12 TEAMS CONFIRMED TO TAKE PART IN DIGICEL CUP 2023
The PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNG NRLC), yesterday confirmed the 12 teams that
will be participating in the 2023 season of its flagship competition, also known as the Digicel
Cup.
The highly anticipated announcement comes after months of deliberation with key stakeholders
and the Board of the PNG NRLC.
PNG NRLC Board Director, Lorna McPherson confirmed the participation of 11 franchises from
the 2022 competition, noting the exclusion of Jiwaka franchise, Waghi Tumbe, and announcing
the inclusion of the new franchise, the Sepik Pride.
The 2023 participating teams are:
● Kroton Hela Wigmen
● Agmark Rabaul Gurias
● PRK Mendi Muruks
● Lae Snax Tigers
● PRK Gulf Isou
● CPG Central Dabaris
● Kimbe Cutters
● Bintangor Goroka Lahanis
● EPG Enga Mioks
● Wamp Nga Mt. Hagen Eagles
● NCDC-Moni Plus Vipers
● EMK Sepik Pride (New)
McPherson in welcoming the new franchise said, “The PNG NRLC is determined to see the
game grow. It was not an easy decision to make but a necessary one. Whilst we want to see the
game grow it is important that the standards we have worked hard to have in place over almost
a decade is not compromised.”
“With this inclusion of another team we are excited to see a new brand of rugby league that will
be played and brought in by the Sepik Pride. This brings to two teams now from the Northern
confederate, after the Lae Snax Tigers,” she added.
The inclusion of the Sepik Pride, came after Waghi Tumbe’s participation in the competition was
terminated, leaving an available slot in the 12-team roster.
The Jiwaka Franchise’s termination of participation was the result of failure to participate in
round 17 of the 2022 season on August 28th, with no notice, that was to be played in Lae.
“The necessary processes were undertaken in providing an opportunity to the Tumbe to show
cause and appeal the PNG NRLC’s decision to terminate their license to participate. It is
unfortunate that we see a team take leave from the competition, but the PNG NRLC has not
seen a forfeiture of this nature and this was a serious breach of our Participation Agreement, to
which all teams consent to when signing,” PNGRFL CEO Mr Stanley Hondina said.
Both the Waghi Tumbe and the Sepik Pride were appropriately notified of this NRLC Board
decision.

ZOOM TO LAY OFF 1,300 EMPLOYEES
Zoom on Tuesday said it will lay off about 1,300 employees, or approximately 15% of its staff, becoming the latest tech company to announce significant job cuts as a pandemic-fueled surge in demand for digital services wanes.
In a memo to employees, Zoom’s CEO Eric Yuan said the layoffs would impact every part of the organization. Yuan also said he and other executives would take a significant pay cut, after acknowledging he made “mistakes” in how quickly the company grew during the pandemic.
“As the CEO and founder of Zoom, I am accountable for these mistakes and the actions we take today– and I want to show accountability not just in words but in my own actions,” he wrote. “To that end, I am reducing my salary for the coming fiscal year by 98% and foregoing my FY23 corporate bonus.”
Yuan said members of the executive leadership team will reduce their base salaries by 20% for the coming fiscal year and forfeit their fiscal year 2023 bonuses.
Shares of Zoom rose nearly 9% in midday trading Tuesday following the announcement.
Zoom, more than most companies, came to define the early days of the pandemic, as many turned to its platform to video chat with friends and colleagues during lockdowns. By mid-2020, Zoom reported skyrocketing revenue fueled by a spike in business customers from the many companies forced to turn to remote work.
Yuan said the company staffed up “rapidly” during the early days of the pandemic to support the boom in demand as many turned to its platform to video chat with friends and colleagues. “Within 24 months, Zoom grew 3x in size to manage this demand while enabling continued innovation,” Yuan wrote.
Zoom stock declined significantly last year, however, as more workers returned to office life.
Zoom is far from the only pandemic darling to experience a sharp comedown. Peloton, for example, has gone through several rounds of layoffs. Much of Big Tech, which also grew fast during the pandemic, has since announced layoffs, too.
And late Tuesday, eBay (EBAY) said in a regulatory filing that it would cut about 500 jobs globally — about 4% of its employee base — during the next 24 hours.

