CHANGE BRINGS OPPORTUNITIES

Since January 2019, the Digital Strategic Business Unit set out to initiate, facilitate, implement and execute the Digital Strategy of BSP Financial Group Limited. In the space of two years, the Digital SBU has grown to encompass a fully-fledged dynamic PNG Team with staff specialised in Business Analysis, Project Management, Data and Market Insights, Digital Architecture, Content Management, Advocacy, and Program Developers. “The work and services delivered by the Digital SBU are refreshing and inspiring. And to be a part of that professional community, striving for improvement in customer experience through research and implementing innovative solutions, is both a privilege and motivation for continuous self-improvement and growth in our chosen fields of expertise”, Dorcas Jicki, Senior Support Technician. The objective of the half-day workshop held early July at the EmStret e-Space was to review the past six months of performance, celebrate achievements, staff journeys, challenges, and opportunities. “I enjoy my current role. Being involved in the initial stages of scoping out a solution or initiative and assessing whether the solution is feasible to be progressed into an actual project is one aspect I enjoy. In addition, being able to develop my capacity and learn on-the-go, by working alongside some of the agile-working staff with the vast amount of work experiences behind them is something I'm grateful for as well. I wake up each morning motivated to come to work because I know how my role adds value to the team, SBU, BSP and to our valued customers as a whole”, John Ngabung, Digital Architect. During the sessions, the staff recapped learnings and reiterated three core fundamental principles, Discipline, Consistency, and Accountability, in performance. One of the seven BSP Core Values we live by in BSP is TEAMWORK, “We work with, and for, each other, and we progress together.”

15 NEW COVID-19 CASES FOR PNG

Papua New Guinea has recorded 15 new COVID-19 cases on Monday 26 July, increasing the total number of cases to 17,670. The cases were reported in five provinces. Morobe reported eight, Madang four and the National Capital District, Western Highlands and Jiwaka all reported a single case each. Of the 15 cases, 10 were males whilst five were females. Their ages range between 52 and 59 years. Eight out of the 15 cases were experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 at the time of testing. The country's COVID-19 cases now stands at 17,670 with 192 known deaths. The total cumulative recoveries stands at 17,261. To date, a total of 145,959 people have tested for COVID-19. All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. Of the 17,670 COVID-19 cases confirmed to date: • 11,137 are males; • 6,376 are females; • 9,520 are symptomatic; • 3,560 had comorbidities; • 578 had to be hospitalized; • 40 were placed on ventilation; • 3,456 had contact with confirmed cases; and • 1,649 were health care workers. Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 194,367,010 including 485,128 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The global death toll stands at 4,167,742 including 7,999 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

TRUKAI RENEWS SPONSORSHIP FOR THE GOROKA SHOW

For the 65th instalment of the Goroka show, Trukai Industries has come on board to pledge K25,000 worth of sponsorship. The company in an effort to maintain its commitment to community driven cultural events, has announced the sponsorship in Goroka today. In a cheque presentation with Trukai Representatives and the Goroka Show Committee, Trukai officially committed K20,000 in cash and K5,000 worth of rice to help support the committee to stage the event. The rice will go towards helping to feed the 150 singsing groups that are earmarked to participate in the two day event. Trukai Limited’s Marketing Manager, Maryanne Tom said that the company was pleased to continue its support to the show which has over the years been a great cultural showcase for the community. “Trukai is proud to continue its support towards events like the Goroka show under its Roots rice brand that not only promotes, but celebrates and preserves PNG’s vibrant cultures. “Our history with the Goroka Show reaches back to about fifteen years and we are committed to continuing to enrich our various communities’ one sponsorship at a time and are excited to be part of one of PNG’s longest cultural show. Trukai will be present at the show set from September 17th to the 19th. There will be fun activities as well as show bags containing products and merchandise on sale.

