Trans Pacific Assurance has donated a total of K58,468.84 of in-kind sponsorship towards the Port Moresby Nature Park, further enhancing their Gold Sponsorship to the Park. Upon making the donation on Friday last week, Trans Pacific Assurance CEO, Mr. Philip Tolley said the company supports the mission of the Port Moresby Nature Park, therefore are happy to always lend a hand in supporting its operations. “We genuinely feel that the Nature Park is an icon here in Port Moresby, and emphasize the difficulties that they are encountering due to the Covid-19 pandemic. NCDC-TAUBMANS PARTNERSHIP TO IMPROVE CITY’S IMAGE AND FIGHT GRAFFITI CONTINUES

The anti-graffiti and city-transformation partnership between NCDC and Taubmans Paint has been reinforced with additional donations of T-shirts, paints, sun glasses and face masks. PNG’s leading paint company, Taubmans made donations yesterday (Monday) in Port Moresby to NCDC’s Community and Social Services Department. The donation is part of the company’s ongoing community engagement programs. The company’s country head, Ravendren Kanniah said the donation to NCDC was to assist the Commission with their community engagement programs in and around the city. “Over the years, we have been supporting communities, church groups and youths in their community activities. We are happy to work with NCDC to give our support in our capacity for the good of our city,” Kanniah said. His colleague, Tracy Konj said the donation was part of their ‘Umi Kalarim PNG’ theme. “We have been supporting communities, church groups and youths around the city with paints to colour up and beautify public areas in and around the city,” said Konj. NCDC’s Community and Social Services Director, Janet Haua thanked Taubmans for their continuous support in beautifying the city. “We will distribute these items to our local artists to colour up the Remembrance Park down at Koki,” said Haua. NCDC Events Manager, Claudia Towak said with the Remembrance day coming up this Friday, it was only fitting that this donation will help NCDC to colour up the park and have it ready for the event. “This is a national event and we thank Taubmans for their support not only to NCDC but their continuous support to communities in the city and around the nation,” said Towak.

FRIDAY 23rd PUBLIC HOLIDAY – REMEMBERANCE DAY

The Department of Personnel Management has issued a circular instruction informing Public Servants throughout the country that this Friday will be observed as a public holiday. Secretary of Department of Personnel Management Ms Taies Sansan in circular instruction 18 of 2021 advised that Friday 23rd of July is declared as National Remembrance Day. “National Executive Council confirmed in its decision no.261 of 2020 and Department of Personnel Management confirmed this in its circular instruction no.28 of 2020 on Public holidays for 2021”. All public servants are required to resume normal duties commencing 7.45 on Monday 26th July 2021. Ms Sanan wished all public servants a safe and enjoyable Remembrance Day.

ENB BENEFITS FROM 4 MILLION KINA FUNDING FOR RURAL SERVICE DELIVERY PROJECT

Communities in East New Britain are set to benefit from a 4million kina development grant made available provincial ward planning process through a Rural Service Delivery Project. This is an initiative of the Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Agency (DPLLG) delivered through a world bank credit facility and with the support of Australia Papua New Guinea partnership. Up to 37 successful wards and women groups in four local level government wards are recipients of this development assistance aimed at improving community life. [caption id="attachment_12524" align="aligncenter" width="912"] Acting DPLGA Sec Joe Warus and ENB Prov Administrator Wilson Matava after signing of the document[/caption] In a small yet significant ceremony, Raluana in Kokopo District, Toma-Vunadidir in Gazzelle and Balanamataman LLG in Rabaul District signed the grant agreement between the implementing agency, Department of Provincial and Local Level Government, East New Britain Provincial administrator, and representatives of three local level governments and five women groups. While West Pomio Mamusi LLG signing will take place later. Five Women’s groups are amongst the beneficiaries and will receive grant funding between K70,000 and K140,000 while the thirty-two wards will be receiving between K80,000 and K110,000 for community projects such as classrooms, resources centres, water and sanitation and other community projects. Provincial administrator Wilson Matava said the signing is a result of the commitment and engagement set up by leaders of the province. “There are a lot of programs coming from the national government through different agencies and departments, and we are thankful to previous administrations and political leaders for their oversight in doing this groundwork,” said Mr Matava He said the provincial government will continue to embrace the reforms to enhances service delivery to the people through partnerships with development partners and key government institutions. Acting Secretary of Department of Provincial and Local level government Joe Warus reaffirmed the importance of collaborating with stakeholders to improve lives of Papua New Guineans in rural often remote communities. ‘’East New Britain has met funding requirement commitment. Today is an important occasion in witnessing the signing of ward agreement for 37 grants. This paves way for forward development in our wards. We must be happy that the projects are of not the districts or LLGs but right down to the wards. We need to help ourselves start at the ward level first and these funding assistances will do just that.’’ This program runs in line with the province’s development plans and the National Government’s focus for a bottom-up planning where communities members had the opportunity to decide and prioritise necessary services and infrastructure and apply for a grant funding.

