National Capital District (NCD) Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika urges NCD Residents to uphold "Respect" to maintain a peaceful festive season in Port Moresby. Met. Supt. Sika stressed this in a recent statement to the PNG Hausbung, stating that respect is a crucial factor to a peaceful festive celebration. Sika emphasized the spirit of unity and mutual respect demonstrated during Christmas was truly commendable, reflecting the values we hold dear as a community. He urges citizens to carry forward this spirit of respect into the upcoming New Year celebrations, emphasizing that a united effort is crucial for fostering a secure and thriving NCD. As the region prepares to welcome 2025, Sika appealed to all residents to celebrate responsibly, respect the rule of law, and remain vigilant. He reminded the public that law enforcement officers would continue to be on high alert to ensure safety. “Let us begin 2025 with the same commitment to peace and respect that defined this Christmas. Boroko City wardens demonstrated their commitment to public safety by rescuing a by-stander's snatched phone including the phone snatcher. A lady at Boroko nearly lost her phone from a petty criminal however, the vigilant city wardens acted promptly, recovering the phone and apprehending the suspect on the spot. The suspect was handed over to the Boroko Police Station, where he remains in custody and will be charged. Police are collecting statements from the wardens and the victim as part of the formal investigation process. This incident highlights The sensitive role city wardens play in maintaining security and order in high-traffic areas such as Boroko remain crucial to public safety. Since their deployment a month ago, the wardens have responded to numerous incidents involving theft and other disturbances. Their efforts complement the work of the police, ensuring the city remains safe for residents and visitors. The public has expressed gratitude for the wardens’ presence and proactive measures, particularly in areas like Boroko and Gordons. The NCD Governor's Cup Judiciary has ruled that the incomplete Final Cup Playoffs match between the 8 Mile Settlers and Kone Storms will resume following a contentious ending. The game, which was halted with 20 minutes remaining, will continue to ensure a fair outcome. During the initial match, the 8Mile Settlers led 8-0 in the second half when the Kone Storms raised concerns about the referee’s decisions, claiming bias and unfair calls on offences and penalties. Frustration over the officiating prompted the Storms to request a replacement referee, which led to the abrupt suspension of the game after 60 minutes of play. Following an official complaint and appeal lodged by the Kone Storms, the Judiciary Committee reviewed the situation and concluded that the match should be completed today. The committee remains committed to ensuring fairness and sportsmanship in the competition and has allowed for the teams to continue their match. The rematch promises an intense showdown as both teams vie to settle the score. With only 20 minutes left on the clock and the 8mile Settlers leading with 8-0, the continuation will test the resolve and determination of both sides. Meanwhile, the Judiciary’s decision is still pending for two more games including the D8 Mosquitoes and Mountain Bulls.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church Mission in Bougainville has celebrated its 100th Anniversary, which started on the 18th of December 2024 and will finish on the 31st of December 2024. The two weeks long programs are a worship celebration program, that saw more that 6000 seventh day Adventist church members from Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB), New Guinea Islands, and even from the neighbouring Islands across the Solomon Islands turned up to mark this historic event in the history of Seventh Day Adventist church in AROB. The 100 years Anniversary program is happening at Rumba, in Kieta under the theme, “Gospel Flame”. On Thursday, December 26, Prime Minister (PM) James Marape travelled to Bougainville to take part in the historic celebration and to also officiate the closing of the program. During the Prime Minister official address to the people of Bougainville and the Seventh day Adventist church, he highlighted the important work of missions that helps to heal people after the Crisis and will continue to do so. Marape further encouraged youth to be faithful in church and to become good citizens, adding that youth must also go back to their village and be useful with the resources God has already provided. Marape on behalf of the government has given K1million to support the Bougainville SDA mission.

The lack of communication between the public and emergency services such as the Fire department, St Johns Ambulance and the Police, has contributed to the rise in crime and casualties. Although reports of tragedies, crime, disasters, or existential issues flood the internet on a timely manner, no proper channel is used to contact authorities directly to respond to incidents. The public must seriously acknowledge the proper channel to respond to authorities during life threatening events, for the safety and wellbeing of those involved and those around you. However, when reporting incidents via social media or directly to police, the information must be credible. Verifying information with multiple sources before sharing or tagging authorities ensures that authorities are directed to current and legitimate concerns, avoiding distractions caused by incorrect reports. Additionally, public safety is enhanced by acknowledging and supporting the tireless work of police officers. Midnight shifts can be particularly challenging and recognizing the dedication of officers who ensure safety throughout the night fosters community respect and cooperation. The tragic death of the late Senior Constable has not only shocked the community but also spurred the speculation misinformation on social media said the ACP and he is urging the public to refrain from sharing false claims, which risk undermining the current investigation and also causing further unrest. “I want to strongly denounce these unsubstantiated rumors. If anyone has credible information, I urge them to come forward and report it to the Provincial Police Commander instead of spreading falsehoods on social media,” he stated. ACP Tondop highlighted the dangers of misinformation in this sensitive matter, noting its potential to incite tensions along major highways and within communities. He has also directed the Hela Provincial Police Commander (PPC) to file a cybercrime complaint against those spreading false allegations online. This includes investigations to be launched to identify and hold accountable individuals responsible for the misinformation. Three suspects are in police custody and will undergo a thorough investigation following the tragic death of Senior Police Constable, the late George Lapon in Hela province. Police in Hela Police have apprehended two men and a woman following suspicious behaviour portrayed during the time of incident on Friday. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for the Western End, Joseph Tondop emphasized assurance to PNG Hausbung of the police force’s unwavering commitment to solving this murder case of one of its own. “We will not rest until we get to the bottom of this,” he stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the investigation. ACP Tondop stressed that according to initial reports, the woman who was with late Constable Lapon at the time of the incident has been taken into custody, along with two other individuals present within the vicinity where the incident took place. “Police are working diligently to clarify their roles and gather further evidence. Leading the investigation is the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in Tari, supported by local law enforcement, “said Tondop. While acknowledging that fear has driven some people into hiding, ACP Tondop said community cooperation in advancing the investigation should help police. He expressed confidence that as tensions ease, more information would surface. “The community’s assistance is vital. We are working with local leaders to encourage cooperation and ensure the safety of everyone involved,” he said. The late Senior Constable George Lapon lost his life in Tari town on Friday 20th December 2024. He served with distinction for 15 years in Hela Province’s Special Service Division Mobile Squad 09. He was well known and respected and his death has sent shockwaves through the community. Police remain committed and determined to pursue all leads and ensuring justice is served for this dedicated officer’s untimely passing.
