MADANG PAGEANT, A ‘COVID RESTRICTION’ SUCCESS

The annual Mr. & Miss Madang Pageant was a success, which took place under strict COVID-19 protocols said Dr Martin Daimen, the Consultant Physician at Madang’s General Hospital. Dr Daimen said that the event held at the Madang Resort’s Haus Win Restaurant had adhered to all the COVID-19 protocols and was authorized to take place. He was a guest speaker during the event that took place last Saturday the 24th of July. The Mr & Miss Madang pageant had more than 220 people who attended the event, “under strict COVID protocols,” said Sir Peter Barter, Madang’s senior statesman and the Managing Director of the Melanesian Tourist Services Ltd (MTS). [caption id="attachment_12844" align="aligncenter" width="937"] Miss Madang 2021, Naomi Alickson being crowned by the former Miss Madang, Josie Nicholas.[/caption] “With our recent milestone achievement of 98% vaccinated staff, we adhered to every single COVID-19 protocol.” The event had more than 23 tables of 10 people, “all tables had hand sanitizers and all tables also had ample spacing between them,” said Sir Peter. Wesley Hantan, MTS’ Tours & Operations Manager and Leoshina Kariha, the former Miss Madang Resort and Miss Pacific Islands were hosts for the event. Wesley said that the COVID-19 protocols was a regular reminder throughout the event. “We reminded the guests who attended the event to avoid shaking hands, to always wear their face masks when they were moving around the restaurant.” Wesley also commended the effort of the Madang Resort team. “The team from the Haus Win Restaurant and the entire Madang Resort staff have proven to be able to work under pressure and to allow such an event to take place.” “This shows our capability to host any event whilst adhering to the COVID-19 protocols.” The Mr & Miss Madang Pageant is an initiative of the Madang Resort and is facilitated by both the Madang Rotary Club and the resort. The event concluded with the crowning of Naomi Alickson (Miss Divine Word Universtiy), as the Miss Madang for 2021 and Nigel Totona (Mr Country Women’s Association), as the Mr Madang for 2021. The Madang Resort’s contestants, Catherine Lalen (Miss Madang Resort) and Thomas Dedmai (Mr Madang Resort) were both crowned as Mr & Miss Charity for 2021, they were both 1st runner up to potentially being crowned as the Mr & Miss Madang. PNG SAILING SIBLINGS STRUGGLE TO MATCH TOP CLASS SAILORS AT OLYMPICS

The first day of racing at the Tokyo 2020 venue started on Sunday (26 July) and will run right through to 30 July. Enoshima is a small island connected to the city of Fujisawa by a bridge. This was also the sailing venue for the Tokyo Olympics in the 1960’s. The sailors compete in two races each day for 5 days with each race taking up to 50 minutes to be completed. Papua New Guinea’s sailing siblings struggled to match the class of the sailing field during the first three and four heats respectively held at Enoshima over Sunday and Monday. Teariki Numa sailed valiantly over the three races held against a top class field of 35 and brought up the rear of the fleet. Teariki was second to race among the siblings with his first race getting away in a light Southerly breeze. Samoan sailor, Eroni Leilua had a brilliant first leg rounding the top mark in fourth position, amongst the favourites, but fell away to finish back in 31st in the first race and continued his good form in the following races, starting strong but fading towards the back end of each race. Teariki’s sister, Rose-Lee had similar results placing 44th, 42nd, 40th and 44th in the four heats and is currently being pipped by rival, Fijian sailor Sophia Morgan in all heats. Rose-Lee competed first with her first race starting at 12pm in a light North East breeze. The second race was delayed as the wind dropped and shifted to the south. Conditions have been tough out on the water with considerable water chop and consistent strong breezes as a result of the Typhoon Nepartak that is sitting off the Japanese coast. Top positions are being shared across the field in what will become a very close battle for the medals. Coach Danny Fuller was positive with both sailors “Rose-Lee should be proud of both of her starts today (Sunday). This is the most difficult part of sailing and Rose had two strong starts. She also made good decisions to keep her boat in good wind around the course. Rose improved her boat speed in the second race and sailed with the main bunch all the way around the course”. Coach Fuller added that Teariki was a little nervous, and did not get the start he would have liked. “In the 2nd lap he loosened up and made up a lot of ground on his competitors to finish very strongly. The 2nd race of the day was abandoned soon after the start as the wind faded”. The strong conditions during the Men’s race 2, on Monday morning, saw a sea of trouble as the dinghies battled the conditions and were swept into the race marks resulting in numerous penalties. The laser sailing competition is very competitive with the world’s top sailors who are all professional sailors racing for the gold. Coach Danny added, “The goal today was to get a good start and Teariki achieved that with a solid start in both races. He found the course tough going with a big messy swell, big tide and the fluctuating breeze coming off the land”. “Rose-Lee improved on her sailing from yesterday with two good starts finding good breeze to complete two good races. Rose was having her best race in the second heat today until a big shift of the breeze caught her out on the wrong side of the course,” said Fuller. The weather forecast is for stronger winds tomorrow, which will also create big waves. Rose-Lee has two races and Teariki has three races scheduled to catch up for the race that was cancelled yesterday. The Typhoon off the coast has weakened but a thunderstorm is predicted for Enoshima tomorrow evening. Chef de Mission, Tamzin Wardley confirmed that these results are not unexpected given the high quality of the field that our two sailors are racing against. “The world’s top sailors compete regularly on the international circuit, travelling the world from event to event and our sailors get to attend very few such regattas. “It will take a massive commitment of time and money to match these top guys out on the water. “Most of them would have been competing in weekly races since they were children.” “PNG’s team goal is to try to beat the other Pacific countries racing in the event also”. The regatta will be held over 10 races subject to the weather conditions expected, as the typhoon gets closer.

