RAEPA MUSIC INSPIRING KIDS TO MAKE GREAT MUSIC
Benjamin Raepa founder of Benji PNG Freelancer, is dedicated to empowering musicians in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Recently, he has started music classes for children beginning this month (February) and March, focusing on instruments such as bass, drums, keyboard, guitar, and vocals.
These classes aim to nurture the talents of aspiring musicians and equip them for success in the ever-evolving music industry.
Recent updates on his Facebook page ‘Raepa Music’ have demonstrated good progress.
“As musicians, the materials we are exposed to influence how we perform.”
“Listening to outstanding music, when combined with constant practice, is essential for staying inspired and improving your art.”“We don't practice for ordinary in our music sessions; instead, we aspire for brilliance. I want these children to develop into excellent musicians who create and perform with brilliance.”
“Let's continue to inspire the future generation to make excellent music!”
Additionally, Benjamin is preparing to launch "Behind the Mix," a new TikTok live series that will serve as a platform for PNG artists to share their stories, connect with fans, and provide valuable insights to emerging musicians.
He encourages artists to embrace technology by learning to use Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and investing in essential production gear.
This strategy allows musicians from even the most remote areas of PNG to participate in music projects and collaborate on an international scale.
His vision is clear: to create a thriving ecosystem where PNG creatives can succeed on the global stage while building sustainable careers locally.

SIR CHRIS HAIVETA MOURNS FOR LATE SIR JULIUS CHAN
Sir Julius Chan’s passing has greatly impacted the nation, Gulf Governor and former Deputy Prime Minister to Chan-Haiveta government, Sir Chris Haiveta has expressed his sorrow at the late founding father’s passing.
He said the nation has lost one of the last three surviving founding father, just eight months shy of PNG’s 50th anniversary.
“On behalf of the people of the Gulf Province, my provincial assembly, my tribe and the Toaripi tribe where Sir Julius was a co-operative officer at Kukup in his early years, I take this time to express my utmost sympathy on the passing of a great iconic leader of Papua New Guinea.”
“I offer my sincere condolences to Lady Chan, the children and their families. May you find solace and comfort in God at this time of mourning and know that your father has run a mighty race, and it is the journey that has been meaningful to each of us in many ways, for which we are eternally grateful.”
“As I mourn the passing of Sir Julius, a very close colleague and mentor, I also reflect on his journey from pre-independence to independence then to the present day.”
“He was the father and economic architect of the modern post-colonial state of PNG. He established most of the institutions that run and regulate the economic and commercial infrastructure of Papua New Guinea.”
His background, training, and experience as a Marist boarding college student and Co-operative officer served him well throughout his life.
Frugal and astute, he could uncannily cut through economic jargon and administrative "gobble degook" to find savings or a simpler and more practical method of doing things.
Sir Haiveta stated that Sir Julius Chan was a great strategist of the highest level in politics, using his stable deck of 4 to 6 MPs and his stature to emerge twice as Deputy Prime Minister under Wingti and twice as Prime Minister, unseating Somare and Wingti in his prime.
Punctuality, comportment, and excellent manners were crucial in the state's day-to-day business, whether at formal or casual meetings or Ministerial NEC sessions.
As a bureaucrat he was a hard taskmaster but a pleasure to work with,10am meant 10am with 100 % attendance not 10 past 10am with 99% attendance.
“Late Sir Julius and I go a long way back when he was the prime minister, and I was Secretary Gulf in the 80s and later as Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the mid 90s.”
“Together, we faced challenges, recorded successes and set up institutions that have added value, all for the good of our people and this nation.”
He stated occasionally he and Chan found themselves on opposing sides but their tight bond in personal relationships remained until the end with constant open communication.
“He was a man of his word. A true friend.”
“Farewell Sir J, rest easy now as you have played your game well for us all. For today we remember you. Your legacy lives on. May you rest in peace.”

