UNVACCINATED POPULATION POSE HUGE HEALTH THREAT TO PNG.

COVID-19 vaccination coverage in the country to date is amongst the lowest in the world and puts PNG at a huge risk of developing new strains of COVID 19. COVID-19 Deputy Controller Dr Daoni Esorom sounded the warning yet again based on the statistics the National Pandemic Control Centre has received. "An unvaccinated population is a factory for the variant to thrive and also leaves space for new COVID 19 strains to come up," said Dr Daoni. Dr Daoni, who gave the coverage statistics update said based on the categories, health workers are the only highest vaccinated population and people with underlying health conditions being the lowest category to be vaccinated. The vaccination coverage is as stated under the categories; Elderly (45 years and above) – 9.4% received first dose and 2% fully immunized 18 years to 44 years – 2.4% received first dose and 0.6% fully immunized Person with comorbidities (underlying health conditions) – 07% received first dose and 0.1% fully immunized. Health workers – 32.7% received first dose and 6.2% fully immunized. Dr Daoni said to be fully immunized, a person needs to take two scheduled doses of the vaccination within 8-12 weeks apart. Meanwhile, apart from the static vaccination sites in the hospitals, the National Control Centre is working in partnership with the Provincial Health Authorities to carry out mobile vaccination in communities throughout the country to speed up the coverage.

GET VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19 DESPITE DECLINING CASES: MANNING

Commissioner of Police and Controller of the PNG COVID-19 National Pandemic Response David Manning has called upon citizens to come forward and be vaccinated against COVID-19 despite the declining cases in the country. Mr Manning said despite no cases being reported on Monday the country is not safe from COVID-19. He said the delay in receiving COVID-19 test results from the Provincial Health Authorities and other testing sites is the sole reason why no cases have been reported. The Controller said citizens must not be complacent as the dangers are not over. He says the only way to be safe against COVID-19 is to get fully vaccinated. Mr Manning said citizens who received the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine must ensure they get the second dose. As of August 5 a total of 21,090 people have received two doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and are fully vaccinated. A total of 91,962 persons received at least one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. A total of 384 persons have received the Sinopharm vaccine. In total, the number of persons who have received their first and second doses stands at 113,052. Meanwhile, the country’s COVID-19 cases now stands at 17,806 with 192 known deaths. The total cumulative recoveries stands at 17,479. To date, a total of 149,693 people have tested for COVID-19. All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 203,406,910 including 472,418 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll stands at 4,307,062 including 8,022 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

NEW ONLINE TOOL TO SUPPORT GROWTH OF PNG SME'S

Working in partnership with the Centre for Excellence in Financial Inclusion (CEFI) to find sustainable solutions to support the growth of the private sector, Business Link Pacific has launched a new Finance Finder tool in Papua New Guinea to provide information about the latest SME financial products and services in the country. The launching event was held at the Hilton Hotel in Port Moresby, August 11, and will gather key stakeholders in the financial and MSME sector from CEFI, MSME Council, SME Corporation, BPNG, chambers of commerce, and a range of banks and financial institutions, The new Finance Finder is available online for SMEs in PNG allowing businesses to search for loan options across a range of different providers, compare terms and interest rates, and save products to view later. The tool can be accessed at https://finance.businesslinkpacific.com or www.thecefi.org This Finance Finder is designed to support SMEs in PNG to find in one place the financing options that are right for them. The Finance Finder works in partnership with banks and institutions to provide the latest information about financial products for businesses. Currently, Financial institutions such as MiBank, Kina Bank, BSP Financial Group Limited, People’s Micro Bank, Women's Micro Bank, Kada Poroman Microfinance Limited and Credit Corporation Finance Limited are displaying information about the latest SME products. This list will continue to grow with new products and partners. “Businesses will be able to look at finance options online as well as applying through BLP for help with their applications,” said Steve Knapp, BLP’s Director. “We are pleased to be working alongside BLP to launch and roll out the Finance Finder tool in PNG”, said Saliya Ranasinghe Executive Director of CEFI. “The SME Loan product guide released last year by CEFI was the first step to bring this information together,” said Assistant Governor, Financial System Stability Group, Bank of PNG -Mr Ellison Pidik. “The launch of the online platform of the Finance Finder will definitely benefit the SMEs in the country by providing access to information about the range of local lending products available, SMEs will be able to identify the most suitable product for them,” adds the Assistant Governor. Business Link Pacific hopes this new tool will allow more SMEs to access financial services by offering updated information provided directly by partnering banks. BLP has various in-country partners in PNG offering face to face consultations, business diagnostics and business advisory services referrals that can support loan applications and provide financial advice. 6 NEW COVID-19 CASES REPORTED FOR PNG