KIUNGA HOSPITAL RECEIVES LIFESAVING MEDICAL EQUIPMENT FROM MRCMCAH

The Mineral Resources Community Mine Continuation Agreement Holdings (MRCMCAH) Limited, last Friday donated lifesaving medical equipment comprising of an aspirator (suction machine) and two oxygen concentrators to the Kiunga Hospital. MRCMCAH is the landowner trust company, which owns 12 percent of the OK Tedi Mine shares on behalf of the 152 villages from the eight CMCA regions of Western Province. The equipment valued at K20, 000 was donated by James Assan, Chairman of MRCMCAH and witnessed by representatives from MRCMCAH, MRDC and the hospital. Health Manager for the North Fly District, Rody Ukin, who received the donation on behalf of the hospital, thanked Mr Assan and MRDC for delivering the “much needed equipment” and explained that the hospital has been without these equipment for a while and “the donation was timely and will be used immediately to treat patients.” “The oxygen concentrators will assist our asthmatic patients while the aspirator will be used in our operating theatre,” said Mr Ukin. “Aspirators and oxygen concentrators are basic but vital, life-saving equipment that all our hospitals regardless of their location in the country should have and I’m happy to be able to support our Kiunga hospital,” said Mr Assan. “Kiunga Hospital serves majority of the population of Western Province including my people along the eight CMCA regions - they travel into Kiunga to access health care and treatment at the hospital and this donation, though small, will go a long way in saving lives,” added Mr Assan. The equipment was purchased from India last year by Chairman Assan using his Public Relations Funds but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the equipment only arrived mid this year. Public Relations Funds are funds approved and allocated to each director of the MRCMCAH trustee company to use as response to community expectations and these funds are tied to community-supported initiatives such as health, education, law and order, sports among others. MRCMCAH is the landowner trust company, which owns 12 percent of the OK Tedi Mine shares on behalf of the 152 villages from the eight CMCA regions of Western Province. These regions are North Fly, Middle Fly, Kiwaba, Highway, North Ok Tedi, Suki Fly Gogo, Manawete and Dudi Region. MRCMCAH is managed by MRDC through a management agreement.

