SNAPCHAT SPECTACLES AR: AUGMENTED REALITY ON YOUR FACE

Snapchat is releasing augmented-reality (AR) glasses to let some content creators put digital creations into the world around them. AR in this case is a mix of computer graphics, such as 3D models, overlaid on the real world. But the new version of the "Spectacles" product will not be available to just anyone. Instead, the company is offering them to a "select group of global creators" in the AR field. Snapchat is known for its AR "lenses" on phones, which overlay art on a user taking a selfie, or distort the live image in many different ways. The new spectacles are an evolution from that idea, letting lens creators project their creations onto the world around them. Previous versions of Spectacles were focused on cameras for capturing content - the AR display is new to this latest release. Examples which the company showcased included a digital projection of neon sea creatures on a real-world beach, an art gallery projected onto the street, and a guided tour with enhanced visuals of a landscape. On the inside, the new tech has two cameras, four microphones and stereo speakers, and is powered by a chip specifically tuned for AR and VR. But it only has a 30-minute battery life. For now, they remain available only upon application by creators of Snapchat lenses, using the company's Lens Studio desktop software, a tool for creating 3D-modelled AR experiences. That strategy of limited release is not new. The first version of Spectacles was released by Snap Inc, the company behind Snapchat, through limited pop-up vending machines which helped create a marketing buzz around the idea. It later sold them as a regular product online - but after a year, the first version had hit Snap Inc's finances to the tune of $40m (£30m). That led to comparisons to Google's failed "smart glasses" experiment, Google Glass. Hugely popular That did not stop Snap Inc - which calls itself a camera company - from sticking with the project. The latest AR innovation is the fourth version of Spectacles. "Spectacles are the next step in Snap's journey to reinvent the camera," the company said in a press release. "The new Spectacles bring imagination to life in a natural way—with our eyes looking out at the world in front of us." Snapchat does not receive the same level of attention as other social media networks such as Facebook or Twitter, but it remains hugely popular. The company now reports that it has 500 million monthly active users. Leo Gebbie, an analyst with CCS Insight, said the new spectacles were "ambitious". "The Spectacles represent a staging post on the gradual journey to smartglasses, even if the decision to restrict their availability shows that they aren't consumer-ready just yet," he said. AR devices are getting "slimmer, lighter and more powerful", he said. "However, we're still years away from the 'holy grail' of a device which looks no different from normal eyewear, and there are lots of challenges to be overcome in device engineering and design." While still not ready for general sale, "it should spur the development of innovative and exciting new uses," he added.

BLACK FUNGUS: INDIA REPORTS NEARLY 9,000 CASES OF RARE INFECTION

India has reported more than 8,800 cases of deadly "black fungus" in a growing epidemic of the disease. The normally rare infection, called mucormycosis, has a mortality rate of 50%, with some only saved by removing an eye. But in recent months, India saw thousands of cases affecting recovered and recovering Covid-19 patients. Doctors say there is a link with the steroids used to treat Covid. Diabetics are at particular risk. Doctors have told the BBC it seems to strike 12 to 18 days after recovery from Covid. Dr Pandey said the hospital had set up 11 wards with a total of 200 beds to treat black fungus patients: "This surge in patients was definitely unexpected," he said. "We used to see one or two cases a year previously." He reckoned that there were at least 400 patients with the disease in Indore alone. "The black fungus infection has now become more challenging than Covid-19. If patients are not treated in time and properly, than the mortality rate can go up to 94%. The cost of treatment is expensive, and the drugs are in [short supply]," Dr Pandey said. There are two forms of the drug available: standard amphotericin B deoxycholate and liposomal amphotericin. Dr Pandey said he had collected data concerning 201 patients from four hospitals in the city. The majority of the patients had recovered from Covid-19 and were male. Most of them had been treated with steroids, and all had underlying conditions, mainly diabetes. A separate study by four Indian doctors has looked at more than 100 cases of Covid-19 patients who had contracted mucormycosis. It found 79 of them were men, and 83 of them suffered from diabetes. Another study of 45 black fungus patients in two Mumbai hospitals found that all were diabetics or diagnosed with diabetes on admission. They all had very steep blood sugar levels. "No patient of mucormycosis has normal blood sugar," Dr Akshay Nayar, an eye surgeon who has treated a number of patients, told the BBC. What is mucormycosis? Mucormycosis is a very rare infection. It is caused by exposure to mucor mould which is commonly found in soil, plants, manure, and decaying fruits and vegetables. "It is ubiquitous and found in soil and air and even in the nose and mucus of healthy people," says Dr Akshay Nair, a Mumbai-based eye surgeon. ONLINE DATING CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN EXPLOSION OF SYPHILIS CASES ACROSS MELBOURNE

