ST. LEO MATKOMNAI PRIMARY SCHOOL RECEIVES NEW BUS

A primary school in the North Fly District of Western Province was the proud recipient of a new school bus, thanks to a local women and children association. The St. Leo Matkomnai Primary School, located 50 kilometers away from Kiunga town, received the new 25-seater bus on June 18th from the Tutuwe Ara Women and Children Association. The association is one of 8 Women and Children Associations in the Community Mine Continuation Agreement (CMCA) region including the Ok Tedi Mine Village Women and Children’s Association in the Star Mountains. The bus, which cost K173, 256.00, will assist transport students, some of whom walk about 10 kilometers every day to attend classes. Headmistress Mrs. Winnie Iwik in thanking the association and Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF), said the bus will also help the school with its administrative purposes and school excursions. “When I travel on public PMV, I see children walking. I feel very sad for them. My heart cries for them but how can I help, so thank you Tutuwe Ara Women Children Association for donating the bus,’’ she said. The primary school is centrally located in Matkomnai village, with elementary schools in nearby villages and surrounding communities, with increasing student enrollment each year. The school has 310 students and 12 staff members, teaching classes from Grade 3 to Grade 8 respectively. Mrs. Iwik said the school is expecting increased student numbers next year due to more students attending the elementary schools in the surrounding communities. OTDF assisted the association to purchase and the transport the bus from Port Moresby.

TIPNG MEMBERS ELECT 2021 BOARD

As part of the business of the AGM, the financial members of TIPNG elected Mr Peter Aitsi as chair, Ms Michelle Hau’ofa as secretary and Mrs Akae Beach as treasurer to serve for the coming year. A further 11 individuals were also elected to serve on the board and they were; Jerome Sesega, Brian Alois, Belinda Kanau, Philip Samar, Paul Barker, Mary Udu, Richard Kassman, Christopher Elphick and Michael McWalter, Seini Fisi’ihoi and a new member to the Board, Mr. Bill Neill. In welcoming the 2021 TIPNG board directors, Chairman Peter Aitsi said, he looked forward to their active participation and contribution on the board. An important responsibility for the Board will be to oversight the governance of the organisation along with deepening the association’s long-standing relationship with the private and public sector. This relationship is even more important now in the face of the shrinking space for civil society voices and where the apparent impunity for the corrupt is becoming more blatant. “The new Board will seek to advance a number of key priorities including lending support to the establishment of a strong Independent Commission Against Corruption. Another immediate priority will be the rolling out voter education and increasing our advocacy for the proper management and conduct of the 2021 elections integrity. Our focus remains on empowering citizensto act against corruption and reduce the current level of public apathy,” said Mr Aitsi. “TIPNG has set a new course in our Strategic Plan 2019-2023 and that is to build stronger and more active partnerships. The cornerstone of sustainable change will always be in collective effort. We have sought engagement from like-minded organizations and individuals to widen the anti-corruption network across the country and with these organisations lend our combined support to the mandated watchdog agencies,” he added. The role of director of TIPNG is voluntary and directors receive no payment. The Board is responsible for setting of the organisation’s vision, articulating its purpose, managing its financial performance, statutory compliance and overall performance of TIPNG.

RESIGNATION OF PNG POWER MANAGING DIRECTOR

It is with regret that as the Chairman of PNG Power Limited (PPL), announce the resignation of the Managing Director, Mr Flagon Bekker, effective immediately. Mr. Bekker’s decision to leave the organisation after 9 months are based on personal reasons. The Chairman has indicated the appointment of Mr. Obed Batia as Officer in Charge of PNG Power, whilst a more formal engagement is finalised. Mr. Batia has over 30 years of service with the company and has served the Leadership Team with distinction and possesses outstanding credentials. I have every faith in Mr. Batia’s ability to provide much needed stability. The Chairman and Board of PNG Power will provide the new Officer in Charge and the Leadership Team with its full support, during the interim. We assure all the PNG Power employees and their families, key stakeholders and suppliers, and the valued PPL customers of continued stability during this transition period. It remains our key priority, to focus on the objectives of our Annual Operating Plan and to deliver on a promise to provide accessible, affordable and reliable energy services to the people of Papua New Guinea. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Bekker for his time here at PPL and to wish him well, as he returns to his family in Australia.

