MENSTRUL HEALTH CAMPAIGN REACHES FEMALE STDENTS IN MILNE BAY
A week-long Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) awareness campaign was held across 5 schools in Milne Bay province with a total of 645 girls attending in June 2025.
The awareness campaign was by CPL Foundation Inc., in partnership with Queenpads and the Sir Brian Bell Foundation.
The awareness campaign was led by Queenpads Founder & CEO Anne-Shirley Korave and volunteer Shivonnie Sakme, who facilitated sessions at:
- Naura Primary School
- Hagita Secondary School
- Huhuna Primary School
- Kebegiuli Primary School
- Ramhaga Adventist Primary School
Each school hosted interactive awareness sessions, providing vital information around menstrual hygiene, cycle education, and destigmatization of menstruation. The sessions also encouraged proper hygiene practices and promoted sustainable, environmentally friendly menstrual products.
This campaign was timed to align with World Environment Day, reinforcing the connection between menstrual health and waste reduction through reusable sanitary solutions.
Thanks to the Sir Brian Bell Foundation, each participant received a reusable QueenPad with a total of 638 QueenPads distributed during the program.
CPL Foundation covered all logistics for the trip, including return airfares, cargo, accommodation, meals, transport, and boat transfers, totaling over K10,000 in sponsorship.
This partnership exemplifies CPLâs commitment to championing health and education initiatives, particularly those that empower young girls and women across Papua New Guinea.
Feedback from the schools was overwhelmingly positive as this highlights the need for more support and open dialogue on reproductive health education in schools.
As menstrual health remains a sensitive yet crucial topic in PNG, CPL Foundation remains committed to supporting programs that equip girls with knowledge, confidence, and access to safe hygiene products.
"We thank all our partners, especially the on-ground volunteers and school administration teams, for making this outreach possible."

Police have launched an investigation into a deadly ethnic clash that resulted in the tragic death of a father and son at 8 Mile Back Road in the early hours of Saturday morning in Port Moresby city.
Authorities have confirmed that the case is not linked to Fridayâs violent clash at Erima.
NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab stated that the incident appears to be a domestic retaliation, possibly involving an alcohol-related dispute, and is being treated independently from other recent tensions in the city.
âWe want to make it clear that this incident is not related to the Erima fight or any ethnic conflict. It is a separate matter under active investigation,â Superintendent Simatab said.
The two deceased, believed to be a father and his son, were found dead at the scene of their burnt home. Their bodies have been recovered and taken to the Port Moresby General Hospital morgue.
âThe full NCD Command is involved. Our officers are conducting interviews and gathering evidence to understand what happened,â Simatab said.
Police have also increased visibility in the area to prevent further unrest.
Speculation on social media had suggested a connection between the 8 Mile incident and ongoing disputes between individuals from Eastern Highlands and the Southern Highlands. However, Superintendent Simatab has dispelled these claims and cautioned the public against spreading false information.
âWe urge the public not to jump to conclusions or spread unverified reports. We are treating this matter with urgency, and weâll share more confirmed findings by tomorrow,â he added.

MUDSLIDE DAMAGES BUK BILONG PIKININI TATANA| CPL FOUNDATION AIDS
CPL Foundation Inc. has extended much-needed support to the Buk bilong Pikinini Tatana Library Learning Center (LLC) following a mudslide that caused significant damage to the schoolâs surrounding stone wall in late May.
The Tatana LLC, a community-based early learning center supported by Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP), is situated on land formerly used as the Tatana United Church pastorâs residence. In 2014, following the relocation of the pastorâs home, the land was made available for the construction of the school. The stone wall, originally built by the church to secure the property, had stood for 27 years before sustaining extensive damage during the recent mudslide.
The slide compromised the safety and structural integrity of the school grounds.
In response, CPL Foundation acted promptly working with the CPL Groupâs Repairs & Maintenance (R&M) team to assess the damage and engage a local contractor to carry out urgent repair work and reinforce the wall.
CPL Foundation Inc. has been a committed partner of Buk bilong Pikinini, supporting Tatana LLC for over a decade.
As a Diamond Sponsor, CPL Foundation provides funding for the schoolâs operational costs, including educator salaries, special events, educational resources, and utilities.
The total cost of the restoration and reinforcement project was K44,000, fully funded by CPL Foundation Inc.
âOur priority was to ensure the safety of the students and the continued operation of the school. Weâre proud to have been able to respond swiftly and support the BbP Tatana LLC students and teachers through this recovery,â said Ms. Deborah Alois, Manager of CPL Foundation Inc.
Mr. Maru Koraihi, Chairman of the Tatana United Church, expressed his gratitude:
âOn behalf of the church, the school, and the entire Tatana community, we sincerely thank the CPL Foundation for their swift response and continued support. The restoration of the wall ensures our children continue learning in a safe environment.â
Ms. Leanne Resson, Executive Officer of Buk bilong Pikinini, also extended her thanks:
âWe are extremely grateful to CPL Foundation for stepping in during this time of need. I would also like to acknowledge Sir Mahesh Patel, the Foundationâs Chairman, for consistently supporting BbP Tatana LLC beyond the terms of our sponsorship agreement. His generosity and willingness to do more means so much to the children and the community.â

