US EMBASSY CELEBRATES MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENTS IN WOMEN EMPOWERMENT US EMBASSY CELEBRATES MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENTS IN WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
The U.S. Embassy in Papua New Guinea recently celebrated achievements in women’s economic empowerment with the graduation of the inaugural Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) cohort in the Hiri-Koiari District, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to expand the program to more communities. The ceremony, held at the American Corner at the National Library and Archives, was attended by U.S. Ambassador Ann Marie Yastishock and Hiri-Koiari MP Keith Iduhu. The MOU formalized a new public-private partnership between the U.S. Embassy, MP Iduhu, and AWE’s implementing partner, Didi Consultant. The agreement creates a sustainable model that can be replicated across other provinces, enabling local-level delivery of AWE programs without direct U.S. government financial funding. The first Hiri-Koiari cohort consisted of 28 women entrepreneurs who completed a six-week in-person training program at the American Corner. Using the AWE DreamBuilder curriculum, developed by Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management, participants received training in financial literacy, compliance, taxation, business planning, entrepreneurial mindset, and professional networking. They now join a broader network of more than 300 AWE alumnae in PNG and 15,000 graduates worldwide. Ambassador Yastishock praised the success of the initiative. “This program was a testament to the power of partnership.” “Through the vision and support of MP Iduhu, the expertise of Didi Consultant, and the dedication of the U.S. Embassy, we have empowered women to become agents of economic growth and positive change in their communities.” The graduation ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for the entrepreneurs, who will continue to develop and grow their businesses. An AWE Fare, scheduled for March 2026, will give graduates the opportunity to showcase their products and services, build networks, and access market opportunities. Launched globally in 2019 by the U.S. Department of State, the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs equips women with the tools, resources, and networks needed to start and scale businesses, strengthening livelihoods and building more inclusive economies.

PNG & AUSTRALIA RELATIONS; A TESTAMENT OF TRUE MATE- SHIP PNG & AUSTRALIA RELATIONS; A TESTAMENT OF TRUE MATE- SHIP
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has hailed the relationship between his country and Papua New Guinea (PNG), describing it as a reflection of true mates, equals and allies.PM Albanese made this remark during his landmark address at the PNG Investment Week 2025 Leaders’ Summit in Sydney, Australia, when describing Australia’s deep friendship and growing economic partnership with PNG. Speaking before business leaders, government officials and international investors, PM Albanese highlighted the unprecedented closeness between the two national leaders and their governments — noting that no pair of Australian and PNG prime ministers have met more frequently than himself and Prime Minister James Marape.“That represents progress — progress that is in the interests of Australia, but also very much in the interests of Papua New Guinea,” PM Albanese said, extending a warm welcome to delegates from across the Pacific and around the world.PM Albanese unveiled the scale of growing trade ties, pointing to a record $8.1 billion in two-way goods trade in 2024–25. He celebrated the expansion of PNG agricultural exports— including coffee, cocoa and vanilla — backed by strengthened biosecurity and infrastructure links. He also emphasized that the new security alliance — only Australia’s third in history — recognizes that Pacific security must be led from within the Pacific family. “Australian markets are hungry for PNG’s exceptional produce,” he noted. Key economic initiatives highlighted include:Upgrading 47km of the Wau Highway in Morobe to support rural           commerce Joint redevelopment of the Kokoda Highway to honour shared history            while unlocking new economic routes More than $600 million to upgrade five major ports across PNG,            improving sea trade for a nation of 600 islands Continued investment in climate-resilient infrastructure and agriculture.“These projects ensure the benefits of development flow straight back into PNG, strengthening its status as an essential economic partner in the Pacific,” PM Albanese said. The Australian leader also praised initiatives building PNG’s skills, education pathways, health services, digital infrastructure and renewable energy systems, calling human capital “PNG’s greatest resource”.He also celebrated the progress toward a PNG NRL franchise — the PNG Chiefs — saying elite sports investment would unlock massive benefits in tourism, infrastructure and youth development.“When young Papua New Guineans see a pathway into the NRL — they are encouraged to stay in school, to train, to pursue big dreams,” he said.PM Albanese then welcomed the announcement that direct Qantas flights between Sydney and Port Moresby will resume in March 2026, boosting tourism, business travel and family connections.“At the end of the day, business-to-business relations are important, government to-government relations are important — but nothing beats people-to-people,” he said.

VILLAGE FARMERS PREP FOR COCOA BUDWOOD TECHNICAL VISIT VILLAGE FARMERS PREP FOR COCOA BUDWOOD TECHNICAL VISIT
Farmers in Ragiampun Village, Ward 13, Umi Local Level Government (LLG) in the Markham District of Morobe province, are preparing their cocoa budwood garden ahead of a planned technical visit by the Unitech SPISARD team and DFAT’s APEP program.Although the exact visit date is yet to be confirmed, community members have mobilized this week to weed and clear the garden, ensuring young cocoa clone trees grow strong and healthy. Joe Mamu, Community Leader of Ragiampun Village, said the preparation is vital for the trees to thrive. “Our job now is to remove the weeds so the cocoa trees can grow well, get good airflow, and not be damaged by pests,” Mamu said. He added that the community looks forward to sharing their progress and challenges with the visiting teams and receiving technical guidance. “We want to show the good work we’re doing, share our difficulties, and hear ideas that will help this project grow even bigger,” he said. Ragiampun village is one of several sites selected under Umi LLG for cocoa development. The community previously partnered with FPDA on bulb onion farming before receiving cocoa budwood seedlings to establish the new garden. Mamu highlighted that the project has fostered strong community collaboration. “This is a community garden, and everyone is working together. We agreed on workdays to clean and maintain the cocoa so it grows well,” he said. He also noted ongoing challenges, including water shortages during dry seasons, limited chemicals for pest and weed control, and the need for shade plants and support stakes. “Even with these challenges, we continue to stand strong and keep working,” Mamu said. Since October, farmers have planted 40 cocoa trees and are awaiting an additional 120 seedlings from Unitech to expand the garden. Their long-term plan is to establish a major cocoa budwood nursery in Ragiampun to supply planting materials across Umi LLG. Mamu said the upcoming technical visit will provide valuable skills for the community. “When experts train us, we can pass that knowledge to other villages. Our cocoa quality will improve, and families will earn more income,” he said. He thanked Unitech SPISARD and DFAT APEP for their continued support. “We are grateful for the seedlings and the knowledge they will bring. Their support helps us build a stronger future for agriculture in our community,” Mamu said.

