Lifetime’s third movie about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry has a new trailer. On Friday, the network released a sneak peek of "Harry and Meghan: Escaping the Palace," which is premiering on September 6 – Labor Day – in the United States. The latest installment depicts Markle (Sydney Morton) and Harry (Jordan Dean) at a crisis point with the rest of the British royal family. It even shows a palace aide advising Prince William (Jordan Whalen) and Kate Middleton (Laura Mitchell) to "let it be known who the real royals are." In a separate clip, Harry vows, "I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum," as bulbs from paparazzi cameras flash around a car crash, referencing Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997 at age 36. On June 4, the couple welcomed their second child, a daughter named Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. The child is eighth in line to the British throne. ROOT OF TEEN EMPATHY BEGINS WITH SECURE RELATIONSHIPS AT HOME, STUDY FINDS

Teenagers who have close, secure relationships with their families are more likely to extend empathy to their peers, according to a new study. More specifically, when teens feel safe, supported by and connected to parents or other adult caregivers, they are better equipped to pass the empathy they receive on to others. "I don't think teens in particular like being told what to do, and I don't think it's going to work to tell teens they should empathize with other people," said Jessica Stern, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral fellow in the department of psychology at the University of Virginia. "But what does work is showing them empathy, and they can pay it forward to the people in their lives." Stern's work revolves around how having secure relationships contributes to prosocial behavior, or behavior driven by the intent to benefit others. She studies parent-child relationships, also known as attachment theory, which is "the idea that all human beings have a fundamental need for connection, but we kind of vary in the ways that we make those connections," she said. "Those differences in the quality of our relationships kind of shape who we become over time." Teens who are more empathic show lower levels of aggression and prejudice and are less likely to bully, Stern added, and this is why understanding how relationships shape empathy is important. The study, conducted at the University of Virginia's Adolescent Research Group, followed 174 adolescents from the ages of 14 to 18 to track their progress annually. At age 14, researchers interviewed the teens regarding their family relationships using a modified version of the Adult Attachment Interview, which is considered the "gold standard" of assessing one's attachment state of mind, according to the study. Stern said this prompted the teens to share descriptions and stories about their families. Researchers paid attention not only to what the teens said, but also how they articulated it. "Some of those stories have a lot of pain, some of them have a lot of real beauty and closeness, but we're really looking for how teens tell their stories," Stern said. "So, can teens talk about their close relationships in a way that's calm and clear? Can they take a situation that's maybe difficult and make sense out of it?" After these initial interviews, researchers went back to the participants at ages 16, 17 and 18 and observed their interactions with a close friend. The researchers noted how the participants responded when their friend presented a problem and confided in them, assessing the participants' extension of empathy. Teens who had more secure family relationships showed higher empathy toward their friends at ages 16 and 17 than less secure teens. It's not all bad news, though, because the less secure teens "caught up" in their empathic behavior by age 18, to Stern's surprise. This is cause for hope, she said, because it may indicate that those empathic skills can develop over time for adolescents who don't have great relationships at home. Stern suggested that having strong friendships or a trusted teacher might make an impact on insecure teens' empathy, but she said further research should be done to learn more. The results are consistent with considerable past research connecting positive relationships with the development of empathy in adolescence, said Mary Buckingham, a research assistant professor in the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University. She was not involved in the study. "Relationships with important adults matter for empathy development," Buckingham said. "The results suggest that, in order to raise an empathic adolescent, parents need to model and encourage empathy." She said that, as stated in the study, the research shows a correlation between secure relationships and empathy, but it should not be interpreted as a causal relationship at this time. Additional research must examine not only the quality of the attachment relationship between a parent and child, but also the potential impacts of socialization and other aspects of parenting, Buckingham added. Since the research focused on averages across the study sample, she also said an examination of individual differences between participants is necessary. "The article does not illuminate the individual differences that might exist within adolescents, and the specificity of each adolescent's development that might be occurring," Buckingham said. "Future research should examine what specific experiences, for what youth, in what broader contexts, at what points in the life span, may lead to attachment and empathy links." More research is already being conducted on this particular group of participants, who are now in their mid 30s, Stern said. Led by Joseph Allen, professor of psychology and head of the Adolescent Research Group at the University of Virginia, the researchers are interested in seeing how the empathic abilities they examined in the teens now shape their romantic relationships and parenting behavior as adults. "It's important to be able to sort of see from other people's perspectives and to understand what others are feeling for a variety of other things that we consider success in the world," Stern said. For parents and even teachers, Stern advises understanding the necessity of empathy and really investing in relationships with teens. Providing models of empathic behavior, including treating others with kindness, respect and support, can help adolescents internalize that behavior, whether they are conscious of this or not. Adults should also encourage teens to invest in their relationships with their friends, which the study found helps build empathy as a skill as well, Stern said. However, she added, whom teenagers decide to befriend does matter. "We all have different types of families and we can't choose our family, but we can choose our friends," Stern said. "Choose your friends wisely and choose the people who make you feel secure, supported and connected and who have your back, and do that for them, too, because it actually really matters." GOVT ANNOUNCES MONTHLY $20 DATA TOP-UP FOR DOMESTIC UNIVERSITY STUDENTS & YEAR 13 STUDENTS

The government has announced that it will provide a monthly data top-up of $20 per month to domestic university students and Year 13 students to assist them in their online studies. It will partner with Amalgamated Telecom Holdings for this initiative. Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says due to the pandemic, the 25,983 domestic students across three universities in Fiji are currently attending classes and having examinations on online platforms. He says there are also over 8,000 Year 13 students that need access to data to undertake research for their studies. Sayed-Khaiyum says the data provided to students will only be available during the semester and school-term periods but the data can be used however students like. He says they prefer that students don’t waste it all watching dance videos on TikTok. The Government will contribute $100,000 with the rest provided by ATH. SOURCE: Fiji Village