CHINA VACCINE ADMINISTERED TO OVER 5,000 IN PNG

Over 5,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine has been rolled out in Papua New Guinea which included about 604 non-Chinese citizens at the Port Moresby General Hospital since Thursday last week. The vaccine Sinopharm is one of two main coronavirus vaccines from China that got the nod from the World Health Organization to be rolled out in PNG in May and to date has been administered to at least 5,233 people in PNG. Furthermore, an additional 98 people have also received the Sinopharm vaccine on Monday, 26 July. This is according to the China Medical Team deputy leader Dr. Liu Zhenqui who revealed when donating equipment and consumables to assist the Port Moresby General Hospital in rolling out vaccinations. Since the launch of the Sinopharm vaccine at the hospital on 13th July, 2021, the Chinese Medical Team has been working in partnership with the local team to ensure that vaccinations are carried out. “We are so glad to have a chance to be here to make this donation to make the rollout of Sinopharm vaccine more convenient for our people in PNG,” said Dr. Liu. He said that people have been lining up at the hospital as early as 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. to be vaccinated and as “vaccines is the most helpful means to fight against the pandemic” more should be done to ensure many others are vaccinated too. Director Medical Services Dr. Kone Sobi thanked the team for handing over the donation on behalf of the Chinese Embassy and the People’s Republic of China and said, “The whole idea is that by vaccinating people, we can reduce the incidence of transmission and hopefully get out of this pandemic as soon as possible.” The items from the donation included a refrigerator, a cold chain box, and 1000 sets of isolation suits, 5000 gloves, 5000 masks, 5 temperature guns and 20 pieces of ice bricks.

CRICKET REACHING NEW HEIGHTS IN WNB

West New Britain has a proud sporting history, particularly in the football codes of AFL, Soccer and Rugby Union. Cricket was a minor sport that gained some popularity after some local business houses created a competition called Lottery Cricket. The success allowed the same business’s to also form an indoor cricket competition that still runs today in Kimbe. The first representative cricket side for WNB competed in the PNG Games in East New Britain in 2012 and a year later they had formed their own WNB Cricket Association. The Introduction of BSP School Kriket has driven the sport to new heights and it is not uncommon to see the school sports fields covered in the distinctive lime green uniforms of this award winning program. Nathan Henry has been the Regional Cricket Manager for Cricket PNG in this region for seven years and has been operating a highly successful BSP School Kriket program during this time. A qualified architectural draftsmen who found himself working in a game he loves who enjoys working with the children and developing their skills. “I love my job, that is why I have been here so long. It is exciting times to be involved in cricket with the Barras going to a T20 World Cup. I m looking for future Barras and Lewas when we run the BSP School Kriket program, it is my dream to see someone from WNB in the national side playing in a future World Cup.” Henry, describing his role said “it is my job to inspire the kids, teach them the skills and search for talent. I have set goals in my career, I have plans in place and want to see it through for WNB. I also play and have my whole family involved in cricket, it is a great sport that embraces community, I am very lucky doing this as my job.” We asked Henry about his successes to date “ we have had plenty of boys and girls screened through the Cricket PNG Talent ID system and some have been to Port Moresby to trail for the under 19 Garamuts. My favorite though is when a young boy called Tobie Charles who has a disability was participating in the BSP School Kriket Program and had his picture on the front page of the paper. He was so happy, biggest smile, cricket was the first sport that gave him a chance to play” Nathan and his development officers go to great lengths to bring cricket to the children of WNB. They reach thousands of kids each year and are expecting demand to grow once the people of WNB see the Barramundis on television playing in a World Cup later this year. Cricket is on the rise in PNG as everyone backs the Barras in their World Cup debut and it is people like Nathan who search for the next Assad Vala or Kaia Arua when conducting their BSP School Kriket clinics. The BSP School Kriket program currently runs in eleven provinces in PNG with expansion targeted within the Cricket PNG Strategic Plan.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION POSITIVELY IMPACTS COMMUNITIES IN HELA