The St. Monfort Kiunga Teachers College (SMKTC) officially opened its doors on December 4th, 2025, with the installation of its management team and the announcement of its 2026 academic program. The college, located behind St. Gabriel’s Technical Secondary School in Kiunga, Western province will be operated by the St. Gabriel Brothers under the Catholic Diocese of Daru-Kiunga. Brother Lucianus Lakra was appointed as Principal, and Brother Benny Luis as Assistant Principal. The college has received approval from the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science & Technology (DHERST) to begin its academic program in 2026. College Project Manager, Mr. Kevin Joseph acknowledged the efforts of North Fly MP James Donald, the North Fly District Administration, the Fly River Provincial Government led by Governor Taboi Awi Yoto, Provincial Administrator Robert Alphones Kaiyun, and other government divisions. He also thanked the Catholic Diocese of Daru-Kiunga under Reverend Bishop Joseph Durero SVD and the missionaries for their support. Mr. Joseph shared that the Montfort Missionaries had long intended on establishing such an institution in Western Province. The idea gained momentum during the severe teacher shortages of 2015–2016, when many school leavers had to study outside the province. Following MP Donald’s election in 2017, discussions were initiated, and the project was formally announced, followed by the ground-breaking ceremony in 2020. He thanked the NFDDA for driving the project forward and highlighted the milestone achievement of opening five new buildings. He said the event marked the setting up of administrative staff, the opening of new facilities, and the beginning of preparations for the 2026 program. “As work kicks off, the inspection team will visit the college to assess whether it meets national standards. We need to tick off certain checklist items before the college can be fully registered.” Initially, 40 students will be enrolled in the first intake, with applications open to Grade 12 school leavers and FODE upgraders who have a GPA between 2.0 and 2.8. During the opening ceremony, several new facilities were blessed, including a lecture building, administration block, and staff accommodation. The development has been praised by North Fly MP James Donald, who announced that PNG Sustainable Development Program (SDP) will fund the construction of 12 new staff houses for the college. MP Donald also outlined plans to eventually upgrade the institution to a full institute, with hopes to expand its offerings in the future. While the first intake will consist of day students, the college expects to have full boarding facilities by 2027.

LELANG CLEARS AIR ON ALLEGATIONS MADE AGAINST HIM LELANG CLEARS AIR ON ALLEGATIONS MADE AGAINST HIM
The Minister for Rural and Economic Development and Member for Kandrian Gloucester District, Joseph Lelang, has come out to publicly condemned misleading claims circulating in the media and on social media about him, calling them completely false and politically motivated. The allegations, made by a man named John Sanga Mondo, merely suggest that Minister Lelang and the Kandrian Gloucester District Development Authority (DDA) have neglected the Silovuti Junction to Wara Wia road. The Minister firmly rejected these claims, describing them as deliberate attempts to mislead the people of Kandrian Gloucester. “I will not allow baseless accusations to tarnish the truth or undermine established government processes,” Minister Lelang said. He made it clear that the Kandrian DDA approved the Silovuti Junction to Wia River to Kandrian Station road project on 7 November 2022. The project received National Government approval for K50 million, with K10 million to be released annually under the Public Investment Program. Since this is an existing logging road, the funds are administered through the West New Britain Provincial Government, which issued contracts and engages logging companies operating in the area to maintain the roads. “This project is under active contract with the Provincial Government. The contractor’s equipment is on site, their teams are working, and legally, I have no authority to intervene. Anyone making claims otherwise is either ignorant of government procedure or deliberately misleading the public,” Minister Lelang said. He called on Mr. Mondo to direct his questions to the West New Britain Provincial Government rather than making “reckless statements that mislead the public and attempt to score political points.” Minister Lelang also reminded the public that Mr. John Sanga Mondo is a former candidate for the West New Britain Regional seat, who lost in the 2022 national elections, questioning his motives in making statements on district development, especially with the next National General Elections coming up in less than 12 months. Minister Lelang highlighted his ongoing commitment to infrastructure development, pointing to significant allocations already in motion, including K2.3 million for Phase One of the Gloucester Ring road, K500,000 for Aingon inland road maintenance in Gasmata LLG, and K3 million for a maintenance program from Senemsi LLG Chamber to Kandrian Station road.Following Prime Minister James Marape’s visit to Gasmata in February 2025, the DDA has also completed feasibility studies and submitted a K400million proposal for a major new highway linking Gloucester, Kandrian, Gasmata, and onward to Kimbe, the largest infrastructure investment in the district’s history. Minister Lelang condemned Mr. Mondo’s statements as “irresponsible, misleading, and politically driven,” emphasizing that such actions amount to online harassment. “This crosses into cyberbullying and defamation and I will be referring this matter to the appropriate authorities for proper actions,” he said. He also urged the West New Britain Provincial Government to “step forward and provide transparency on the Silovuti to Wara Wia road contract” so the public can see who is responsible and how progress is being made. “The people of Kandrian Gloucester deserve facts, not political lies,” Minister Lelang concluded.