FIRST ATHLETE ARRIVES AT OLYMPIC VILLAGE

Team PNG’s first athlete, boxer John Ume, has arrived at the Tokyo Olympics. He touched down in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday (18th July) led by Chef de Mission Tamzin Wardley and her management team along with his coach Mark Keto. Ume will become the 14th Boxer to represent Team PNG and will become Olympian number 65 when he competes on 25 July in the Lightweight division (57-63kg) at the Kokugikan Arena. Team PNG will be participating at their eleventh Olympic Games after their first appearance back at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games and will be represented by eight athletes from five sports. Team PNG has eight athletes and eleven officials attending the Tokyo Olympic Games. Weightlifters Dika Toua (Women’s 49kg) and Morea Baru (Men’s 61kg) and their coach Willie Tamasi and Sailors, Teariki Numa (Men’s Laser) and Rose-Lee Numa (Women’s Laser Radial) with their coach Danny Fuller. Sailors are due into the Olympic Village on Wednesday 21 July with Dika and Morea arriving on 23 July. Swimmers Ryan Maskelyne (Men’s 200m Breaststroke) and Judith Meauri (Women’s 50m Freestyle) willarrive into Tokyo on Friday 23 July from Australia and Thailand respectively. Their coach Shaun Crow and team manager Sarenah Pini will also join them. The last athlete to join Team PNG will be Rellie Kaputin (Women’s Long Jump) who will arrive into Tokyo on Wednesday 28 July with her coach Phillip Newton. She will be the last athlete to compete for Team PNG. Team PNG Chef de Mission Tamzin Wardley was excited to finally make it to Tokyo. “We’re glad to be here in Tokyo and looking forward to see our athletes in action. It has been a really long journey for our athletes and coaches and we’re happy to finally settle in here in the Olympic Village and I look forward to the rest of the team joining us this week” Rest of Team PNG includes Asiani Vagi as admin personnel and Chris Amini as admin personnel and high performance analyst with Dr Kapua Kapua as the Chief Medical Officer and Matthew Natusch as the Team Physiotherapist. UN WOMEN AND THE DEPARTMENT FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND RELIGION CO-HOST WORKSHOP ON ADVOCACY AND COALITION-BUILDING FOR WOMEN LEADERS

On Thursday 15 July, UN Women and the Department for Community Development and Religion concluded a three-day workshop in Lae on advocacy and coalition-building for women leaders from across the Momase Region. The workshop was the third in a series of four workshops held in each region across the country over the past few months. The workshops aim to provide an opportunity for women leaders from across each region to come together to learn more about the principles and benefits of coalition-building to support collective action. [caption id="attachment_12511" align="aligncenter" width="863"] Workshop participants present their resolution and recommendations on reserved seats for women to the Department for Community Development and Religion and Office for the Development of Women.[/caption] Workshop participant Carol Mayo from West Sepik shared her reflections on the three days, “It brought unity to the women, I can see the cooperation and we learned so much…We built relationships with other women who want to contest.” During the workshop, women leaders had an opportunity to hear from researchers, public servants and politicians who have played a role in trying to pass legislation to increase women’s representation in the National Parliament over the past few decades. “I am supportive of the five reserved seats for women, though many of us will also contest the open and provincial seats,” said Finkewe Zurecnuoc, a participant from Morobe. “The workshop provided an excellent platform that we, Momase women, will embrace. This will help us go a long way and I am sure this will facilitate more women into Parliament. I’m very happy to be part of the Momase women’s coalition.” The efforts of government institutions such as the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission (IPPCC), Constitutional Law and Reform Commission (CLRC) and National Research Institute (NRI) have been essential in providing technical expertise and proposing models for Temporary Special Measures (TSMs), including reserved seats for women and quotas for women in political parties. However, this work must be coupled with grassroots advocacy led by women leaders and women’s organisations, in partnership with male champions. “The workshop was very empowering, it got us some way forward and shared some of the measures we can take to help women from our respective provinces,” said Veronica Simogun from East Sepik. “I’m going to get back and round up the people I’m working with to share how to network and empower women, finding a way forward for Momase people.” UN Women are proud to work with the Department for Community Development and Religion to support women leaders from across the country to advance women’s political participation.

