GOOD TURNOUT AT PNGDF STATIC AIR DISPLAY
The Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) Air Transport Wing (ATW) in Port Moresby city, drew massive crowds today during its highly anticipated Static Aircraft Display as part of the Defence Week celebrating the country's 50th Independence Anniversary.
Most of the attendees were youths from the nearby ATS Blocks, along with families of PNGDF personnel from ATS Military Barracks, Murray Barracks, Taurama, and Goldie Barracks.
The event kicked off at 9 a.m. and continued until 3 p.m., showcasing aircraft from the Papua New Guinea Air Force alongside visiting aircraft and pilots from the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
The display gave the public an up-close look at military aircraft, as well as an opportunity to interact with pilots and crew, sparking enthusiasm and curiosity, especially among younger attendees.
Among the crowd who spoke to PNG HAUSBUNG was Sterick Hayara, who resides at Skyview, along with Ezikiel Togango and Andrew from ATS last block.
They were full of energy, taking advantage of the school holidays to spend their first weekend break at the event. Sterick shared his excitement:
“I’ve always been curious about military planes because they are unique when they fly in the sky, unlike our Air Niugini passenger planes. So today was a chance I had to take to have a close look.”
Andrew added by noting it as an event that is part of the 50th Anniversary
“Nothing much to say, but the reason I had to attend is because this is part of our country’s 50th Independence celebrations.”
The event brought together families for quality time and gave youths the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity about Defense Force aircraft.
The group was also fortunate to meet the DC flight attendant of the RAAF C-130J, who gladly shared his experience with Andrew and Sterick
“Being a part of the RAAF has always been a dream since I was a kid. Now I’ve been with the Air Force for six years, and it’s pretty cool because I get to live my dream and serve my country.”
The Static Aircraft Display is the second-to-last event of the PNGDF Week-long celebration, which will conclude tomorrow.

AIR SHOW GLIMPSES PNGDF AIR FORCE FUTURE
The skies above Ela Beach came alive this morning in a spectacular air show celebrating Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary, showcasing the nation’s growing military capabilities and international partnerships.
The event featured aerial displays by the PNGDF Air Transport Wing, Air Niugini, and partner air forces from Australia, New Zealand, France, India, and Tonga.
Thousands of spectators, along with international partners, joined in the celebrations, which highlighted modern air power and shared Pacific pride.
Emphasizing the collective efforts of partnerships, particularly with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) since 2020, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt. Col) Nancy Wii, Director of Air Preparations for the PNGDF, reflected on the milestone moment.
“We have revived our air capabilities in partnership with the Royal Australian Air Force since 2020, and today we showcase what our team has achieved. The air show today is a collective effort by our partners who are here to celebrate our 50th anniversary,” Colonel Wii said.
Lt. Col. Wii, who has served in the PNGDF for 20 years, highlighted the growth of the air wing, noting the introduction of three PAC 750 aircraft and the Flight Specialist Program, which has trained pilots, loadmasters, and movement personnel.
“These aircraft form the foundation for the future Air Force of PNG,” she added.
A strong focus of Lt. Col. Wii’s address was the participation of women in the Defense Force.
“So far, there are about 200 females across our three services, with 15 serving in areas of aircraft engineering, movement, personnel, and support. I am currently the only female pilot, and we would like to see more women join the ranks.”
She urged young girls to pursue careers in aviation and defense, drawing inspiration from her own journey by growing up in a village in Jiwaka Province, earning her pilot’s license in New Zealand, and rising to leadership within the PNGDF.
The event also marked the first public demonstration of PNGDF’s parachute dropping capability, with aircraft specially equipped for in-flight open-door operations.
Colonel Wii noted that the Air Wing is also building capacity for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
Looking ahead, she revealed plans to recruit more female pilots, encouraging young women to see the PNGDF as an equal-opportunity employer.
“Nothing is impossible for women. I hope to have 10 more females in aviation before I retire,” she said.
Supported by international partners, the Ela Beach Air Show combined thrilling aerial displays with a powerful message that Papua New Guinea’s Defense Force is modern, capable, and open to all regardless of gender.

Prime Minister Marape welcomed the UN chief on behalf of PNG’s 10 million citizens, acknowledging his visit to Mount Hagen city where he met local leaders and beneficiaries of UN programs in health, education, and mental health.
“You have certainly inspired us to lift our behavior as far as leaving no child behind and no place behind,” Mr. Marape said.