STRONG WINDS & POTENTIAL HEAVY RAINS IN THE FORECAST
The National Weather Service (NWS) is keeping an eye on a natural weather phenomenon called a tropical depression that could form near Queensland, Australia.
As a result, the Highlands Region will have severe rainfall over the next 24-48 hours, while Momase will see further rainfall throughout
the weekend.
Furthermore, strong or gusty winds will blow along the Papuan coastline from Western to Milne Bay Provinces.
A tropical depression is a low-pressure system that develops into a tropical cyclone. During this time, rainfall is expected to increase,
as will strong or gusty winds.
The coastal waters of Western to Morobe Provinces, including the Coral Sea, are expected to be affected by strong winds, resulting in rough seas.
Seamen and small vessel operators in these provinces must heed this caution before venturing out to sea.
The National Disaster Centre (NDC), the office in charge of disasters and emergencies, is providing an early warning to the affected
provinces, as well as neighboring provinces, to take precautionary measures during this period.
The NDC will continue to work with NWS to offer additional information on this natural event until it subsides.

PIKU APPOINTED AS HEAD OF SHOTOKAN KARATE BUDOKAI IN PNG
The Shotokan Karate Budokai (SKB) has announced the appointment of Julius Piku Sensei as the new Head of Style for its PNG Branch as endorsed by Trevor Roberts Sensei, founder of the SKB style and the current Chief Instructor of the style at its Honbu dojo (headquarters) in Brisbane, Australia.
A significant achievement in the line of committed practitioners of SKB and Shotokan Karate as a whole, this appointment is particularly fitting, given the long-standing relationship between Julius Sensei and his predecessor, Carl Mari ‘Bera Sensei.
Mari 'Bera has mentored Piku since he was a teenager, and he has thrived under his direction.
Piku, known for his technical prowess and tactical expertise in the ring, is not only a karate champion in PNG, but also the most capped PNG Karate elite athlete, having represented his country on a number of international occasions.
Mari ‘Bera’s mentorship extended beyond the dojo, as Piku took on roles such as Karate National Coach under endorsement by the PNG Olympic Committee.
Piku's leadership abilities were polished in administrative responsibilities at a local club, Rock Dojo, and the PNG Karate-Do Federation Inc., where he served as Secretary.
East Gate Karate Academy was established later on by Piku with his Sensei’s blessing, acquiring the title of Sensei, furthering the legacy of excellence and dedication.
Reflecting on his journey, Piku shared a poignant lesson from Carl Mari ‘Bera Sensei.
“Up on the mountain, the view is great - you can see far and wide, but that’s where the wind blows its hardest. It's a very lonely place.”
This metaphor, a profound leadership concept, has had a deep impact on Piku, leading him through numerous problems and reminding him to remain watchful and aware of his surroundings and associations.
Piku expressed his gratitude to Trevor Roberts Sensei and the management team for their acknowledgment and trust.
“I am deeply honored by this appointment and look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence that Shotokan Karate Budokai is known for.”
He also extended his thanks to Carl Mari ‘Bera Sensei for his unwavering support and outstanding service.
“Mr. Mari ‘Bera’s contributions have been invaluable. His dedication and passion have set a high standard for all of us, and we are deeply grateful for his service.”
Moreover, Piku expressed his appreciation to the organization members and sponsors.
“Our journey would not have been possible without the backing of our dedicated members and generous sponsors. Your support has been the backbone of our success.”
“Additionally, we extend a warm invitation to other Shotokan Karate dojos, martial arts clubs and individuals who wish to join us.”
Membership to Shotokan Karate Budokai is now open. For more information, email eastgatekarate@ekere.net or call (675) 8238 6723.