FIJI GOVT UNVEILS $US1.78 BILLION COVID-19 BUDGET

Fiji's National Budget worth $US1.78 billion announced on Friday night is designed with three objectives, all of it linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. Aimed at protecting Fijians from the coronavirus, supporting individuals and businesses and 'future proofing Fiji,' the government relies on loans to make up almost 45 percent of the funds it needs to run the country into 2022. In his address to Parliament, Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said the aim is to protect Fijians from the escalating Covid-19 crisis. His comments come amid record daily case numbers and deaths reported by the health ministry - over 11,000 positive people are in isolation with more than 80 deaths confirmed in this latest outbreak that began in April. Sayed-Khaiyum said there was nothing ordinary about this Budget. "There is nothing ordinary about our lives at this moment. Never has a person's well being and the health of our economy be more intertwined. And so this will not be an ordinary budget," he said. "We are still deep in the world's worst economic crisis in a century. This pandemic has stolen jobs and precious life. It has kept families apart, in times of celebration and sadness. "It has crippled industries built through strong vision and years of steady investment. The arrival of the more virulent variants has sent its devastating toll to painful, new heights." Funded by government revenue of $US1 billion of which about $US220 million is expected to come from direct taxes. Sayed-Khaiyum said indirect taxes should bring in another $US530 million, the deficit of $US770 million from local and overseas loans. The government's vaccination rollout campaign took centre stage as it built incentives for Fijians to get immunized through various measures to achieve a goal of immunising 80 percent of the 587,651 adults in the country by 31 October. Asserting the safety of vaccines, Sayed-Khaiyum said they were key to reopening Fiji's economy at full capacity. He said the government would hasten its goal of vaccinating every eligible Fijian because it "is the most essential element to protecting ourselves and pave the way to a sustainable and Covid-safe economy, and way of life." "The government will not sit idly by and wait for fate to control our destiny. We have a vision through decisive action and leadership. We will see that vision come true, come what may." "We expect to have at least 80 percent of the 587,651 Fijians who make up our target population fully vaccinated by 31 October this year. In other words, 470,121 adults. But Shadow Minister for the Economy and leader of the opposition National Federation Party, Biman Prasad, does not believe that the government can realise its revenue plans. "There are lots of promises of 'we will pay for this, and we will pay for that' but just like in the past, the reality of the matter is that these schemes never work. "It's a budget based on assumptions that will, like other budgets, result in hopelessness and despair." Professor Prasad called it a 'bogus budget' that was overly optimistic, but which avoided acknowledging the reality of the Covid crisis in the country. He said government reliance on its ability to collect $US1bn in revenue was worrying and "it did not take into account the exponential rise in Covid cases. "In short, it is a really good budget because the minister and his government realised that people are angry and anxious. People know that this government has failed in dealing effectively with the Covid crisis. "He is also signalling deep cuts to government spending if we don't get there, and telling us 'It will be people's fault', Professor Prasad said. Meanwhile, the Health Ministry announced on Friday that 391,363 (66.7 percent) of the target population of about 600,000 have received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. It also said 77,610 Fijians (13.2 percent) have got both jabs. Fiji's Covid-19 test positivity is 19.2 percent, almost four times more than the World Health Organisation (WHO) threshold which is five percent. HUNTERS SURGE HOME TO TOPPLE PRIDE

SP PNG Hunters switched on the highlight reel as they returned to winning form with a stirring 34-22 victory over Northern Pride in Atherton tonight. Solo Wane scored three tries, including one before halftime that will take some beating as the best try in this weekend’s Intrust Super Cup Country Week round of matches. But his 61st minute try was vital – a scorching run down the right-hand touchline that enabled the Pride to break a 16-all deadlock. Charlie Simon crossed from a kick nine minutes later to spark scenes reminiscent of rugby league in PNG. The loud Hunters fans in the crowd near the dead-ball line celebrated with the team, waving flags and lapping up a treasured victory. Junior Rau finished the match in style when he sprinted down the left-hand touchline to score in the final minute. This was a well-deserved win for a Hunters team that has battled challenges all season. They finished with only one bench player tonight as skipper Ila Alu (HIA), Samuel Yegip (ankle) and Dilbert Isaac (finger) received knocks. But the win was completed in style against a Pride team playing before its wider home fans with a finals place on the line. “I’m ecstatic for the boys because they have fought really hard for this,” coach Matt Church said. “They have had this performance in them for a while and tonight they made some great decisions on the field and the results showed. “We had great support from the community tonight. It felt a bit like home for some of the boys with the support.” The Hunters had to claw their way back after the Pride scored in the 10th and 16th minutes to take an 8-0 lead. But errant goal-kicking hurt the Pride, which converted only one of its five tries. The Pride kept fighting but the Hunters answered each of their replies in the second half. In contrast, the Hunters kicked five of their six conversions helping them to a 12-8 halftime lead. Country Week matches are spread across Queensland and include official engagements for the teams including interaction with junior teams. The Hunters visited Atherton’s junior games this morning to mix with the locals and Church said that helped them get into the festive mood of tonight’s match. “This is a good experience for our players and it was a chance to get away from Runaway Bay where we’ve spent most of the year,” Church said. “It was still a challenge to come here against a team like the Pride who have played some excellent football this year. But our guys embraced the opportunity and made the most of it.” Brandon Nima opened the scoring for the Hunters with a try in the 25th minute that helped to lay the foundation for a memorable night for the Hunters. The Hunters host Mackay Cutters next weekend while the Pride travels to Brisbane to meet Wynnum-Manly.