Education is key to a successful future. Providing children with the opportunity to learn and develop is a vital pathway to them being able to fully contribute to their family, community, and nation. The Oil Search Foundation (OSF), through its Community Development Program, wants to improve literacy levels in elementary and primary schools. . A solid start in early childhood education has been shown to help children do well across their schooling years. In Hela Province, OSF in partnership with Buk Bilong Pikinini, the Provincial Education Division, school boards, church partners and the community members has built two literacy libraries in Fugwa and Habare. Over the past five years, these libraries have catered for 600 students aged between four to six years who have learnt to read and write in basic English. An emotional father from the Fugwa community shed tears when he heard his son fluently read for the first time from a book during his morning class, “We only speak our native Huli language, but today as I watched my son confidently read, my heart is full of joy.” Apart from reading and writing, the children are also taught good behaviours and manners, showing respect at are encouraged to teach others what they learn in school, which includes basic handwashing and other healthy habits. A teacher at Habare Literacy Library, Pale Mbipe said, “This early childhood centre has positively impacted the lives of our community members. Fathers who thought it is the responsibility of a mother to take their children to school have changed their views. A lot more dads are seen bringing their kids to class, because they now understand the value it has for them and their families in the long run.” She went on to say “We are also grateful for the support that OSF provides through local NGO, Buk Bilong Pikinini in building the capacity of our teachers. We are provided ongoing training, mentoring, and monitoring support, which has helped us effectively run the libraries. Our centre’s performance is recognised by the community and we are so grateful to OSF for investing in the next generation of Hela leaders.” OSF Chief Program Officer, Jean Martin said, “A child’s early years are the foundation for his or her future development. Our support to Fugwa and Habare is to nurture caring, capable, and responsible future citizens. Simply put, early childhood education helps the children gain the necessary academic, emotional, and social skills to prosper in life.”