REALITY OF A TOPPER: A SHORT FILM REVIEW BY PNGHAUSBUNG
Title: Reality of a Topper (2024)
Director: Priyal Jain
Genre(s): Short
Duration: 6mins 28sec
Cast: Tanya Sharma • Kavita Wadhwan • Aditya Pardeshi
Student topper Tanya (Tanya Sharma) navigates the pressures of maintaining her academic reputation and grades while learning the importance of having fun.
Reality of a Topper explores the lifestyle of a student with high family expectations in the academic world.
It covers themes of family, school, friendships and life.
Reality of a Topper communicates a powerful message of maintaining a healthy balance between studies and having a social life outside of academics as both are equally important.
In the film, Tanya often disregards her family and friends' attempts to involve her in social engagements in order to prioritize her studies.
While it is crucial to focus on school, in doing so, she misses out on building healthy relationships and developing aspects of her identity that are not related to her studies.
The film being an Indian production incorporates Hindi language into the dialogue which is admirable as it adds a touch of cultural authenticity to a contemporary film.
Although the film gives a good message, I think the film should have also depicted the main character learning the importance of failure and how to handle setbacks.
This film teaches a good lesson to kids to be studious but also keep in mind that they are more than just their marks.
I’d give it a solid 9/10.

U.S. AMBASSADOR PRESENTS RARE PHOTOS TO GOVERNOR GENERAL
U.S. Ambassador Ann Marie Yastishock presented rare WWII photos to the Governor General Sir Bob Dadae today Tuesday 28th January 2025.
The photographs were taken in 1942, while US General Douglas MacArthur resided in the Government House commanding the Southwest Pacific Theatre.
The presentation of these images highlighted the duration of Papua New Guinea's collaboration with the United States.
This was the first event to kick off the U.S. Embassy's celebration of 50 Years of Papua New Guinean Independence and 50 Years of diplomatic relations between our countries.
U.S Ambassador Yastishock, stated that shared values between the United States and Papua New Guinea are not just ingrained within the governments but also within the people.
"These images are not just relics of the past; they are powerful symbols of our shared commitment to freedom, resilience, and the pursuit of peaceful democracy," said Ambassador Yastishock.
Two of the four photographs given illustrate the Government House in 1942, one from the outside and one showing the furniture inside the mansion when MacArthur lived there.
The following two images show General MacArthur with the Papuan Constabulary Guard on Christmas Day in 1942.
The General Macarthur Memorial Foundation in Norfolk, Virginia has gifted these rare images.
They are unique and have never been displayed before in the world.
"I consider bringing these photos to you as bringing them to their rightful home," said Ambassador Yastishock to the Governor General at his residence where the photographs were originally taken.
As the country plans for its golden jubilee, the United States and Papua New Guinea concentrate on the shared history and continued relationship.
"The presentation of these historic photographs demonstrates how our people have worked together for years to preserve the democratic values and the freedom we regard highly," she concluded.

REMOTE SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE GREATER FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Education Minister Lucas Dekena recently announced that remote schools in the country will receive greater support financially as part of the Marape/Rosso Government’s 2025 Free Education Policy.
This geographically influenced reform uses the PNG Access Remote Index (PARI) to distribute funds, enabling remote schools to obtain necessary resources in order to provide quality education to students. Dekena said this is due to the 2012 tuition fee grants that were distributed evenly without taking into consideration the accessibility of schools in different locations.
“This policy will adjust to reflect the locality of schools in 2025," he said.
Based on a study conducted by the 2024 Department of Education, schools were categorized into six groups of accessibility: Highly Accessible, Accessible, Moderately Accessible, Remote, Very Remote and Extremely Remote.
With this information, schools in hard-to-reach locations will receive more financial support compared to urban schools in the Nation’s Capital.
He said 80% of funds allocated will be strictly for operational grants, while 20% will cater for essential science and mathematics resources.
Furthermore, project fees will proceed to be supported beneath the K160 million Family Assistance Package, with grants straightforwardly distributed into school accounts.
Schools must also have the approval of the Provincial or National Education Board prior to collecting any additional parental contributions for projects.
The Minister strongly advised school leaders to be responsible while managing government funds and encouraged collaboration with local authorities to address specific needs, such as boarding costs in both the high and secondary schools.