Papua New Guinea has recorded 6 new COVID-19 cases on the weekend increasing the country's total number of cases to 17,806. On Saturday August 07, four new cases of COVID-19 were reported while another 2 more cases reported on Sunday 08. The cases were reported in the National Capital District and Morobe respectively. Of the four cases reported on Saturday, three were males whilst one was a female. Their ages range between 36 to 60 years old. On Sunday, the two cases reported were a male and a female. They were aged 36 and 60 years old. The country’s COVID-19 cases now stands at 17,806 with 192 known deaths. The total cumulative recoveries stands at 17,478. To date, a total of 149,493 people have tested for COVID-19. All 22 provinces including the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) have reported cases. Globally, the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has reached 202,926,168 including 563,596 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The death toll stands at 4,298,298 including 8,557 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Every year, schools and libraries across Papua New Guinea spend a week celebrating books and the importance of reading them, and there is no better way than to see children draw inspiration from these books. Such were the stories of these five to six-year-old children from Habare Literacy Library in Hela Province, who spoke confidently of their future aspirations during their book week celebrations last week. An ambitious Christabellyn Kapi (five-year-old) of Kumaga village in the Tari Pori District, with enthusiasm her voice, shared her dream of becoming a doctor. “I attend class every day because I want to become a doctor when I grow up. My teacher says, to be one, I must read a lot of books.” said Christabelin during her classroom activity whilst commemorating the week. Margret Andrew, teacher at Habare Literacy Library said, “It is pleasing to see that these children have big dreams of their own. As early childhood teachers, our role is to support their learning and help them develop key skills that provide the basis for future learning.” “With assistance from our partners, Oil Search Foundation (OSF) and Buk Bilong Pikinini, we had a week full of educational activities for our students. These included drawing pictures and dressing up as characters of who they want to become according to the professions they chose.” “We invited a policeman, an accountant, teachers, nurses who came dressed in their work uniforms to motivate these children to focus on education if they want to become like them.” adds Andrew OSF Chief of Programs, Jean Martin said, “Book week is a great time to encourage children to read more. Our support to the Literacy Libraries in Habare, Fugwa and Kikori is to create a safe space for children in their early years to develop a love for reading, and other positive values enabling them to grow holistically.”

GOVERNMENT TUITION FEE SUBSIDY FUNDS REMITTED TO SCHOOLS

K58 million from the government's tuition fee subsidy funds has been remitted to the bank accounts of Flexibles, Open and Distance Education (FODE), Secondary, National High and Vocational schools. The Minister for Education Jimmy Uguro confirmed that out of the K486.3 million allocated for this year, a total of K 248.5 million has been released so far. From that allocation, a total of K 222.5 million has been paid to schools with K 237.8 million still outstanding for Terms 3 and 4. "I want to remind all the schools and their administrations once again to use the money wisely and spend only on priority areas that will improve the teaching and learning in their school," said Minister Uguro The Minister also called on all school boards and administrators to use some portion of these funds to support education in emergency and WaSH programs in their schools in order to prevent the spread of the Corona virus. "I thank the national government for continuing to honor its commitment by making funds available to pay the schools despite the difficult economic situation the country is facing," Uguro said.
