TENSE CLASHES HALT CENTRAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC
Police in Central Province have confirmed the murder of a Goilala man last night at Vanapa along the Hiritano Highway, sparking tense retaliation attacks and significant disruptions to travellers.
Central Police units responded to the scene but struggled to control a group of enraged tribesmen from Goilala, whose frustration turned to the unfortunate commuters along the route.
Opportunists reportedly joined in, escalating attacks on passing vehicles and creating a hazardous environment.
Doa Police were advised to halt inbound traffic from Brown River and beyond, effectively blocking access to Port Moresby for public safety.
Central Police units returned at dawn to clear the area and ensure safe passage along the highway, although tensions remain high.
The incident is believed to be tied to an ongoing feud originating a week ago, in which three people were killed.
Yesterdayâs killing appears to have triggered another wave of retribution, with the deceasedâs family members and others targeting the traveling public along the highwayâs volatile stretch.
Police have stationed officers to maintain order and monitor the area, but caution all travellers to remain vigilant when using the Hiritano Highway as tensions are expected to continue.

ENB POLICE LAUNCH FESTIVE SPEED OPERATIONS
Police in East New Britain (ENB) launched their 2024 festive operations, code-named "Ops High Speed," at Kokopo Market on Monday, November 11th, signaling the start of a focused campaign to ensure community safety throughout the holiday season, which ends next January.
The operation is grounded in the "SPEED" strategy, standing for Securing a safer community in Partnership through Effective, Efficient, and Deterrent approaches, reflecting the policeâs mission to protect ENB communities effectively.
Police personnel marched from Ralum Police Headquarters to the market, raising awareness about the upcoming security measures and reinforcing a strong police presence across the province.
ENB Provincial Administrator Levi Mano who addressed the police, and the public assured them of continued provincial government support, emphasizing that maintaining law and order is essential for a peaceful community.
âThe government is assisting the police force so that you are conducting your duties effectively."
"Thatâs why the provincial administration and the provincial law and order committee is supporting the police initiatives to ensure our province is safe again for everyone,â Mano stated.
The three-month operation, which will conclude on January 3, 2025, will involve roadblocks, foot patrols, and investigations led by the Criminal Investigative Division (CID) to address outstanding cases.
Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector Felix Nebanat thanked local stakeholders for their contributions and reassured the public that police officers would be working tirelessly to maintain order.
He said community cooperation with police is important and urged residents to report any suspicious activities or criminal incidents to aid police efforts.
âBecause if we [community members] do not do that, then our community will continue to suffer, in terms of experiencing criminal activities,â Nebanat explained.
Addressing public concerns about safety in reporting crime, Chief Inspector Nebanat acknowledged the fears people may have about providing information.
He advised community members to share information discreetly, suggesting the use of mobile phones for anonymous tips.
âI know thereâs this saying that, âwe want to give information, but we are afraid. And so, what is the guarantee by police for our safety,â he said, adding that careful reporting can ensure safety while supporting the police.
ENB Governor Michael Marum was also there and encouraged families to take personal responsibility during this period, urging parents to keep their children close to home.
âWe need everyone to work together - so if you have information, please provide to police," Governor Marum appealed.
The police hotline (112) remains available for urgent reports, although Nebanat expressed a need for better radio networks to enhance communication during emergencies.
The community can expect a comprehensive approach from police in securing a safe and festive season, with the publicâs assistance seen as vital to achieving a crime-free environment for all.
"We look forward for these next three months of this police operation,â Governor Marum said.

CALLS TO FREE UP LAND AT NUKUMAL PLANTATION
At the recent gun surrender ceremony in Warangoi in the Sinivit District of East New Britain's Pomio District led by Pomio MP and Health Minister Elias Kapavore, several community members voiced concerns about land availability, especially regarding Nukumal Plantation, which has seen a need for clearer land ownership and titles for residents.
Acting Sinivit LLG Manager Pennie Maroro Junior addressed these concerns, revealing that the Provincial Lands Division is expected to visit and address land issues across key wards, including Laup, Sunam, and Rieit-Dadul.
âAll the plantations are privately owned, but most have been left idle for years," he explained, adding, "So, we want to acquire the Laup Plantation first, which is currently owned by the board of directors of the Tolai Warwagira show."
A senior clergy member in Sinivit, Pastor Gershon Passingan, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of government support for church-oriented community programs.
He encouraged the government to focus on long-term solutions by providing resources to strengthen community bonds and support local development.