HUNTERS LOSE SKIPPER BUT GAIN CONFIDENCE FOR CUTTERS CLASH

The SP PNG Hunters will take a much-needed shot of confidence from last weekend’s Intrust Super Cup Country Week victory over Northern Pride into Saturday’s home clash with Mackay Cutters, despite the loss of skipper Ila Alu with injury. The Hunters scored some spectacular long-range tries in their 34-22 win in Atherton and coach Matt Church says the way his side was more selective in creating backline opportunities provided a lesson to replicate as the Hunters chase successive victories. The backs scored six tries against the Pride, three to winger Solo Wane, while all of the back five – fullback Terry Wapi (183m), wingers Wane (225m) and Junior Rau (226m) and centres Brandon Nima (116m) and Brendon Gutono (115m) – ran for over 100 metres each. “It was a great example of when to run the ball and back their skill and pace because we certainly have to ability to score points,” Church said. “The challenge now is to do that consistently. “Stanton Albert (157 running metres) and Enock Maki (114m) set the platform for the forwards and our bench provided probably their best impact on the game this season. They really came in and lifted the intensity. “Now comes the chance to put that in the bank and do it again after a weekend away and victory has given us a spring in our step.” Lock Alu suffered a head knock and will have a week’s rest under HIA protocols. Five-eighth Ase Boas will captain the Hunters in his absence. Dilbert Isaac, the 28-year-old prop in his third Intrust Super Cup season, comes into the starting line-up for his skipper. Jordan Pat, who was a late addition to the squad at their Runaway Bay camp a month ago, makes his first appearance for the season after playing well in the Gold Coast A-grade competition. Middle forward Pat played four games for the Hunters in 2019. Second-rower Keven Appo will be given another week to overcome his ankle injury while second-rower Sylvester Namo has recovered from a sprained wrist and will start from the interchange bench in place of Samuel Yegip (ankle injury).In Round 3, the Hunters beat the Cutters 26-14 in Mackay. The Cutters have won two games this season. Mackay will be without North Queensland Cowboys’ emerging NRL players Daejarn Asi, Michael Bell and Ben Condon who have to remain in the NRL bubble while Tongan halfback Ata Hingano signed with English Super League club Salford last month. This match was scheduled to be played three weeks ago but a Covid lockdown in parts of Queensland prevented the match from going ahead. The Queensland Rugby League moved the round to this weekend, which had been scheduled for a bye. There are six rounds remaining before the Intrust Super Cup finals. SIASSI COUNCILLORS VISIT KAIRUKU-HIRI ELECTORATE

A delegation from the Tewai-Siassi District of Morobe Province visited the Kairuku and Hiri District headquarters in Central province this week to learn about the dual administrative systems of the electorate. Seven ward councillors from Siassi LLG are part of this delegation headed by Tewai-Siassi MP Dr Kobby Bomareo and officials from its three LLGs, district administration and senior officials from the Morobe Provincial Administration. “This is a fact finding mission to learn about the systems of administration and governance structures and challenges of the two respective administrations under the Kairuku-Hiri electorate,” says Dr. Kobby Bomareo. The Tewai-Siassi MP says the dual administration system will empower Siassi LLG in seeing efficiency in basic service delivery to the people on the island. “From the findings we can base our assessments and make critical decisions towards establishing Siassi LLG as a subdistrict and adapt dual administration under the Tewai-Siassi electorate,” says Dr Kobby. Dr Kobby also thanked Central Province Governor Robert Agarobe and Central Provincial Deputy Administrator Social Services Peter Simbakua for providing assistance and support during the visit. Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo thanked the delegates for visiting Bereina station and Mirigeda in Gwarumemase village, Central Province to understand the dual administration system. Mr Isoaimo says his electorate is one of the biggest in the country with a population of more than one hundred thousand people and covering a land mass of more than ten thousand square kilometres. “Administratively I have two district administrators or CEOs who financially draw out from one budget allocation of K10million DSIP allocation,” says Isoaimo. The Tewai-Siassi delegates also visited the, Central Provincial Government Headquaters and Vulupindi House and were addressed by the Department of National Planning Secretary Konnie Samuel and Attorney General Dr Eric Kwa. “Your roles at the village and district level is very important in contributing towards the national development goals and visions of this country,” Secretary Samuel told the delegates.

AMBITIOUS GOAL TO MAKE NIP YOUTH MARCHING BAND

In what is being described as a very ambitious yet exciting goal, the New Ireland Provincial Executive Council has approved for the establishment of a Youth Marching Band. Promoting Music and discipline. The band will be trained by former members of Papua New Guinea's Royal Police Constabulary band and a technical team who have backgrounds in teaching music and Marching drills. Consultations are already underway to help organise the formation and setting up of the Marching band. Interested youths who are disciplined, of clean and sober habits can contact, New Ireland Government Public Relations to apply for positions in the 16 member Marching Band. The OLSH Governors school of excellence is also very excited about the prospect and looks forward to assisting. Because they have music lessons already.
