ST PETER'S PARISH COMMEMORATES FEAST DAY FOR BLESSED PETER TOROT

Catholics around Papua New Guinea today commemorated and celebrated the feast day of Blessed Peter Torot who was the first Papua New Guinean to be beautified as a Martyr for PNG on the 17th January 1995 by Late Pope John Paul the 2nd. At the St Peter's Chanel Catholic Church in Erima, Port Moresby, the feast day was celebrated with a Eucharistic Service Mass facilitated by Father Michael who was the main celebrant and the choir led by the Parish Youth's and the NGI Choir Group. During the Homily, Father Michael highlighted that Blessed Peter Torot had a very strong faith in the Lord and his courage to go about in spreading the gospel across the village and nearby places was well recognized. "It was his courage and faith that enabled him to be identified and proclaimed a Martyr for PNG,” said Father Michael. The feast day was celebrated with dance processions from the Parish's different Basic Christian Community groups throughout the important parts of the mass. Towards the end of the Eucharistic Service, the congregation came together to sing Blessed Peter Torot's theme song. Blessed Peter Torot, from Rakunai in Rabaul, East New Britain province was born on the 5th of March 1912. He served as a well-noted and beloved Christian and Catechist in his village Rakunai and was entrusted with the local parish during World War 2 when the Japanese occupied the region. He stood up for religious values in the face of the Japanese oppression and continued to hold secret services when the Japanese restricted him from active pastoral services. In the year 1945 at the age of 33, Blessed Peter Torot was given a lethal injection by the Japanese in an attempt to end his life however the poison in the injection was very slow and weak to respond. He was then tragically struck from the back of his neck with a Beal that eventually killed him. Every year during his feast day, Catholic communities across PNG, celebrate with song and dance as well as the sharing of food to remember the courageous work that Blessed Peter Torot had done throughout his life.

JULY 12: KANGAROOS THUMP THE BRITS; FRIEND GOES GLOBAL

On this day, two Hall of Famers were born, Nathan Friend set up one of the most spectacular tries of all time and Great Britain suffered a massive defeat at the hands of the Kangaroos. 1902 Hall of Fame forward Vic Armbruster was born near Ballina on the NSW North Coast. Armbruster was one of the best of the many NSW players to head to Queensland in the 1920s. He was 20 when he won selection for NSW in the only interstate clash of 1922. A tall second-rower, Armbruster settled in Toowoomba in 1924, and made an immediate impact on his new club Valleys, where he teamed with future Test stars Herb Steinohrt and Dan Dempsey. A noted ball handler with the ability to slip a pass when surrounded by defenders and a player renowned for ''dropping back to take the high punts'', Armbruster's international career began in the second Ashes Test of 1924. He played all three Tests against England in 1928 and was one of the first forwards chosen for the 1929–30 Kangaroo tour. Armbruster returned to England in 1931, playing with fellow Australians Cec Aynsley and Bill Spencer at the Rochdale Hornets club, his career winding down in 1935. He coincidentally bears a striking resemblance to another great Queenslander, Billy Slater.[/caption] 1942 Hall of Fame halfback Billy Smith was born in Fremantle. Smith is remembered as one of the great halfbacks, but his initial impact in the St George team of the 1960s was as a centre, partnering the great Reg Gasnier in grand final victories in 1963, 1964 and 1965. Sandwiched between those premiership victories, in 1964 Smith was named as the NSW halfback for the games against Queensland and then as Australia's half for three Tests against France. This was the beginning of a stellar international career, perhaps the highlight being his feat of winning the Harry Sunderland Medal as the best Australian player in a home Test series in 1966 against Great Britain and the following year against New Zealand. Smith played in five of the six Tests on the 1967–68 Kangaroo tour and was a key member of the Australian team that won the World Cup in 1968 and 1970. He captained his country against Great Britain during the 1970 Cup. Arrow joined the Titans and made his State of Origin debut in the 2018 series and was again called up for the Maroons the following year but his campaign was ended after suffering a leg injury after game one. 2002 Great Britain suffer their greatest humiliation in 95 years of international rugby league when they are trounced 64-10 by Australia at Aussie Stadium. The Australians run in 11 tries to surpass their previous biggest win over the "Old Enemy" – a 50-12 result at Swinton in 1963. PNG RECORDS SIX NEW COVID-19 CASES ON FRIDAY 9 JULY – TOTAL CASES AT 17,340