A rise in popularity of online dating apps could be contributing to a sudden surge of sexually transmitted infections across Melbourne, epidemiologists warn. It comes as Alfred Health experts reported an increase in syphilis across Melbourne’s outer suburbs, with a 45 per cent spike in notified cases. Ophthalmologists have also reported a twenty-fold increase in people presenting with syphilis-related eye infections as Melbourne grapples with the “epidemic”. Deakin University epidemiologist Catherine Bennett said an increase in online dating and casual sex, and people missing early signs of infection, had contributed to the explosion of cases. “People have become less reliant on social events to find partners, and while socialising was restricted over the last 12 months, dating sites haven't been restricted in the same way – they’ve become a little more important in terms of linking up with others,” she said. “It obviously increasing the chances, the more likelihood to have more casual partners, then all of that contributes to the risk of picking up STIs such as syphilis.” [caption id="attachment_9346" align="aligncenter" width="1101"] Health experts reported an increase in syphilis across Melbourne’s outer suburbs, with a 45 per cent spike in notified cases.Source:Supplied[/caption] Dr Bennett also worried that people “concerned about going to a GP clinic during COVID” missed early signs of infection and risked eye-related syphilis complications. She urged people to get treated if they noticed any symptoms or were concerned they had contracted the infection. In the early 2000s the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital recorded approximately two cases per year of ocular syphilis. A team of doctors at the hospital in East Melbourne then researched the condition from 2006 to 2019. In 2018, 17 cases of ocular syphilis were recorded, with infections increasing to 21 in 2019, seven of whom were women. Once syphilis bacteria enters the body it can spread to different organs – including the eye – and if untreated can cause “irreversible damage” such as permanent blindness. Syphilis starts with an appearance of sores or ulcers before developing into a rash. If untreated, it could eventually cause a brain infection, dementia and blindness. It can be cured with penicillin, but people may not seek treatment because they do not realise they have been infected, as syphilis is often asymptomatic following signs of the initial infection. PRINCE WILLIAM RECALLS ‘PAINFUL MEMORY’ LEARNING OF PRINCESS DIANA'S DEATH

Prince William is reflecting on the death of his mother, the late Princess Diana. On Saturday, the Duke of Cambridge spoke at the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland as part of his royal tour of the country. During his remarks, the 38-year-old royal said he was at Balmoral Castle when he learned of the tragedy. Diana died in a Paris car crash in 1997 as she was being pursued by paparazzi. She was 36. "Along with listening this week, there is something I do want to tell you," William began, according to People magazine. He continued: "Scotland is incredibly important to me and will always have a special place in my heart. I've been coming to Scotland since I was a small boy. As I grew up, I saw how my grandmother [Queen Elizabeth II] relishes every minute she spends here. And my father [Prince Charles] is never happier than when walking among the hills." William went on to say that Scotland is the "source" of several of his "happiest memories" but also his "saddest." "I was in Balmoral when I was told that my mother had died. Still in shock, I found sanctuary in the service at Crathie Kirk that very morning," William shared "And in the dark days of grief that followed, I found comfort and solace in the Scottish outdoors. As a result, the connection I feel to Scotland will forever run deep." However, the country was also where he met his wife of 10 years, Kate Middleton. They were both attending St. Andrews. "And yet alongside this painful memory, is one of great joy," William stated. "Because it was here in Scotland – 20 years ago this year – that I first met Catherine." He added, "Needless to say, the town where you meet your future wife holds a very special place in your heart." MUM-OF-TWO, 49, SENT ‘YOU’VE WON’ TEXT TO HUSBAND BEFORE TAKING HER OWN LIFE

A mum sent a text saying “you’ve won” to her husband before tragically taking her own life, an inquest heard. Amanda Jayne Sedgwick, 49, was discovered dead in her bedroom after sending several messages to her husband following a fight. He was arrested on suspicion of murder but later released under investigation with no charges ever brought against him. An inquest heard how he and Amanda had been sending each other texts on May 19 last year “centred around the marriage not working”. DC Kate Norton told the hearing in Doncaster: “This had been a theme running for a long time throughout the marriage.” At 7.59pm, Amanda messaged her partner saying: “You’ve won.” He responded 10 minutes later: “I would quite happily die right now, so no [sic] you have won.” Amanda replied at 8.12pm telling her husband, “Too late.” She added: “Love that they were your last words to me.” He replied shortly after “whatever” before continuing: “Cherish them.” Amanda’s final message at 8.27pm read: “I didn’t think it would happen. I never thought a man would get me this low. “Well done you, you are so much better than me.” Tragically Amanda was discovered dead on her bed just over two hours later and had likely been dead a “couple of hours” by the time paramedics arrived. The inquest was told there was no evidence Amanda suffered from mental health issues. She had complained her husband, who denied any responsibility for her death, drank too much. Recording a verdict of suicide, Coroner Louise Slater said: “She had been with her husband for a period of 23 years and she had two sons. “The relationship had been challenging at times. At the time of Amanda’s death she had been furloughed due to COVID. “It is also clear that there were a number of texts between Amanda and her husband during the evening of May 19.” SOURCE: news.com.au

