism and investment.

âThe strategy acknowledges the role of men and boys in reducing GBV. It is crucial that we engage them in these efforts,â she noted.
The government's commitment extends to the provincial level, where 17 provinces have developed GBV action plans. Provinces such as East Sepik and Southern Highlands have allocated K500,000 and K200,000 respectively for GBV initiatives over the next four years.
Meanwhile, the funding for GBV initiatives has increased to K11.7 million in 2024, and the National GBV Secretariat has mapped out 50 safe houses across 19 provinces to improve operational efficiency and support systems.
Looking ahead, K7 million has been committed for 2025 to support over 20 organizations addressing GBV. Grant applications will open next month, and a comprehensive review of the National GBV Strategy is underway. The revised version is set to launch in 2025.

KUMULSOFT, FROM SPREAD SHEETS TO SOFTWARE SOLUTION
Kumulsoft, a remarkable journey of how a simple idea transformed into a software solution that is redefining asset management in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
In an exclusive interview with PNG HAUSBUNG, Mr. Paul Muingnepe, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) shared the story of Kumulsoft, of how it began in the early 2000s.
Mr. Muingnepeâs story began in 2007 when he worked as a Fixed Assets Officer at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG). Tasked with overseeing the university's vast portfolio of assets, he faced significant challenges during audits.
"I couldn't pin down the actual existence of the assets properly," he revealed.
"We were using spreadsheets, but there was no proper system to track them."
This frustration led Mr. Muingnepe to take matters into his own hands. Using Microsoft Access, he created a basic database to streamline the asset management process. What started as a simple tool quickly showed immense potential for broader application.
Recognizing the need for a more comprehensive solution, Mr. Muingnepe spent years refining his initial creation. Partnering with skilled software engineers, he transformed the desktop application into a sophisticated, web-based platform that could track assets in real-time and meet global standards.
Today, Kumulsoft is trusted by government departments and private companies alike for its efficiency, transparency, and adaptability. Its latest version of Fix Asset Management Solution (FAMS), 2.16, features cloud capabilities and ensures compliance with the evolving demands of modern asset management.
"Weâre building from a global perspective so that when changes happen, we are not affected but are moving with the trend," Mr. Muingnepe explained during the interview.
Building a software company in Papua New Guinea, has its unique challenges. High development costs, maintaining global standards, and gaining the trust of clients were just some of the obstacles Mr. Muingnepe faced.
"Software development is demanding," Mr. Muingnepe said.
"People often underestimate the time, focus, and effort needed to build lasting solutions."
Yet, his perseverance has paid off with Kumulsoft as now seen as a symbol of Papua New Guineaâs potential for technological innovation, proving that local solutions can compete on the global stage.
When asked about his advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, Mr. Muingnepe answered, "Put your head down and put in the work. Every great innovation starts with solving a real problem."
Kumulsoft is not only about developing software, but the company also serves as a beckon to empower the next generation of engineers and software developers to embrace technology and innovation.
Mr. Muingnepe vision a future where local entrepreneurs are inspired to tackle challenges with creativity and determination, just as he did.
From a modest idea born out of necessity to a software solution that drives change, Kumulsoftâs story is a testament to the power of innovation and resilience.
The interview highlights Mr. Muingnepe journey through years of hard work and the limitless potential for PNGâs tech industry on the global stage.

Sorcery Accusation-Related Violence â SARV is an issue with devastating consequences, especially for women and children in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
In this yearâs forum hosted by Business Coalition for Women at the Airways Hotel in Port Moresby city on 21st November, the focused was on the alarming rise of Sorcery Accusation-Related Violence (SARV) cases in PNG.
The forum brought together leading experts, advocates, and community members to discuss the root causes of SARV, share survivor stories, and develop actionable solutions.
On the panel was Concordia Lutheran Professional Mission Services (CLPMS) Project Manager Mr. Anthony Lutz, Chair and President for Advising PNG Women Leaders Network (APNGWL) Ruth Kissam, The Voice of Change Program Support Officer & Human Rights Defender Leentje Beâsoer, Melanesian Institute Executive Director Br. Martin, and the Family Support Director Jessie Soi.
The forum participants discussed 11 key actions to tackle SARV (Sorcery Accusation-Related Violence). These actions focus on raising awareness, strengthening legal protections, providing medical and emotional support to survivors, and involving the community to prevent future violence. Let us look at these actions in more detail, explained simply.
The first action is to INCREASE AWARENESS AND ADVOCACY. This means recognizing that SARV is a serious health problem, and teaching people in communities and workplaces about it. Many people have false beliefs about sorcery, so it is important to teach them the truth. When people understand what is really happening, they can change their attitudes and treat others with respect.
The second call to action is STRENGTHEN LEGAL PROTECTIONS. This means making sure the laws are strong enough to protect people from SARV. There should be clear rules to punish those who hurt others because of these false beliefs. It is also important that survivors can easily find help to get justice and support.
The third action is HEALTH EDUCATION. Doctors and other health workers need to teach communities about the real reasons why people get sick or die. Sometimes, people wrongly believe someone is using sorcery to cause harm. By teaching people about health and science, we can stop these myths from spreading.
The fourth call to action SUPPORT FREE MEDICAL CARE FOR SURVIVORS. People who survive SARV often have many injuries and emotional pain, and they should not have to pay for treatment. Providing free medical care helps them recover and feel safe.
PROMOTING SURVIVOR SAFETY is also crucial. Local authorities should create safe places for survivors to stay, away from harm. There should also be ways for people to report SARV cases secretly, so those who need help can ask for it without fear. It is also important to train the people who respond to these reports to be kind and understanding, making survivors feel comfortable and supported.
The sixth action is to RECRUIT AND TRAIN COUNSELORS. Survivors of SARV often need someone to talk to and help them heal emotionally. Counselors trained to deal with these specific needs can give survivors the support they need to feel better and rebuild their lives.
The seventh action is to ENGAGE MEN AS ALLIES. It is important to involve men in stopping SARV. Men can help by learning about how SARV harms women and standing up for respect and kindness. When men help change their communitiesâ views, they can stop violence and promote peace.
SCREENING MEDICAL APPLICANTS is also important. This means checking that people who want to work as doctors or nurses are not influenced by harmful beliefs like those related to SARV. Healthcare workers should treat everyone fairly and not let personal beliefs affect their care.
The ninth action is to EMPOWER WOMEN AS COMMUNITY EDUCATORS AND LEADERS. Women should be trained to teach others about SARV and how to stop it. When women take leadership roles, they can influence their communities in a positive way, spreading the message of respect and helping others understand the problem.
The tenth action is to ENCOURAGE DATA COLLECTION. Collecting information about SARV helps us understand how big the problem is and where it happens the most. When we know the facts, we can make better decisions on how to stop it and help survivors.
Lastly, PARTNER WITH RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS. Working with researchers helps us learn more about SARV and how to prevent it. These experts can study the problem and produce solutions based on factual evidence. By using facts and research, we can make sure the actions we take will be effective in stopping SARV.
Forum participants emphasized the urgent need for collective action to address this pervasive issue. By implementing these recommendations, PNG can work towards creating a safer and more just society for all Papua New Guineans.