Mr. Guterres expressed gratitude for what he described as the “warm and generous hospitality” he had received.
He highlighted PNG’s political record as a model in a challenging global context.
“Papua New Guinea is a country with 50 years of uninterrupted democracy. In a world where democratic values are under threat, we should all be grateful for this remarkable example,” he said.
On climate change, the Secretary-General underlined PNG’s importance as a “negative emissions” country due to its vast rainforests and oceans, which absorb more carbon than the nation produces.
“The international community benefits from Papua New Guinea’s forests and oceans, and must give back,” he said.
While calling for climate justice and urging reforms in the global financial system to better support developing nations.
Mr. Guterres also called for greater international backing for PNG’s development priorities in education, health and infrastructure, stressing the importance of “a modern society that leaves no one behind.”

SAFE CITY OPERATIONS STEP UP AHEAD OF PNG’S 50TH JUBILEE
With Papua New Guinea preparing to mark its 50th Independence Anniversary, NCD Police Command is intensifying its Safe City operations to keep residents and visitors safe throughout the celebrations.
Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab said the operations, which began last month, will continue through the Jubilee period, Christmas, and New Year.
Police are working to end ethnic violence by stopping community fights and disputes that threaten peace.
They are also prioritizing the protection of women and children, taking strong action against all forms of violence directed at vulnerable groups.
On the city’s roads, police are stepping up traffic enforcement by cracking down on reckless drivers and removing unsafe vehicles.
To address anti-social behaviour, officers are targeting illegal activities and disruptive conduct in public spaces that put residents at risk.
Finally, police are ensuring that criminals face justice by putting more resources into tracking down offenders, making arrests, and holding them accountable.
To strengthen operations, additional units including Mobile Squads, Dog Units, Water Police, Police Bands, Headquarters staff, and Police Reservists have joined NCD officers on the ground.
Police have also partnered with the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) to clean up the city, remove illegal structures, control stray animals, and enforce liquor laws in order to reduce alcohol-related incidents.
In recent weeks, police have tightened security for major events, including visits from Prime Ministers, the PNG Defence Force Week Military Tattoo, the 2nd Economic Zone Summit, and the arrival of the United Nations Secretary-General.
More high-profile events are expected in the lead-up to Independence Day.
Superintendent Simatab urged residents to assist police in keeping the city safe.
“Your support is very important. If you see something suspicious, report it to the nearest police officer or station right away. Please be alert, respect our officers, and celebrate responsibly.”
He added that by working together, Port Moresby can host safe and joyful 50th Jubilee celebrations.

ALLAN BIRD TAKES THE HELM OF PEOPLE’S REFORM PARTY
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird has not only just joined the People’s Reform Party (PRP) but has also been appointed as its new Party Leader, in what observers say could be a significant reshaping of Papua New Guinea’s political landscape.
The announcement was made Today Sunday 31st August 2025 at Dream Inn in Port Moresby city, where PRP founder and North Fly MP James Donald said the party’s executive unanimously endorsed Bird to take over leadership.
“If Allan Bird is going to join the party, we also agree that he takes the leadership,” Donald declared, describing the decision as a sacrifice for the greater good of the country.
Bird, who had been an independent MP for more than two years, said he had considered retiring from politics altogether. But the calls from his East Sepik constituents and the wider public convinced him to continue, including fellow Politician, Bryan Kramer.
Governor Bird revealed that five political parties had approached him to join their ranks, but he set strict conditions before making a move.
He said he wanted a party that must stand for reforms and was ready for action. The party must not be based in his Momase region, and the party must be led by ambitious, principled young leaders, and lastly the party must not carry “bad political baggage” from the past.
“People’s Reform Party ticked all the boxes,” Bird said. “They have no history of bad decisions that I would have to defend. They are a clean slate.”
Founded in August 2018, PRP is one of the country’s youngest parties. It first entered parliament in 2022 with the election of James Donald, who has led the party since its inception.
The party’s emblem and colors are red, black, and white that symbolize courage in reform, strength in decision-making, and honesty in governance.
By handing over leadership to Governor Bird, Donald said PRP was demonstrating humility and unity.
“It is about dropping egos and seeing the bigger picture,” he told the crowd.
In his maiden speech as PRP leader, Bird repeated his long-standing call for a “hard reset” of Papua New Guinea’s governance.
He likened the country to a “sick patient in hospital” needing bitter medicine rather than “sweet promises.”
“We are going to be honest with Papua New Guineans. Corruption is out of control, crime is out of control, young people have no opportunities. We need hard reforms, not easy talk,” Bird said.
He announced that PRP would use digital platforms to allow members and citizens to participate directly in policy debates, party governance, and even decisions on how MPs should vote in parliament.
“This party is going to give control back to the people,” he said. “If we want transparency in government, it must start in our own party.”
The appointment of Bird, a two-term governor with national recognition, gives PRP its highest-profile leader to date. Analysts say it could position the party as a reformist alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.
For now, Bird says he is focused on building a team of like-minded leaders committed to “taking the hard road” for genuine change.
“Change comes at a price. It will not be easy. But if you believe this country deserves better, then this is the journey we must take together,” he told supporters.
