NCD POLICE CRACK DOWN ON CRIME
Police in Port Moresby city have demonstrated swift and effective action in tackling crime, successfully resolving several incidents in the past week.
The quick response by Police in handling reports throughout the past weeks have led to a boost in public confidence in Police, including the NCD City Wardens for ensuring order in public areas.
NCD Sector Patrol 201 swiftly recovered a stolen laptop and apprehended two suspects within 24 hours on January 21st, 2025. The victim led officers to the suspect, who confessed and revealed the laptop's location. Police arrested the second suspect and recovered the laptop. Both suspects are now in custody, awaiting court appearances.
Police also responded to a break-and-enter at Glory Estate, Eight Mile, where ten armed men stole three phones, a laptop, and K30,000 in cash. Officers tracked one of the stolen phones, leading to the arrest of three suspects, who are now detained at Boroko Police Station. Efforts to apprehend the remaining seven suspects are ongoing.
Despite inappropriate language towards police officers including the attack of a police officer by a group of men at Erima Flyover Bridge, police have not wavered from their duties and continue to reinforce public safety and law and order throughout the city.
Meanwhile, only one of the alleged suspects was detained for questioning regarding the officerâs attack. Investigation have already kicked off to identify the group of men responsible.
The residents have recognized the tireless effort from the NCD Police Divisional Command including City Wardens in their dedication and quick response initiative, which have been instrumental in addressing crime and ensuring justice in public areas.
Residents are encouraged to report crimes promptly and support law enforcement efforts to maintain safety in the community.

SCHOOL BOARD WANTS HEADS OF SCHOOL TO REMAIN
The Wawin National School of Excellence in Morobe province, has urged the education board to respect the school governing board's decision on retaining its current heads back this year.
The communities' representative to School Governing Council Board, Mr. Jim Kelly, said the education board must respect the school governing board's decision to retain the current school principal, Mr. Pal Pu and along with his two deputies back at Wawin National School of Excellence.
âWe have come a long way and managed to place the school as the second best performing secondary school in the country.â
âWe have plans to expand the school building infrastructures and improving ways on delivering effective teaching to produce competent students.â
âThe National education board's decision to post our current principal and his two deputies out of Wawin National School of Excellence will affect our long-term plans.â
The school responded after hearing that the National Education Board was in the process of posting a principal from Sogeri National School of Excellence and a deputy from Wabag Secondary school.
Kelly stated that under the current principal and his two deputies, the school has improved on putting best academic performances in the country last year and they would like to maintain that result.
He also added that the surrounding communities are likely to stage a peace protest by locking the school gate from commencing academic year this week or anytime if the national education board overthrows the school governing board's decision to maintain its current school heads.
He said a meeting minute with resolutions to maintain the school heads has been passed and amended in the last meeting held last year and delivered to the National Education Board.

LESS THAN 15 DAYS TO GO FOR JT 9s RUGBY TOURNAMENTÂ
Excitement is in the air as fans look forward to the Justin Tkatchenko (JT) 9s Rugby Tournament which is expected to kick off on February 6th.
The Tournament Director, Mr. Bagelo Solien shared to PNG HAUSBUNG that only 13 days remain before the start of the tournament, and teams have already flooded for registration, emphasizing the preparations and expectations for this yearâs competition.
The tournament has already accommodated 84 teams for Senior Menâs, Under-20 and womenâs division.
Mr. Solien emphasized that the tournament will limit the number of teams in each division. Senior-men's division will feature 44 teams, 40 teams for U-20, while women are expected 16 teams.
According to Mr. Solien, each pool will progress 24 Teams for the main event for senior-menâs and U-20, top 16 teams will qualify and compete for the prestigious Cup, Plate and Bowl, while teams ranked 17-24 will vie for the penance, excluding the U-20. The womenâs division, the top 8 teams will compete for top Honors.
Mr. Solien stressed that most teams are fulfilling their requirements, although last-minute entries continue to trickle in.
âTo enhance the experience, logistics like transport arrangements must be provided by Team management to ensure smooth operations,â said Mr. Solien.
Mr. Solien also highlighted the tournamentâs emphasis on safety, fair play, and sportsmanship, with strict medical checks and a zero-tolerance policy on misconduct.
The official launch on February 6th will include a fireworks display, marking the start of the significant JT 9s with the grand final winner to walk away with K50,000 that coincides with the countryâs 50th anniversary celebrations.
This yearâs event promises to deliver thrilling rugby league action and unforgettable moments for all involved.