OVERWHELMING COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR THE INJURED EDAI SCHOOL KIDS

There is an overwhelming community support from residents of Edai town towards the injured school kids and their families. Since the school bus accident on Tuesday morning, 22nd June, a meeting was called by residents where an interim committee was appointed and the following day, funds were raised through a wheel barrow push within Edai town estate. Over K9,000 was raised from that fundraising drive alone with a further K5,000 chipped in by Pastor Matt Allen from Capital City Baptist Church, which is located less than 5minutes drive from Edai Town. Yesterday (Saturday, 27th June), members of Edai town interim committee together with some school children and residents visited the three severely injured kids at the Port Moresby General hospital where they presented them with care packages containing cash, get well soon letters and fresh flowers. The group spent few moments with the injured kids, (Michael Oa, 8 years old), (Letisha Heritrenggi, 7years old) and the third student, who is in grade 7 (13 years old, Millyanna Vali) and their parents, reminding them of how the entire Edai Family and their neighbours are with them at this difficult time as they go through the various stages of recovery and adaptation. Two of the three seriously injured children had lost a limb each following the accident. The committee also visited six children with minor injuries at their homes at Edai Town and presented them with cash. Chairman of Edai Town Interim Committee, Sylvester Kalaut said although the care packages may not be enough, the overwhelming support and kind gestures from residents showed the level of care, love and sympathy for the children who have been hurt and injured from the accident, some of whose lives have been changed forever. Kalaut said“ The cash was distributed accordingly to the severity of the injuries with our two amputees receiving K3,000 each , followed by K2,000 for the third severely injured child who had operation on one of the legs. The six children with minor injuries received K700 each. This may not enough but just to help with the immediate needs of the injured children and their families while taking care of them in the hospital.” We still have other immediate needs like counselling to do and are appealing to those who are able to provide the service to come forward. Those corporate companies operating along the Napanapa stretch of the highway who wish to support our injured children and their families at this time, please do get in touch with us, the kids have immediate needs as well as the long term needs.” Kalaut said. A member of the interim committee and resident, Wesley Spinder said “ It was an emotional and heartbreaking moment for us to see the little ones lying on their beds, fighting silently the pain and tears. We all shed tears. But on the flip side, to see the beaming smile on their innocent faces just gave us hope and lit up our hearts. They are brave, strong and true fighters. They are smiling and doing well despite the life altering injuries. “ Following the hospital visit yesterday, the interim committee met with Edai Town Management and stake holders to discuss a petition by the residents last week following the accident. The petition among others call for security/safety controls and protocols to be in place including induction for drivers operating school transport, immediate support and care for affected families and future plans for the children with permanent injuries. Edai Town Management has assured of some long term plans for the affected children which will be made known to the residents during a meeting next Sunday, 04th July. For now the Edai Town management/developer are meeting with the stakeholders before talking to the residents. Tragedy hit Edai town on Tuesday 22nd June before 7am when a 25 seater school shuttle bus transporting Primary school children crashed into a guardrail on the Napanapa highway, less than 5minutes after leaving Edai township. The nasty accident left three children seriously injured, two ended up having their legs amputated and 7 others who received minor injuries to the various part of their bodies. The accident was only four days after the first accident also involving Edai school kids on Friday 18th June when the driver of another bus who was reported to be drunk drove into the Edai school bus, two children received minor injuries, one has fractured bones and the other scratches. Both accidents are under police investigation before formal charges can be laid. The driver of the second accident was initially put behind police cells.

MARAPE GOVERNMENT HELPS DEVELOPMENT OF SMES

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape says his Government has made several deliberate interventions to help small to medium enterprises (SMES) during this time of economic hardship. He said this when addressing the 3rd SME Business Breakfast at APEC Haus in Port Moresby on Friday (June 25th 2021) which also marked the end of SME Week. PM Marape said these interventions included: 1. District Services Improvement Programme (DSIP) allocated to each district; 2. Provincial Services Improvement Programme (PSIP) to each province; 3. Connect PNG infrastructure development; and 4. K180 million SME funding to Bank South Pacific (BSP, K100 million) and National Development Bank (NDB, K80 million). “We have, first and foremost, the DSIP and PSIP programmes,” he said. “DSIP and PSIP is a direct intervention that uplifts a district, wherever they are.” PM Marape said there was an established procurement system in place, hence, an MP could not just draw down on district or provincial funds. He said these interventions had resulted in construction of infrastructure in rural areas like the road from Tabubil to Hindenburg Wall in Western, Karamui Road in Chimbu, Siassi Ring Road in Morobe, and all over the country. “These (contracts) are not run by Chinese, Australian or American companies, these are done by local, little SME-based companies – the small one, or three machine owners who are out there doing work, employing 50 Papua New Guineans,” PM Marape said. He said his Government had made a commitment to help SMEs after he took office in 2019, and in 2020, channeled K100 million to BSP and K80 million to BSP. PM Marape said BSP was rolling out the programme, however, he was “discouraged” by the delays at NDB and would meet its board and management to find out why. He commended Kina Bank for setting up an SME facility with no Government assistance. PM Marape thanked all banks for supporting the development of SMEs in the country.

