EXXONMOBIL HOSTS 1ST “INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING DAY”
In a groundbreaking initiative to empower young women in Papua New Guinea, ExxonMobil PNG Limited (EMPNG) recently hosted the nation’s first-ever “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.”
The event brought together 75 Grade 9 girls from five secondary schools in Port Moresby to ignite their passion for engineering and showcasing the limitless possibilities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
The day-long program, themed “Think like an Engineer, Be Innovative, Shape the Future,” was an extraordinary opportunity for these young women to interact with Papua New Guinean and international female engineers from ExxonMobil.
With hands-on experiments and inspirational talks, the event delivered a powerful message that women also belong in the engineering field, and they are essential to shaping the world’s future.
The 75 grade 9 girls come from these 5 NCD secondary schools, Koiari Park Adventist Secondary School, Tokarara Secondary School, Badihagwa Secondary School, La Salle Technical Secondary School, and Kila Kila to participate with Exxon Mobil's engineers in the engineering activities.
From building truss bridges to experimenting with circuit boards and Newton’s laws of motion, the girls got a firsthand look at the practical and innovative aspects of engineering.
“We hope this day inspires you to envision a future where you, too, can become engineers, paving the way for the next generation of Papua New Guinean girls,” said Tera Shandro, Chairperson and Managing Director of EMPNG.
The goal of the event was not just to introduce students to engineering but to help them see themselves as future leaders in the field.
For some participants, the event was truly life changing.
Dorcas Winnie, a student from Koiari Park Adventist Secondary School, expressed her excitement about learning how lemon juice can conduct electricity during an electrical engineering experiment.
“At first, I didn’t know lemon juice was a conductor of electricity,” she said. “I learned so much today, and it was so much fun!”
Another student, Jin Hagusi from Badihagwa Secondary School, was moved by the collaborative spirit of engineering.
“Apart from learning about the different branches and how unique they are, I discovered that in the real world, sharing ideas and working as a team are the most important tools for success,” she said.
ExxonMobil PNG has long been committed to investing in STEM education and creating opportunities for women.
The success of this event marks the beginning of a journey to inspire more girls to break stereotypes and pursue engineering careers in PNG.
“We are incredibly proud to launch this program in PNG and look forward to continuing to motivate young women to explore STEM fields,” said Shandro.
As these young girls return to their schools with new confidence and inspiration, this program's ripple effect will shape the future of engineering in PNG.
ExxonMobil’s “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” is more than just a one-day event but a movement to build a brighter, more inclusive future where women lead and innovate.

POLICE CONDUCT AWARENESS AT 4 MILE ABANDONED CASINO
Police in the National Capital District are conducting awareness around Boroko, focusing on areas where criminals, petty offenders, and illegal vendors are known to gather.
One location identified is the abandoned casino and an old, run-down hardware near the Four Mile bus stop.
Police say these areas are being used for illegal activities, including drinking alcohol and hiding stolen goods. Openings in the fence around the property make it easy for criminals and vendors to escape when pursued or to hide after committing offences.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika confirmed that such vacant buildings and drains attract people without permanent residences, who often engage in petty crimes or unauthorized street vending.
Police recently visited the area after receiving information about a phone theft suspect believed to be residing there. However, they found that while the suspect no longer lives there, his parents continue to stay nearby and sell goods in front of the abandoned casino.
Sika highlighted that many petty crimes are committed by individuals living in illegal and makeshift locations, such as vacant buildings and shopfronts.
He thanked police officers and wardens for their efforts to conduct awareness and warned that police will continue pursuing offenders, even if they run into private properties.
During the awareness, police were initially advised not to enter the casino premises since it is private property. Sika said officers explained to the occupants that the fence must be properly secured to prevent criminal access and illegal shortcuts through the area.
He added that he will contact the relevant authorities to identify the property owner and recommend building a proper fence to stop the location from becoming a hub for criminal activities.
Sika emphasized that police would remain vigilant and continue addressing such problem areas across the city.