Papua New Guinea has recorded six new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending 12 midday on Friday July 9, increasing the total number of cases to 17,340. The cases were reported in four provinces: National Capital District reported three cases whilst Jiwaka, Madang and Morobe reported a single case each. Of the six cases reported, four are males whilst two are females. Their ages range from 18 to 55 years. Five out of the six cases were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing. The country’s COVID-19 cases now stands at 17,340 with 179 known deaths. Total cumulative recoveries stands at 16,975. To date, a total of 136,187 people have tested for COVID-19. All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 186,327,100 including 486,163 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll stands at 4,026,536 including 8,938 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. US HEATWAVE: WILDFIRES RAGE IN WESTERN STATES AS TEMPERATURES SOAR

Wildfires are raging in the west of the United States as the region is hit by a heatwave that has brought record temperatures to several areas. Communities have been told to evacuate as firefighters struggle to battle the blazes in the extreme conditions. Two firefighters in Arizona died when their aircraft crashed while responding to a wildfire. Meanwhile, Las Vegas matched its all-time temperature high of 47.2C (117F) on Saturday. Firefighters battling the many wildfires in the region say the air is so dry that much of the water dropped by aircraft to quell the flames evaporates before it reaches the ground. It comes just weeks after another dangerous heatwave hit North America, in which hundreds of sudden deaths were recorded, many of them suspected of being heat-related. The region experienced its hottest June on record, according to the EU's Earth observation programme. Life in the 'hottest place on Earth' Record heat points to 'extraordinary' extremes A really simple guide to climate change Experts say that climate change is expected to increase the frequency of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves. But linking any single event to global warming is complicated. However, a study by climate researchers said the heat that scorched western Canada and the US at the end of June was "virtually impossible" without climate change. Arizona's Bureau of Land Management paid tribute to the two "brave wildland firefighters" who died in a plane crash while performing aerial reconnaissance, command and control over the lightning-caused Cedar Basin Fire. "Our hearts are heavy tonight with sincere condolences to families, loved ones and firefighters affected by this tragic aviation accident", the agency said. The accident occurred at around noon local time (19:00 GMT) on Saturday near the small community of Wikieup. Further information was not immediately available and the firefighters have not been officially named. In the north of Nevada, near the border with California, people were evacuated from their homes as wildfires triggered by lightning strikes tore through parts of the Sierra Nevada forest region. One fire, which more than doubled in size between Friday and Saturday, sent up a giant cloud of smoke and ash which, combined with the dry heat, generated its own lightning, according to the Los Angeles Times. "As long as it's this hot and we have these low humidities, it's kind of hard to tell when and where we're going to catch this," Lisa Cox, information officer for the so-called Beckwourth Complex fires, told the newspaper. In Oregon, a wildfire fanned by strong winds in the Fremont-Winema National Forest doubled in size to 120 sq miles (311 sq km) on Saturday. The fire was threatening power cables that send electricity to California. Power grid operators in California have urged customers to conserve electricity by reducing their use of appliances and to keep thermostats higher during the evening when solar energy is diminished or no longer available. In Idaho, Governor Brad Little declared a wildfire emergency on Friday and mobilised the state's National Guard to help fight fires also sparked by lightning. Fires have also been burning in Canada's western province of British Columbia amid unusually hot, dry weather. An entire village was wiped out in a blaze earlier this month after it recorded Canada's highest ever temperature of 49.6C (121.3F). The country on Sunday ordered new railway safety rules for areas where there is a high wildfire risk. The rules will require Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway to take a number of precautions, including reducing train speeds when there is an extreme fire risk and removing combustible material near tracks. Millions warned about heat Several areas in Nevada and California have matched or passed temperature records, according to preliminary data by the National Weather Service (NWS), and the extreme heat is expected to continue. A temperature of 54.4C (130F) was registered in California's Death Valley on Friday, matching one recorded in August 2020 - which some argue is the highest temperature ever reliably recorded on Earth. A temperature of 56.7C (134F) was registered in the area in 1913, but this is contested by climate experts. Millions of people are under an excessive heat warning, with those affected urged to drink plenty of water and stay in air-conditioned buildings where possible. Cooling centres - air-conditioned public spaces - have been set up in some areas to help residents get relief from the heatwave. WOMAN IN HER 90S DIES IN SYDNEY AFTER CONTRACTING COVID-19 IN FAMILY SETTING