NZ AUTHORITIES INTERCEPTED MORE THAN 3 TONNES OF COCAINE
The discovery of 81 bales of cocaine will land a "major financial blow" to illegal drug market, Police Commissioner says.
New Zealand authorities have intercepted more than three tonnes of cocaine from a vessel in the Pacific Ocean.
A media conference is being held at Police National Headquarters detailing the bust.
Operation Hydros - a joint mission by police, Customs and the Defence Force - seized 81 bales of the drug, totalling 3.2 tonnes, with an estimated street value of half a billion dollars.
The shipment is destined for destruction, having since made the six-day journey back to New Zealand aboard the Royal New Zealand Navy vessel HMNZS Manawanui.
Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said given the large size of the shipment it would have likely been destined for the Australian market.

"There is no doubt this discovery lands a major financial blow right from the South American producers through to the distributors of this product," Coster said.
"This is one of the single biggest seizures of illegal drugs by authorities in this country. While this disrupts the syndicate's operations, we remain vigilant given the lengths we know these groups will go to circumvent coming to law enforcement's attention."
Operation Hydros started in December 2022, as part of the police's ongoing work with international partner agencies to identify and monitor suspicious vessels' movements, he said.
"I am incredibly proud of what our National Organised Crime Group has achieved in working with other New Zealand agencies, including New Zealand Customs Service and the New Zealand Defence Force. The significance of this recovery and its impact cannot be underestimated."
While no arrests have been made at this stage, enquiries were continuing internationally.

New Zealand Customs Service acting comptroller Bill Perry said his agency was pleased to have "helped prevent such a large amount of cocaine causing harm in communities here in New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere in the wider Pacific region".
"The sheer scale of this seizure is estimated to have taken more than half a billion dollars' worth of cocaine out of circulation.
"It is a huge illustration of what lengths organised crime will go to with their global drug trafficking operations and shows that we are not exempt from major organised criminal drug smuggling efforts in this part of the world," he said.
New Zealand Defence Force joint forces commander Rear Admiral Jim Gilmour said they had "the right people and the right capabilities to provide the support required".
"We were very pleased with the result and are happy to be a part of this successful operation and are proud to play our part in protecting New Zealand."

The Airport Ambassadors as they are called have been providing much needed assistance within the Jacksons Domestic and International Terminals between November 2022 and January 2023 which is the busiest period at Jacksons International Airport as many passengers travel in and out for the holidays.

DEPARTMENT OF ICT WORKING ON FORMING A N3C
The Department of Information and Communications Technology is embarking on implementing its public investment programs in 2023, which include in particular, the Cyber Security Network and the Digital Government Infrastructure and Service.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Information and Communications Technology Hon. Timothy Masiu, when addressing the Commonwealth Conference on Cybercrime in the Pacific, in Port Moresby on Monday.
“The Department of ICT is currently formalizing and onboarding key cyber agencies in PNG that will form a national cyber coordinating committee (N3C) which will speed up reporting, technical verification by backend technology, and cooperation with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) Cybercrime Unit, leading to search warrants and prosecution,” Minister Masiu said.
DICT has made progress so far in collaborating with the National Censorship Office in relation to addressing illicit content on the Internet being accessed within PNG’s digital boundaries.
“There are also other areas such as the Dark Web which PNG needs government leadership and on the same token, I want to express my deep satisfaction that all three arms of government are deeply engaged in digital transformation and cybersecurity,” Minister Masiu added.
While the PNG Constitution entrenches the principle of ‘separation of powers, each arm of government has a duty to the citizens to digitally transform the delivery of government services and to ensure that this takes place in a cyber secure environment.
In the meantime, the Government has invited heads of the Pacific ICT institutions for an ICT dialogue in East New Britain province, to further deliberate amongst other issues, cybercrime and how ICT bodies can collaborate for a common purpose.
“The Global future is a digital future and I look forward to the outcomes of this conference, Minister Masiu added.