PNG NRL BID ACADEMY PAVING THE PATH TO 2028 DEBUT
The journey towards PNG’s historic entry into the National Rugby League (NRL) in 2028 officially kicked off with a press conference held by the PNG NRL BID, PNG Rugby League Academy on Monday 16th December, where plans for future developments were revealed.
Following Prime Minister James Marape's announcement last Thursday confirming PNG’s inclusion in the NRL competition, the focus now shifts to grassroots development and player readiness.
The PNG NRL BID Rugby League Academy will play a pivotal role in providing the next generation of rugby league stars who will represent the nation on the global stage in 2028.
Joe Grima, the driving force behind the PNG Rugby League Academy, outlined the academy’s role in developing young talent.
“This is not just about creating a team for 2028, but it is about building a legacy for PNG rugby league. The academy is where it all begins,” said Grima.
Currently operating in six regions Central, NCD, Rabaul, Kokopo, Lae, Goroka, and Mount Hagen, the academy engages over 700 young men and women. The program is structured to groom players across four age groups, laying a solid foundation for progression to elite-level competitions.
“We’ve designed our programs to meet international standards, ensuring our players are not only skilled but also disciplined and well-rounded individuals,” Grima added.
The academy’s integration into PNG’s existing rugby league ecosystem ensures a structured pathway for player development. With plans to align academy programs with the Digicel Cup, young players will have a clear route from local competitions to the professional stage.
“Our aim is to ensure the best and brightest talents in PNG are ready to compete at the highest level,” Grima emphasized.
“This isn’t just a pipe dream; we are methodically building towards a reality where PNG players stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the NRL.”
A key challenge identified during the press conference was the inclusion of players outside the school system. Grima reassured the media that steps are being taken to ensure inclusivity.
“We are working closely with PNGRFL to establish youth competitions aligned with the Digicel Cup. This will provide opportunities for every aspiring player, not just those in schools,” he explained.
Grima also highlighted the academy’s plans to lower the entry age for players.
“Starting younger is essential. In other rugby league nations, players are introduced to structured programs at much earlier ages. We must bridge this gap to remain competitive,” he said.
The academy is not solely focused on creating elite athletes. Education and personal development are central to its mission.
“Our ‘no school, no train’ policy ensures that education remains a priority,” said Grima.
“We’re not just building a team but also shaping leaders who can inspire communities.”
As PNG prepares to make its mark in the NRL, the academy’s holistic approach to development is set to ensure that the 2028 debut team not only represents the country but also embodies the values of dedication, discipline, and community spirit.
The press conference served as a rallying call to the nation, highlighting the immense potential of PNG’s young talent and the transformative impact of the NRL Bid Academy. As the countdown to 2028 begins, the groundwork laid today will define the success of PNG’s historic entry into the NRL.
“We are building something extraordinary here,” Grima concluded.
“When PNG takes the field in 2028, it will be the commitment of years of hard work, dedication, and belief in the power of rugby league to unite a nation.”

LA SALLE- FROM A YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER TO TOPPING GRADE 10 NATIONAL EXAMS
La Salle Technical Secondary School, formerly known as Hohola Youth Development Center, has undergone an incredible journey of growth and success.
Established in 1973 by the Australian Brigidine Catholic Sisters, the school was initially created to give a second chance to students who could not make it through the normal education system.
In 1993, the De La Salle Brothers took over the administration and began making changes. By 2000, the school introduced a mix of basic studies, practical subjects, and work experience to provide more hands-on learning giving a vocational feel.
Between 2012 and 2014, AusAID helped develop new learning facilities, which allowed the Hohola Youth Development Center to transition into La Salle Technical College. This change enabled the school to issue national certificates and supported 270 students to take the FODE National Examination.
In 2022, Brother Anthony, a former principal, returned to lead the school after leaving in 2017 for De La Salle Secondary at Bomama. His return coincided with the PNG Department of Education officially recognizing La Salle College as La Salle Technical Secondary School.
"I returned from De La Salle Secondary School because when the changes were happening, most teachers were underpaid, and students were struggling with the new system," Brother Anthony said.
Determined to overcome these challenges, Brother Anthony and his team worked closely with students, teachers, and families to create a positive and supportive environment.
In 2023, La Salle Technical Secondary School admitted its first group of selected Grade 9 students. Brother Anthony described this as both a milestone and a challenge for the school, which had primarily served students who had dropped out before.
With this new group of Grade 9 students, the teachers and students focused on a shared goal: to secure a spot in the Top 10 of the Grade 10 National Examinations. Through hard work and commitment, the school not only achieved this goal but also surpassed expectations by ranking No. 1 in the country.
"It’s exciting for me and the whole school community," Brother Anthony said.
"We worked very hard with the students. We knew they would perform well because of all the preparation we did last year and earlier this year. We thought we would make the top three. But when I heard we were number one, I was not surprised. Everyone, the teachers, students, and parents, was so happy. We expected it, and we made it happen."
This achievement shows the power of teamwork, faith, and determination. La Salle Technical Secondary School’s journey from a youth development center to leading the Grade 10 National Examinations is proof that great things can happen when a community works together with a shared purpose.
The dedication of the teachers, the hard work of the students, and the strong support from families demonstrate how challenges can be turned into successes. Together, they have shown that by believing in each other and staying committed, it is possible to achieve even the biggest goals.