NCDC SERIOUS IN CONTRIBUTING TO NATIONAL OUTCOME IN SME SPACE

Speaking to 60 vendors who will be participating in the first NCD SME Expo at the City Hall today in Port Moresby, Governor Hon. Powes Parkop said through his NCD SME Service Centre, his government would do its bit to close the gap between foreign and local business ownership in the country. He said the net foreign assets were negative, flagging the need for locals to expand into other industries dominated by foreigners other than being restricted to ‘tucker box, betel nut and daka (mustard)’ sales. Governor Parkop said SME was not a new concept and that it needed tangible actions by all levels of government. He clarified that financial support by his government through the Service Centre had three products that are customized to assist female-owned SMEs. The first, he said, is the Revolving Fund Initiative meant for assisting individuals with start-up capital which is to be repaid to help fellow female SME owners. The second is Incentive Top-up where SME performance will be tracked and if successful, 100 percent top-up will be made on the amount of funds saved. The last one is NCD SME Fair, a platform for vendors to sell their products. The first expo will be held at the public space outside Department of Works Headquarters at 4-Mile. Garden Hills based vendors today went through a pre-expo orientation information and training session, giving them a feel of what it is like and how it will be for them to participate in the SME Fair. The pre-expo orientation was aimed at identifying and providing good customer service, positive mind-sets, cleanliness, healthy & hygiene, and also follow the Covid-19 protocols to allow normal operation of business to support them financially in this time of pandemic. The training was facilitated by representatives from the City Pharmacy Limited, National Department of Health, NCD SME Service Centre, and NCDC Markets.

RADIO EQUIPMENT FOR BOUGAINVILLE POLICE RESPONSE

Police communications systems in Bougainville have been given a major boost with the handover of advanced radio equipment supported by Australia through the PNGAusPartnership. In a ceremony in Port Moresby, the Australian High Commission handed over K417,000 worth of critical radio equipment for use by police in Bougainville. The equipment included 17 high frequency radio units that will be installed in police stations across Bougainville, fitted into police vehicles and carried by officers in the field. The equipment will enable the police officers to clearly and reliably communicate, improving their responses to emergencies and calls for assistance - supporting community safety and security across the region. AMAZING PORT MOREBY TO HOST NEW MONTH SME EXPO

The SME Fair makes its debut in a public space outside the Depart of Works headquarter at 4-Mile this weekend, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The vision is to showcase a new suburb every month, including Hohola and Gerehu. The carnival style event is pitched as a sustained platform for vendors selling fresh produce, clothes, traditional artefacts, and food. There will also be live entertainment, with performances from youth volunteers from the Active City Development Programme. Dance, music, acrobats, circus, and bouncy castles are the other big highlights of the NCD SME Fair. Behind the scenes, there have been hectic activities to ensure the success of the initiative. Multiple awareness and training sessions have been conducted for the 60 participating vendors by the NCD SME Centre, the NCDC Market Division and ACDP. Participants have been trained on financial literacy, customer service, basic health and hygiene practices. For the community, this is an occasion not just to display their potential, but also take ownership. The ‘market mamas’ are taking their first step towards entrepreneurship, while the youth are being engaged as security personnel for the event. All city residents are invited to shop, join in the fun, and help support our communities as they dare to dream bigger.

GARDEN HILLS COMMUNITY GEARED TO HOST FIRST NCD SME FAIR

Garden Hills community in Amazing Port Moresby is all set to host the first NCD SME Fair, an effective avenue for growth and success for emerging businesses. With the combined force of Governor Powes Parkop, NCDC, NCD SME Service Centre and the Active City Development Programme backing the initiative, the monthly event aims to train, promote and support the local SMEs across the city. The first provincial government-backed SME Fair will be held on July 31, with 60 vendors participating and a product range of fresh produce, food, handicraft, clothes, and jewellery. In the past 2 weeks, there have been awareness sessions conducted by the organisers to ensure that the Garden Hills community understands the significance of the opportunity. In one such interaction with the vendors and the residents, NCD Governor’s First Secretary Ms. Immaculate Javia highlighted that having access to financial services and learning the basics of money management is one of the priority areas identified to lift SMEs in Port Moresby. “Our track record shows that a majority of the SMEs cannot sustain themselves, and it comes down to lack of support services. With a collaborative partnership, however, this is going to change.” NCDC Markets Division has been tasked to coordinate with the “market mamas”, with Officer Kay Kaugla leading the charge. “We are here to work with you, and make your dream bigger, by imparting the right knowledge, financial support and a big platform for sales,” Kaugla said. In addition to promoting the SMEs, the NCD SME Fair will also provide wholesome family entertainment to visitors, with dances, songs, acrobatics and more planned by the volunteers of the Active City Development Programme. ACDP Director, Fazilah Bazari said that this is also an important stage for showcasing talent and potential of the community. “This is an inclusive event – which means that we want to provide an opportunity to young children and the youth to express themselves positively. Through this engagement, the young population of the area will earn trust, respect and be a change for tomorrow.” Addressing the community, youth representative Hans Mark said: “Youths and kids shouldn’t be ignored, we are part of the society and the development and the transformation of the nation.” The municipal body has also taken an innovative approach to create dialogue between the city residents and their various divisions, by setting up information and feedback booths. With representation from the Waste, Health and Education divisions of NCDC, residents can find easy and convenient access to raise their concerns with the city administrators. The vision behind the NCD SME Fair initiative is to create opportunities for suburbs, both formal and informal, to be recognised as valued contributors to Port Moresby’s economy. At the end of the year, the SME Fairs will culminate into a Mega SME Expo.