MAROONS V BLUES: WALSH, MULITALO OUT AND COATES IN; BLUES GOOD TO GO

With centre duo Tom Trbojevic and Latrell Mitchell running amok, and Origin debutants Jarome Luai and Brian To'o putting their stamp on the interstate contest in memorable fashion, the Blues were unstoppable in racking up a 50-6 win in game one. The Blues were virtually unaffected by Queensland closing its borders to residents from Sydney's COVID-19 hotspots and continued Origin camp in Kingscliff on the northern NSW. The NSW squad headed north on Monday and was COVID tested before entering camp. The team has already been to the Gold Coast, where they completed border declaration forms. The Blues moved to Queensland on Friday leading into game two on Sunday at Suncorp Stadium. The Maroons had a host of players unavailable or underdone in the series opener and have just as many headaches this time around with both forced and unforced changes in their squad and with a short build-up to try and get things right for game two. Hooker and fullback have been their hardest-hit positions with Harry Grant (hamstring) joining Reed Mahoney and the retired Jake Friend on the unavailable list while Kalyn Ponga and AJ Brimson are both out of contention for the fullback spot. Reece Walsh was handed a debut in the No.1 jersey after just seven NRL games but the youngster was forced to withdraw the day before the game after injuring his hamstring at training. Team news Maroons: A massive blow for Queensland with rookie fullback Reece Walsh ruled out after breaking down during the captain's run on Saturday. The QRL said in a statement that Walsh needed treatment for a low grade hamstring strain and had been ruled out. Sharks winger Ronaldo Mulitalo originally came into the team as winger but was withdrawn on Sunday morning due to doubt over his eligibility. Xavier Coates will start on the wing. Titans forward Jai Arrow was treated in hospital with a course of intravenous antibiotics but returned to training on Thursday with his forearm strapped with a guard on it. Prior to joining the Queensland Maroons camp, Arrow was receiving oral antibiotics to treat an infection. Team doctor Matt Hislop admitted Arrow to hospital to "get on top of it quickly”. Andrew McCullough comes in at hooker for Grant with his Dragons teammate Ben Hunt also returning to the Maroons fold in Brimson's place as the bench utility. Josh Papalii (suspension) returns in the front row with Cowboys prop Francis Molo handed a debut on the interchange. Tino Fa'asuamaleaui shifts to lock, Jai Arrow to second row and David Fifita to the bench. Blues: The Blues had a clean bill of health after the captain's run on Saturday. Tom Trbojevic returned to Blues training on Thursday having sat out a session earlier in the week. Trbojevic told NRL.com he missed the session due to player load as he had gone around on Sunday for Manly. He said it had nothing to do with trying to protect his hamstrings. Former skipper Boyd Cordner was also on hand at Blues training on Thursday to help out with preparations for Sunday's game. With prop Jake Trbojevic ruled out by a hip injury, Storm lock Dale Finucane and Roosters back-rower Angus Crichton were added to a 20-man squad. Finucane was omitted on Saturday when the squad was cut to 19. Junior Paulo takes Trbojevic's place in the starting front row with Crichton named on the interchange and Finucane on the extended bench with Campbell Graham. Api Koroisau is once again 18th man. The young Panther's confidence and assuredness belied his experience while Munster looked off the pace after not having played for a month due to a foot injury. Expect Munster to be better in this one while Luai again won't be taking any backward steps. Stat attack The Blues had the top four and six of the top seven players for run metres gained in game one, as well as the top four and seven of the top eight for tackle breaks. PM MARAPE HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANT ROLE OF SMES

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has highlighted the important role small to medium enterprises (SMES) play in economic development. He also commended local SMES for staging PNG SME Week at APEC Haus in Port Moresby from June 21-25, when addressing the 3rd SME Business Breakfast on Friday (June 25th 2021) to mark the end of SME Week. “Thank you (SMES) for what you have been doing this week,” PM Marape said. “Many nations globally are built on SMEs.” He pointed to the example of neighboring Indonesia, which had over 50 million SMEs, which were the engine room of the economy. PM Marape also highlighted New Zealand, which he visited last year, a country about the same size as PNG but an economic powerhouse built on SMEs. “New Zealand is a country almost the same land size as ours,” he said. “Their economy is really dependent on SMEs that are based around agriculture, tourism and cottage industries. “This is a place that we could source inspiration from. “Based on those small-scale, SME-based industries, they have a US$200 billion economy that keeps them running.” PM Marape said New Zealand did not have large-scale mining, oil and gas projects, but had an economy based on agriculture, livestock, dairy and marine resources. “I believe in the propensity of our country to expand to an economy that is beyond US$200 million size, if not in the next 10 years, easily in the next 20 years we could get there,” he said. “That is simply because of the resource density we have in our country.” PM Marape said while the country was going through time times, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”. “Those who will be on the mainstream are those who want to capture opportunities that are available for them,” he said. “I speak to our local SMEs: There are opportunities available.” PM Marape said those in the SME space should be encouraged that “our Government is pro-business, pro SME”. “We want to help Papua New Guineans and those that are resident in Papua New Guinea to get going in business,” he said. “We embrace businesses of all types because we are cognisant of the fact that success of business allows the economy of a country to be strong.”