RELOCATION PLANS TO BOOST TOURISM ON DOY ISLAND LLG
The Duke of York (DOY) Islands is an LLG within the Kokopo District in East New Britain, boasting pristine waters with unique diving spots, and other areas of canoeing, fishing, snorkeling, bird watching, picnics, swimming, and scenic views for those who opt for island getaways and sightseeing.
It is a full package of activities for tourism; thus, the Kokopo City Authority (KCA) is planning to enhance its tourism industry.
KCA Board Chairman, and Kokopo MP, Ereman ToBaining announced this at a recent boat launching in Kokopo.
He revealed that islanders of Malim Atoll Ward, part of this group of rural islands LLG, would be relocated to the Rakanda plantation, on the main island of Romaina.
The DOY Islands LLG consists of the main Romoaina Island, with several smaller islands, including atolls.
Mr. ToBaining said the KCA Board has approved a paper to purchase 1, 000 hectares of the plantation from the Catholic Archdiocese, to resettle the people from Mualim island.
"We will then convert Mualim island into a tourism destination,â ToBaining explained, adding, âThis is part of our 20-year plan.â
âWe are also discussing with the United Church to acquire about 50 to 100 hectares of the Ulu Plantation that is sitting idle.â
âThis would be done under a 99-year lease or so, to enable us to bring in development," ToBaining said.
Darius Kunai, the acting Administrator for Kokopo District, also explained KCA is targeting the coastline of Rakanda and Ulu plantations owned by the 2 churches to kick off tourism projects on the island LLG.
"The district business arm - Kokopo District Development Corporation (KDDC) will be driving this initiative.â
âIt's (KDDC) already registered and soon we will advertise the position for the manager to come on board and start off these projects.â
âAlso, under the tourism program for the LLG, part of the K500, 000 for the LLG this year was allocated for the fencing of the Molot Missionary cemetery," Kunai said.
The cemetery consists of missionaries from Fiji and others that came to the area with Dr. George Brown and were buried there

YOUTHS SURRENDER WEAPONS IN WARANGOI | MP URGES PEACE
In East New Britain, around 200 youths, including juveniles, voluntarily surrendered their weapons in a significant ceremony held at Sinivit LLG grounds in Pomio District on Saturday, November 9.
The weapons were mostly homemade, alongside a few factory-made bullets.
Additionally, wards from Inland Baining surrendered home-brewing equipment and promised to stop growing and consuming marijuana.
This event followed a call made by Pomio MP and Health Minister, Elias Kapavore at Warangoi Secondary School a week prior.
Minister Kapavore had urged council/ward members from the LLGâs 18 wards to address the rising law and order issues in the area and encouraged youths to surrender their weapons.
In his speech, Kapavore assured attendees - these youths - that no arrests would be made for those who came forward willingly.
Minister Kapavore also mentioned the recently endorsed Anti-Terrorism Act by the National Executive Council (NEC).
âWith this law in place, the police force will have additional powers and upgraded equipment to track down criminals."
"But we donât want anything bad happening to our children in Sinivit LLG, and thatâs why we are here for this program,â he said.
Kapavore expressed his hope for peace during the upcoming festive season and reminded youths that those disrupting the community would face consequences.
âThereâs a reason why you did not die within the hour you were born; this is because God has a plan for you!"
After the surrender, the youths provided their basic information through a formal process, signing agreements to participate in government-supported programs.
Minister Kapavore expressed optimism, saying, âWe will see how we can work together to build Sinivit LLG back to a good society, to have peace, order, and harmony.â
Adding to this, East New Britain Governor, Michael Marum urged local stakeholders, including parents, to actively support the youths.
He cautioned parents, saying, âOne of the key issues raised by youths from Rieit ward is the lack of parental care."
"Parents, when you neglect your children and they get into such criminal activities and end up in trouble, you are the very ones that will come crying and begging for their lives - so play your part at home.â
Also witnessing the surrender was Sinivit LLG President and Deputy Governor for East New Britain, Boniface Gerep, and local police.
Meanwhile, as a follow up, a reconciliation program has been set for December 1st.

PUBLIC & POLICE URGED TO LOOK AFTER SHOPS IN THE CITY
The incident of January 10th, 2024 left many suffering in different ways, with shop owners losing their businesses, employees losing their jobs, and the public losing shops that they once called gardens to go to when they needed food.
That's from the new Commander of the National Capital District and Central Province acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benjamin Turi, when speaking at the re-opening of the Papindo shopping Complex at Gerehu this morning, further urging the public to cooperate with police to maintain law and order in Port Moresby city.
ACP Turi also stressed to everyone who gathered there that he would come down hard on police regarding their roles and responsibilities as well.
He said police officers must maintain public order and safety, enforce laws, prevent crimes, and respond to emergencies, accidents, and disasters. Stressing this, he said police alone cannot do that as they will depend on the public to help support them in fully realizing their roles.
âI therefore urge everyone to step up as responsible citizens to maintain peace, order and safety of our shops in Gerehu and Papindo is one of them. It is our responsibility to look after all the business houses in Port Moresby," Commander Turi said.
Mr. Turi while recalling the incidents of January 10th said it was a sad day for him and his family plus everyone in Port Moresby as they stood and watched shops that they used to get food from go down in flames.
Furthermore, he added that among the numerous shops that were destroyed, Papindo was notably affected. This company, which has been serving Papua New Guinea for fifty years, is a significant employer and a contributor to community services, benefiting many citizens.
âSeeing it re-open today brings great joy and hope for our Gerehu community. Papindo is not just a shop, but a part of our community; the late Sir Soekandar, together with his wife Lady Susan Tjandra, founded the Papindo Group of Companies in Lae in 1974. With that, it is 100 per cent PNG owned. It is one of our local businesses and the testament to that is that the Late Sir Soekandra was laid to rest in Lae, Morobe Province where he initially established Papindo,â stressed ACP Turi.
Commander Turi acknowledged the presence of the NCD Governor who officially cut the ribbon to open the shop, Including the presence of all the guests from Indonesia and PNG who worked for Papindo Group of Companies.
He further assured them that police in the city would work closely with them to make sure that such incidents won't happen again.