There are questions about why he met the now-deceased convicted sex offender despite reportedly knowing of his perverted past. And the image of the tech guru’s marriage to wife Melinda, which seemed rock-solid when they were a $A165 billion power couple on a mission to save the planet, has crashed as they head to the divorce courts. Sources claim that Melinda, 56, was angry that her husband had gone to the billionaire financier Epstein’s New York home and started divorce proceedings once his links to him became public in 2019. Since the announcement of the divorce just over a fortnight ago, Gates’ early days have come under scrutiny. Meanwhile, further details about the extent of Gates’ friendship with Epstein have perplexed many observers who wonder why the philanthropist would have anything to do with a convicted sex offender. The two men first got to know each other in January 2011, three years after Epstein was convicted of procuring a child for prostitution. Gates went to the financial adviser’s giant 40-room home on New York’s Upper East Side at 8pm and spent several hours there. Also present was Dr Eva Andersson-Dubin – a former Miss Sweden and ex-girlfriend of Epstein – along with her 15-year-old daughter. Epstein later bragged about the meeting in emails to a friend, seen by The New York Times, writing: “Bill’s great”. Meanwhile, Gates reportedly informed colleagues that he found the financier’s lifestyle “kind of intriguing”. It was the first of a series of meetings between the computer genius and the sex offender – including a trip on his private jet. Marriage ‘irretrievably broken’ Gates admits that it was “an error in judgment” to have met the disgraced businessman, and his spokesperson said the “intriguing” comment was a reference to Epstein’s decor. There are allegations, denied by Microsoft, that Gates even asked Epstein for advice on ending his marriage to Melinda. Feminist Melinda was especially angered by his dealings with creepy Epstein – and is said to have begun speaking to divorce lawyers after an expose about the friendship was published in 2019. “Epstein is a definitely a sore spot. That’s a long time for issues to fester,” a source told People magazine of Melinda’s decision to divorce. “She was totally opposed to what she considered shady dealings and some other issues he wanted to pursue in the business area. TEEN CHILDCARE WORKER ACCUSED OF RAPING THREE-YEAR-OLD GIRL

A British teenage childcare worker accused of raping a three-year-old girl repeatedly abused a young boy five years earlier, a jury has heard on Friday 21-05 -2021. Jayden McCarthy was 16 when he raped and sexually assaulted young children he was employed to look after at a creche in Torquay, Devon, a court heard. The court heard that McCarthy, now 18, raped a young boy at a different location not associated with the nursery around five years earlier. The alleged victim of the rape said McCarthy raped him repeatedly over the course of eight months in 2014 and 2015. The victim said a statement to police: “It felt uncomfortable. I did not like it.” The court has been told that McCarthy became an apprentice at the nursery in March 2019. Five months later, a police investigation was launched after parents of a three-year-old girl contacted them to claim that McCarthy had raped their daughter at the nursery. The police then studied hundreds of hours of CCTV from the nursery and as a result charged McCarthy with 13 counts of sexual assault on children aged between two and four. The jury was told that CCTV clips were examined which recorded footage between June 20th and July 29th 2019, taken from eleven cameras which operated between 7am and 7.30pm each day. Prosecutor Jason Beal said 265 hours of CCTV footage was viewed by police. “Many clips showed the defendant in physical contact with children,” he said. Mr Beal said clips identified by the prosecution as amounting to sexual assault led to the 13 sexual assault charges against the teenage defendant. The jury were shown the clips and then listened to the recorded police interview with the lad who claimed he was raped by McCarthy. The directors of the nursery said McCarthy was “dumbstruck” when they put the allegations to him as he was suspended. He told police that he had never touched a child sexually or for sexual gratification and denied being sexually aroused by children under the age of three and had not engaged in sexual acts. McCarthy denies a total of three rapes of a child and 13 counts of sexual assault of a child under 13 and the trial continues. SOURCE: news.com.au

NCD PHA STAFF HESITANT TO GET VACCINATED

Only 56 staff of the NCD Provincial Health Authority (NCD PHA) were vaccinated against COVID-19 out of 591 staff as of Friday the 21st of May. The NCD COVID-19 Vaccination roll out started last Friday and it has been one week with only a handful of frontline workers volunteering to be vaccinated. NCD PHA Acting CEO Mr Ken Wai confirmed these statistics and expressed his disappointment over the reluctancy displayed by the frontline health workers who are supposed to be the first ones to be vaccinated in order to work with the general public during this pandemic. He said he understands it is not mandatory for everyone to get vaccinated, but he did not expect such response from health workers. “People are believing all this misleading information on social media and we are struggling to get them vaccinated.” Me Wai said they are still pushing for more people to get vaccinated this week and he hopes more of his staff volunteer to receive the vaccine. Meanwhile the public in NCD have been showing up voluntarily to receive the vaccine, however Mr Wai said they will prioritize frontline workers and companies with their employees deemed as frontline workers. “I’m happy to see the public showing up to receive the vaccine but we do not have enough supplies to vaccinate everyone.” “That is why we will only consider frontline workers and others whom we believe also serve the purpose as frontline workers.” Said Mr Wai. The NCD PHA has been allocated 4000 doses of the AstraZeneca Vaccine and out that 4000, 3651 have been used up already. It is understood the World Health Organization and UNICEF have allocated an additional 2000 doses of the AstraZeneca Vaccine to NCD on Friday upon the request from NCD PHA for an additional supply of the vaccine.