A UNIVERSITY DEGREE AND NEW MUSIC VIDEO RELEASE FOR YOUNG BONSTEIN

23-year-old Bonstein Igime from a mixed parentage of Simbu and Western Highlands Provinces today made his parents the proudest when he walked onto the podium to receive his university degree during the University of Papua New Guinea's 66th Graduation Ceremony held at the Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium in Port Moresby. According to the youngster from Dom Kagul village in Simbu and Togoba in Hagen Central, the university degree has been seventeen years of sweat and blood on his parents’ part. For this reason, he dedicated the degree to both his parents as they are by right, the most important people in the world to be celebrating this achievement with. [caption id="attachment_12814" align="aligncenter" width="918"] All smiles with the parents after receiving his university degree[/caption] Bonstein, who graduated with a Bachelor in Business Management, majoring in Strategic Management, said that if it was not for his parents' support all through these years, he would not have made it this far. “My parents have been very supportive to me since I first started school and they have always aspired to give the very best to me and my siblings.” “Not only have they been supportive towards my education but they have also supported me in whatever interests I have pursued outside of education,” Bonstein said. For the young Simbu man, the special icing on his graduation celebrations will be the release of his second music video titled “Thankyou Papa Mama” which will be released on his social media platforms a week from now. Apart from being committed to his studies, Bonstein’s other passion lays in the performing arts, especially music. “I released my first music video titled “I’m Broken Inside” under Rebel Media Productions which was posted on their You Tube account mid of last year and this year, I am set to release my second music video which I am dedicating to both my parents.” “I was introduced to music when I was doing Grade 3 at Koroboro International School and since then, I have evolved into a self-made music artist,” Mr Igime said. The young university graduate said that the journey towards achieving this first degree has not been easy, especially with a father working as a self-employed contractor for the past seven years and a mother who devotes her time to selling foodstuff, meri blouses and anything else she can manage to sell. “Being the only boy in a family of five siblings, my parents have always put the interests of me and my sisters before anything else.” “I am the second born in the family and also the first to graduate from university after today and so I am determined to lead by example to my siblings who are still making their way up,” Bonstein said. “In order to show my appreciation and thanks to my hardworking parents, I have written this song for them and I am looking forward to releasing the video soon,” he added excitedly. Bonstein’s musical journey kicked off after he was required to present a song/musical item in his 6th grade class as part of an art assignment. Soon after, he went on to sing in church (SDA) and has had the opportunity to harness his musical talent over the years. “For me as an artist, I am more focused on the lyrical aspect of music making and not entirely on the musical arrangement side of things as I believe anyone can produce great music however, the challenge lies in using the essence of music to produce songs that carry meaning or lyrics that portray a deeper meaning to life,” said the upcoming music producer and songwriter. He said that while some young people have the luxury of receiving a good education and getting good grades in school, there are also others that do not have the opportunity to progress in education due to one reason or another. In most cases, there is always at least something unique or a special talent that is possessed by an individual. “Just because someone does not stand out in a crowd does not mean that they are not good enough.” “It’s just a matter of discovering one’s gifts and talents and then capitalising on these gifts and talents in order to stand out and in the process, make a mark for oneself in this ever-changing world,” the young artist said. Mr Igime said that with graduation out of the way now, his next biggest focus in life will be to secure a job that will initiate him into the workforce and help him build his career in the business world. “As a graduate from business school, I believe that more SMEs means more businesses to drive the economy forward and I can’t wait to be a part of this through my work and my music and hopefully contribute towards the growth of economy in this country,” added the young business graduate. After today’s graduation, Bonstein will focus more on finalising his music video which will be released on You Tube under Rebel Media Productions. UME GOES DOWN BRAVELY AGAINST AUSTRALIAN

Papua New Guinea’s lone boxer at the Olympic Games, John Ume fought in the Round of 32 in the lightweight (63kg) division on Sunday night. Ume lost unanimously against reigning Commonwealth Games champion and gold medallist, Australian, Harry Garside. The three rounds were each scored nine against 10 from all five judges with the final score being Ume 27 and Garside 30 points, across the board. The Australian athlete entourage congratulated Ume on a great performance and highlighted that more lead up competitions would have led to a very different outcome. Lack of time in the ring with quality boxers at an international level and sparring partners meant that Ume was under prepared for the physicality of the fight. Lead up training was all carried out in PNG due to the pandemic limiting overseas opportunities. Lockdowns in Port Moresby and the closure of the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre meant a change up in training venues including the South Side Gym, Murray Barracks Gym, and Ela Beach and at the makeshift gym at Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium with High Performance Sport PNG. Regardless of the situation in Port Moresby, Ume and his sparring partners along with his coach continued to prepare as best they could. He participated in a number of local bouts but missed the high quality experience and fight craft that he would have received if he had been based overseas. PNG has a long and proud history of sending boxers to the Olympics and Ume is the country’s 14th representative in the sport. Ume competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and won gold at the 2019 Pacific Games. He trains with the Defence Boxing Club with Coach Mark Keto supported by his club members and former Commonwealth Games coach, Peter Morrison in Sydney. Ume remained positive despite going down to Garside “I felt good throughout the fight; I thought I did enough in the first round but it wasn’t to be. I have no excuses about my preparation that is how it was with the impact of CPVID-19”. Coach Keto was proud of Ume’s efforts “I thought John’s defence was really strong. Some areas we need improvement on and that is something we will work on in the future. We got some really good support and feedback from the Australian coaches who heaped praise on John”. Boxing at the Tokyo 2020 Games was managed by a special taskforce of the IOC to ensure fairness and the IOC suspended integrity in the sport after AIBA in 2019 following an inquiry committee report into finance, governance, refereeing and judging.