Australia has suffered its first death from Covid-19 for months as NSW sinks deeper into crisis. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed a woman aged in her 90s had died after contracting the virus “within the home setting”, urging residents to adhere to restrictions to avoid endangering their loved ones. “Tragically, we’ve seen one older person die and I want to extend my deepest condolences to their families and loved ones,” she said. “I can’t stress enough that every time we risk breaking the rules, or even just going about our business and not getting tested when we need to, the people whose lives and health that we’re risking the most are those closest to us.” Authorities believe the woman was not vaccinated, but are working to confirm that detail. NSW confirmed another 77 cases on Sunday, 50 close family members of people with the virus. Ms Berejiklian said she would be “shocked” if number of new cases did not exceed 100 on Monday. NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant said the death “highlights the severity and the impact that Covid can have on loved ones, the nearest and dearest to you”. “This highlights the critical point around the importance of not putting yourself or your loved ones or your family and friends at risk,” she said. “Please stay at home, and that means staying within the one household. Do not leave that household setting and do not interact with other family members. “I know that that can be a difficult concept, given the closeness of family units, but at this point in time … we need to keep the households as a discrete unit, so we don’t get that risk of further spread.” Fifty-two people were in hospital with Covid-19 across NSW, 15 in intensive care and five on ventilators. Eleven of the hospitalised patients were under the age of 35 and six were under 25. Dr Chant said the patients in ICU “dispel the myth that (Covid-19) is only for the elderly”, with one in their teens, one in their 20s, and one in their 30s. “This is a serious disease, Covid. We cannot afford to have complacency,” she said. There was one ICU patient in their 40s, three in their 50s, five in their 60s, two in their 70s, and one in their 80s. Dr Chant said she appreciated the strength of family ties in southwestern Sydney, but warned they were proving “so detrimental” to containing the virus. She said many communities in the region conceived of family units as extended families, including aunts, uncles, cousins, and nephews. “That’s wonderful, but in Covid times, those interactions between those family groups are so likely to spread Covid. CALIFORNIA WILDFIRE ADVANCES AS HEAT WAVE BLANKETS WEST

Firefighters struggled to contain an exploding Northern California wildfire under blazing temperatures as another heat wave hits the U.S. West this weekend, prompting an excessive heat warning for inland and desert areas. On Friday, Death Valley National Park in California recorded a staggering high of 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If verified, the 130-degree reading would be the hottest high recorded there since July 1913, when the same Furnace Creek desert area hit 134 degrees, considered the highest reliably measured temperature on Earth. The Beckwourth Complex — a merging of two lightning-caused fires — headed into Saturday showing no sign of slowing its rush northeast from the Sierra Nevada forest region after doubling in size only a few days earlier. Although there are no confirmed reports of building damage, the fire prompted evacuation orders or warnings for roughly 2,800 people in California along with the closure of nearly 200 square miles of Plumas National Forest. On Friday, ridgetop winds up to 20 mph (32 kph) combined with ferocious heat as the fire raged through dry pine, fir and chaparral. As the fire’s northeastern flank raged near the California-Nevada state line, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office asked people to evacuate some areas in the rural communities of Ranch Haven and Flanagan Flats, north of Reno. The evacuation orders were lifted Saturday, but authorities urged residents to be ready to leave if the fire becomes a threat again. Hot rising air formed a gigantic, smoky pyrocumulus cloud that reached thousands of feet high and created its own lightning, fire information officer Lisa Cox said. Spot fires caused by embers leapt up to a mile ahead of the northeastern flank — too far for firefighters to safely battle, and winds funneled the fire up draws and canyons full of dry fuel, where “it can actually pick up speed,” Cox said. Firefighters usually take advantage of cooler, more humid nights to advance on a fire, Cox said, but the daytime conditions persisted. More than 1,200 firefighters were aided by aircraft but the blaze was expected to continue forging ahead because of the heat and low humidity that dried out vegetation. The air was so dry that some of the water dropped by aircraft evaporated before reaching the ground, she added. The blaze, which was only 9% contained, increased dramatically to 86 square miles after fire officials made better observations. It was one of several threatening homes across Western states that are expected to see triple-digit heat through the weekend as a high-pressure zone blankets the region. The National Weather Service warned the dangerous conditions could cause heat-related illnesses, while California’s power grid operator issued a statewide Flex Alert from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday to avoid disruptions and rolling blackouts. The call for voluntary conservation of electricity was extended for a second day, not only because of mounting heat, but because a wildfire in southern Oregon was threatening transmission lines that carry power to California. Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an emergency proclamation on Friday suspending some rules to allow for more power capacity. Pushed by strong winds, the Oregon fire doubled in size to 120 square miles on Saturday as it raced through heavy timber in the Fremont-Winema National Forest near the Klamath County town of Sprague River. In north-central Arizona, Yavapai County on Saturday lifted a pre-evacuation notice for Black Canyon City, an unincorporated town 43 miles north of Phoenix, after a fire in nearby mountains was less active Friday. In Idaho, Gov. Brad Little declared a wildfire emergency Friday and mobilized the state’s National Guard to help fight fires sparked after lightning storms swept across the drought-stricken region. Fire crews in north-central Idaho were facing extreme conditions and gusts as they fought two wildfires covering a combined 19.5 square miles.