EAP EQUIPS TEACHER TO RUN OWN PRE-SCHOOL
Lino Eaki is on a journey to expand her business as well as providing this vital service for many working-class parents in Papua New Guinea’s capital city. equips
Steppingstone Preschool, tucked away behind a church in a suburban community has enrolled up to 10 children in its primary year of business in 2022.
Lino was part of cohort of twenty-eight other women entrepreneurs that participated in a six-week Entrepreneurship Acceleration Programme (EAP) from October to December 2022.
The programme was facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme and Credit Union Foundation Australia.
Through this programme, 28 women across Port Moresby have gained access to vital skills to grow their small businesses and address the challenges women entrepreneurs face today.
The curriculum included live instructor-led training sessions, self-paced learning, engaging speaker series by industry leaders, and mentoring sessions with private sector individuals, for additional support and networking.
“I have been teaching for over 20 years, teaching from public to private school and as a mum myself saw the need for earlier learning and childcare targeting the working class.''
Previously, from the fees I collected as school fees went to paying rentals and expansion of the school. However, attending this course has allowed me to improve on my financial management of the funds and it also taught me how to market my business online with useful digital and innovative tools and ideas.” said Lino
Women entrepreneurs benefited from a range of topics offered by the program, such as digital marketing, financial management, customer experience, logistics, and more.
Aside from digital skills, women entrepreneurs also gained practical financial skills to better manage their businesses, forecast and budget beyond for the coming years.
"I gained a lot of knowledge from this course; it has been mind boggling and as the name of my school suggests - a steppingstone. This experience gave me the confidence and the drive I needed. I am also happy to say that this has not only been a journey for me, but for my school, students and their parents - so to the organisers, I say, you have not only helped me grow but you have impacted the lives of my students and their family," she said.
Since its inception, the initiative has provided more women-led Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) with the business acumen to tackle challenges and access vital skills and tools to better manage their businesses. There has been a lot of interest and requests from the general public to continue rolling out programmes like the Entrepreneurship Acceleration Programme.

2023 NRL ALL STARS MATCH TO BE HELD IN NZ
After playing host to their Māori counterparts for the past four NRL Harvey Norman All Stars, the Indigenous squad are this week enjoying being guests in the first ever edition of the event to be held in New Zealand.
Tuesday morning saw a large gathering at the picturesque Te Papaiouru Marae, situated on the active geothermal lakefront in Rotorua, to welcome both the men’s and women’s Māori and Indigenous sides ahead of Saturday’s matches at Rotorua International Stadium.
“To have the All Stars over here is pretty good, and to learn about the Māori culture as well,” Indigenous back Selwyn Cobbo said from the marae.
“I have never seen anything like this before, it’s a lot to take in and I love the Māori culture.”
Forward Ryan James, who retired from the NRL last season but has travelled to take part in one final camp with the Indigenous side as a player, said he was in awe of the way Māori culture is embraced in Rotorua.
Five years ago the city became the first in New Zealand to be declared bilingual, with road signage in both Te Reo Māori and English.
“It's amazing to see how embedded the New Zealand Māori culture is here, it is unbelievable,” James said.
“Even to see the kids know the language and have schools that have the language.
“New Zealand are well far ahead of us [Australia] when it comes to knowing their culture and being extremely proud of who they are.
“It's just one of those things where we just have to keep learning our culture. Australia has never really taught our culture, and it's something that we're looking to change.
To see the pride that they have when everyone's performing is something that we strive for.
Ryan James
On Tuesday the men’s and women’s teams all had their first training session since arriving in New Zealand on Monday afternoon.
For Cobbo, the match against the Māori is a chance to have a starting role in the star-studded Indigenous backline after coming off the interchange in last year’s fixture, while he’s also enjoying rubbing shoulders with some childhood idols.
“I only finished school a few years ago and it wasn’t long ago that I was watching these boys on TV,” Cobbo said.
“It’s my first camp with Latrell [Mitchell], and the boys have been looking after me and taking me under their wing.
“It’s good to be back and I am proud to get picked in this team again.”