MONO MUTRUS BROTHERS CLAIM VICTORY IN RIGO RICE CUP
The Mono Mutrus Brothersâ team manager, Mr. Tony Kili has expressed his profound joy and gratitude following their victory in the KCK Rigo Rice Cup Leg- 1 Grand Final, after defeating D8 Mosquitoes 12-6 on Sunday in Port Moresby city.
âI want to thank the KCK Rigo Rice Cup for providing an outstanding platform for rugby league,â Mr. Kili said.
âIt has given us a purpose to play, and I am glad our team emerged victorious today.â
He also extended his respect to their opponents, acknowledging their fierce competition.
Hailing from the Moresby North- West suburb of Hohola, the Mono Mutrus Brothers overcame financial challenges, relying solely on Mr. Kiliâs unwavering support.
âWithout any sponsors or partners, I have supported the boys, and I am so proud of their performance,â he said.
Mr. Kili, alongside his Head Coach Mr. Lindsay Tami emphasized that the teamâs fans played a crucial role in boosting the team's morale, particularly during the second half. Their energy propelled the team to secure a decisive try, cementing their lead and ultimately claiming the title.
Looking ahead, Mr. Kili and the team are determined to prepare for the playoffs in March, where they will face top contenders.

KOITA COWBOYS DOMINATE TARE NATION IN CURTAIN RAISER
The KCK Rigo Rice Cup Leg-1 Grand Final Curtain Raiser match on Sunday delivered an intense clash where the Koita Cowboys secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Tare Nation in a very tight game.
Fans flooded the venue and were treated to a thrilling display of tactical rugby and unwavering defense in the 70-minute encounter.
The first half saw Koita Cowboys Ian Gaita breaking the deadlock with a decisive try, earning four points for his team.

SS DOLPHINS STUN TALAI SPARTANS IN A THRILLER MATCH
The SS Dolphins edged past the Talai Spartans with a narrow 15-14 victory in the KCK Rigo Rice Cup Leg- 2 Round 2.
The first half saw the Talai Spartans dominate early with three successful tries by Jeffery Tumbulan and Nelson Philip, with Philip also converted a successful conversion and a penalty kick, racking up 14 points.
However, the second half was a remarkable comeback for the Dolphins. Benson Albert, Eddie John, and Jacob Peter scored one try each, with Ita Paisoi successfully converting two crucial points. Paisoi's late one-point field goal sealed the dramatic victory for the Dolphins.

BURIA REDS & DAREBO MIX DOGS DRAW IN TIGHT MATCH
The Buria Reds (BR) held off the Darebo Mix Dogs (DMD) in a thrilling 16-16 draw on Saturday 18th in the KCK Rigo Rice Cup Leg-2 Round 2 match at the Bava Park in Port Moresby city, with the intense 70 minutes showdown left fans on the edge of their seats.
The first half saw both teams locked in a battle of precision, with DMDâs Richard Ata assisted his team take the lead on the score board with a try and Uda Morea converted a successful penalty conversion shortly after.
The Reds responded with Morea Tai crossing over the try line for a try but followed by an unsuccessful conversion. Buria Reds went into halftime trailing the DMD 6-4.
The second half brought more drama as DMDâs scored two tries by Jayjay Waka and Uda Morea adding four points each, continuing their relentless effort to break away. However, the BR mounted a spirited response through Morea Taiâs and Lou Nouâs contributions of two separate tries and two successful conversions by Karavu Vagi.