BRISBANE BRONCOS RELAUNCHES BSP FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAM TO SCHOOLS WITH BSP

BSP Financial Group Limited (BSP) with Community Partner and popular Australian NRL Club, Brisbane Broncos, joined hands to relaunch the BSP Financial Literacy Program for schools at the Ted Diro Primary School and St Joseph’s International College respectively today ( Wednesday 28th, July 2021), in Port Moresby. This program is aimed at helping schoolchildren understand a life skill of saving money, basic understanding of simple budgeting and practice making decision on the use of their money. The selected primary and secondary schools within NCD and around PNG will take part in BSP’s Financial Literacy Program. The partnership will see the Brisbane Broncos assist BSP in promoting the Financial Literacy Program through various messages and talks with the students about the importance of saving. Present via the Zoom Online Conference to launch the program with BSP was Brisbane Broncos Ambassador and retired player, the legendary Sam Thaiday. Thaiday said: “we are happy to be a Community Partner of BSP to relaunch the 2021 BSP School Banking and BSP Financial Literacy Program for schools. Together with BSP, we are here to talk to you about the importance of saving your money.” “It is wise to save in a bank account so we are not tempted to spend all our money unnecessarily. When we save a little bit of the money we have now, we are able to buy things we need in the future, such as stationery, books or even a new computer,” added Thaiday. AIR NIUGINI CONTINUES TO OFFER TRAINING IN DANGEROUS GOODS TO EXTERNAL CUSTOMERS

Air Niugini is the only organization in the country offering Dangerous Goods (DG) training to external clients under the airline’s Part 141 training organization, through the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s (CASA), Civil Aviation Rule (CAR) Part 92, Standard Aviation Training Certificate (SATC). The training is being offered at Air Niugini’s Training Centre at 7mile here in Port Moresby. Last week, saw yet another group complete their week-long training. The group comprised of participants from Hevi Lift PNG, Puma Energy (Aviation), Daru Hospital (shipment of Infectious substances) and Unitech Lae (Chemical Safety Department). Dangerous goods are articles or substances that pose hazard to health, safety, property and environment and are listed in the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations. Air Niugini’s Non-Technical Training Instructor, Martin Tugano who normally conducts DG training explained that dangerous goods can be flammable liquids, explosives, radio-active materials, dangerous chemicals, infectious substances (Covid-19, TB, Polio cultures or samples) compressed gases, poisons and aerosols among others that pose high risks to the airlines, passengers and crew. Tugano said “Dangerous Goods, especially hidden DGs like lithium batteries, aerosols, paints, mercury, human or animal blood or body samples and tissues must be carefully checked and packed in accordance with regulations before they are airlifted.” He said transportation of dangerous goods by air is very restricted because of the pressure, temperature and vibrations experienced during air transport and therefore, it is important that companies who deal with dangerous goods need to undergo this training to help them understand what DGs are and how they can safely prepare them for transportation. “All parties involved, freight forwarders, shippers, those sending and also those receiving the goods need to understand the requirements.” Tugano also emphasized that passengers must comply and answer airline’s dangerous goods safety questions during check-in. These questions are necessary so that any risk to the aircraft and its passengers and crew posed by hidden dangerous goods are eliminated or minimized on the ground rather than in the air. There was positive feedback from participants emphasising that they have learnt a lot of new things during the week long training. Solomon Bulu from Unitech Lae said “It was an eye opener, I learned a lot of new things. I will use the skills and knowledge gained here once I am back on the job”. Jesse Wangoa from HeviLift said “Although the training was intense, it was very helpful and worth the money spent. The instructor is very knowledgeable on the subject matter.” Apart from the training on dangerous goods by Air Transport, Air Niugini also conducts training on Dangerous Goods by sea transport (IMDG Code). Air Niugini has trained many nationals and expatriates in all sectors, mostly targeting mining, exploration, airlines, freight forwarders, packers and chemical manufacturing companies. “We have highly qualified instructors who can deliver these training programmes tailored to your company’s needs. We can also provide on-site training if you have more than 10 participants,” Tugano concluded.