To maintain the integrity and fairness of the examination, the Department of Education has implemented strict security protocols for the handling and distribution of the exam papers.
âThe exam must reflect each studentâs individual effort,â Dr. Kombra said. âWe urge all students to do their best and demonstrate what they have learned.
Teachers and schools also have a responsibility to uphold the integrity of the examination process.â

Dr. Kombra also issued a firm warning against malpractice during the exam period.
âAny form of cheating will carry serious consequences, including non-certification for students, termination of teachers involved, and suspension of schools for a minimum of three years,â he said.

THE BATTLE OF WITS ON NATIONAL ISSUES | POMNATS WIN DEBATE
The 2025 Inter-Schools Debate Grand Final between Kopkop College and Port Moresby National School of Excellence (POMNATS), held at APEC Haus during the final day of the PNG Resources Golden Exhibition, showcased the intellectual strength of Papua New Guineaâs youth as they explored one of the country's most pressing policy questions: âShould Papua New Guinea adopt the Resource Nationalism approach to maximize its economic and social benefits?â
At the end of a well-contested and engaging debate, POMNATS emerged as the winning team, impressing the judges with their clarity of argument, strong delivery, and deep connection to the nationâs current economic realities.
Both schools demonstrated critical thinking, confidence, and strong public speaking skills as they unpacked the complexities of resource governance in Papua New Guinea.
Kopkop College, representing the affirmative side, began with a compelling introduction grounded in national history and economic sovereignty.
Their first speaker presented arguments that included historical events such as the Bougainville crisis and referenced international models like Norwayâs Petroleum Fund, advocating for increased state control over PNGâs natural resources.
However, the team experienced a loss of momentum during the second speech.
Second speaker appeared confident but at times disconnected from the audience.
While incorporating locally relevant examples, the structure and transitions in his argument lacked fluency and impact.
Time constraints also hindered delivery.
Their third speaker, Dreonera Tebegetu, regained composure for the team, delivering with authority and passion.
Her examples were sharp and mostly delivered without notes.
However, toward the latter part of her speech, cohesion with the central argument began to weaken, affecting the overall persuasiveness of her conclusion.
In contrast, POMNATS, who opposed the motion, maintained consistency throughout the period.
Their second speaker, Dago Morea, stood out for his calm and measured approach.
He opened with a thought-provoking quote that immediately resonated with the audience and followed up with concrete, real-world examples.
His delivery was articulate and engaging, using language that connected naturally with the audience.
POMNATS presented a structured argument against resource nationalism, highlighting potential economic instability, the importance of foreign investment, and the dangers of centralized resource control in a context of ongoing governance challenges.
Their rebuttals were measured and evidence based.
The judges commended both teams for their research, composure, and ability to critically examine such a nationally significant issue.
Ultimately, Port Moresby National School of Excellence was awarded the award, praised for their coherence, depth of analysis, and practical perspective on the issue.
As applause filled the room and awards were presented, the event served as a timely reminder that Papua New Guineaâs emerging generation is ready to lead critical conversations that shape the nationâs future.

Ng spoke passionately about the evolution of breakdancing in Papua New Guinea, recalling the crewâs early performances and the transformative experience of competing internationally.
âOur first international competition opened our eyes to a much bigger world, and we brought that energy home. That inspiration led to the creation of the National Dance Championships, which have now become a powerful platform for workshops, standards, and community engagement."
These national championships have provided emerging dancers with structured training opportunities and national recognition, helping to shape a new generation of talent across PNG.
âWeâre not just dancing, weâre building something for the next generation,â Ng added.
âItâs about creating pathways so that other young people in PNG can take this further than we ever imagined.â
In addition to thanking local supporters, Ng acknowledged the global dance community for their encouragement over the past seven years, saying it played a key role in Wan Squadâs growth and confidence on the international stage.
The teamâs departure was also recognized by Pacific Industries Ltd, which has partnered with Wan Squad for the fourth consecutive year.
Sharani Chue, Director of Marketing at Pacific Industries, praised the dancers' discipline and energy.
âWan Squadâs journey is one of discipline, passion, and unstoppable drive â exactly what MTN Dew stands for. We are proud to stand behind them as they represent not only themselves, but every young dreamer in Papua New Guinea who dares to chase excellence.â
Pyan Ng closed his speech with words that captured the spirit of their journey.
âThis continued support from MTN Dew and Pacific Industries means everything to us. It not only makes this journey possible but shows us that our country believes in us. Weâre proud to carry the flag and determined to give it our all on the world stage.â
Wan Squad will compete against the worldâs best crews in Phoenix, but they go with more than just skill they carry the dreams of a nation ready to dance its way into global history once again.