The first half was closely contested and despite a penalty in the first half, the Baruni Development took an early lead in the first half through Karava Mafuâs first try, earning four points. Manu Mix Birdies managed to stay in the game thanks to Aua Sedeâs precision scoring a try to respond, leveling the scores at 4-4 despite both teams causing penalties into halftime.
The second half brought more action and intensity as both teams traded out penalties.

COP KILLERS IN MENDI GIVEN 24 HOURS TO SURRENDER
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Western End, Joseph Tondop has issued 24 hours Ultimatum yesterday for cop killers in Mendi to surrender today, Friday 17th January 2025.
ACP Tondop told PNG HAUSBUNG that these cop killers along the Mountain Fire Highway in Upper Mendi Southern Highlands Province (SHP) must surrender today at 6pm or there will be consequences for their heinous actions on Tuesday 14th January 2025.
ACP Tondop has condemned the fatal shooting of the Police Constable which took place along the Mountain Fire highway.
Tondop expressed deep frustration over the incident, describing it as an act of disrespect toward law enforcement officers who were simply performing their duties.
"This was an unprovoked and cowardly attack on officers returning from duty. Such acts against the custodians of the law are intolerable," he stated.
The deceased officer while on duty was traveling with colleagues from Tari to Wabag in Mobile Squad 11 and was ambushed on the Mountain Fire highway at around 11:30-12pm.
The ambush claimed the life of the officer instantly, while two other officers of the vehicle sustained serious injuries when their vehicle was seized from the attack.
The two injured officers were rushed to the hospital, with recommendations for their transfer to Port Moresby for specialized care.
ACP Tondop has issued the 24-hour ultimatum to the leaders and residents of Timipa village to surrender the suspects responsible for the attack.
"I demand the immediate surrender of those involved. This community must cooperate to ensure justice is served," he declared.
Describing the perpetrators as "domestic terrorists," ACP Tondop called for unity among citizens to uphold the rule of law, emphasizing the importance of protecting law enforcement personnel from such heinous acts.

STAKEHOLDERS ATTEND HUMAN RIGHTS TRAINING
Thirty-five stakeholders attended a Human Rights Training on Building human rights capacity at the community level last November in Kimbe, West New Britain (WNB) province.
The event was collaborated between the Department of Justice and Attorney General (DJAG), and the Department of Community Development and Religion (DfCDR).
The initiative saw the attendance of delegates from the Youth, Youth and the Provincial Community Development Office, Catholic Womenâs Group, Council of Women, Village Court Magistrates, Police Family Sexual Violence Unit, Provincial Health Authority, District Administrators and the WNB Provincial Administration.
Despite significant legal reforms, communities across Papua New Guinea (PNG) continue to face challenges such as gender-based violence (GBV), sorcery-related violence, and discrimination.
Equipping these government officials, civil society representatives, and human rights defenders with knowledge of national and international human rights laws is essential.
The four-day training was aimed to:
- Enhance understanding of PNG human rights laws and policies.
- Understanding overview of international treaties and conventions ratified by PNG.
- Equip stakeholders with practical tools to advocate for human rights protection locally.
- Promote awareness of the 20 Days of Human Rights Activism.
Patricia Gure, DJAGâs Executive Manager for the Human Rights Secretariat, emphasized the importance of stakeholders to obtain effective knowledge to advocate for human rights in their communities.
âThis training will provide stakeholders with the knowledge to advocate for human rights at the community level and enhance efforts to tackle violence and discrimination,â she said.
The EU-PNG Partnership for Good Governance (P4GG) programme who partnered with UN Women prioritize the importance of collaboration and capacity building to strengthen governance and institutional frameworks.
These development partners provided technical advisory support to ensure the training was delivered effectively and aligned with PNGâs broader human rights goals.
Julian Whayman, P4GGâs Deputy Team Leader, stated that the initiative supports the EUPNG Partnership for Good Governance's mission to build capacity for human rights advocacy and strengthen governance and institutional frameworks in PNG.
To address human rights challenges in the country, the training further highlighted the power of a unified approach.
