FATAL ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIFE OF PNGDF SOLDIER IN MT HAGEN

The Papua New Guinea Defence Force confirms that a soldier passed away yesterday in Mt Hagen after a fatal road accident. Late 815200, Private Lembo, Leonard, 27 is from Pausa in Wapenamanda District of Enga Province. The deceased died upon impact following a penetrative chest injury resulting in air leaking and bleeding into the lung cavity. Acting Chief of Defence Force Commodore Philip Polewara conveyed his condolence to the family of the deceased. Three others are in a stable at the Mt Hagen General Hospital. The fourth soldier who was driving was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred between 16:30 and 17:00 at Keltiga outside of Mt Hagen. The soldiers are from the 1st Battalion Royal Pacific Islands Regiment’s Charlie Company. They were returning to Hela after attending a military court case in Mt Hagen on Saturday. PNGDF Headquarters is working with the Task Force Headquarters in Mt Hagen to establish the cause of the accident.

NATURE PARK SUPPORTS PNGAUS PARTNERSHIP SECONDARY SCHOOLS INITIATIVE

The Port Moresby Nature Park has partnered with its Sister Zoo, Zoo’s Victoria and PNGAus Partnership Secondary Schools to provide materials to teach the STEM and the Environment curriculum activity to PNG students, including: A teacher self-directed course to familiarise yourself with the curriculum activity, in Powerpoint format, A teaching guide, to complement the self-directed course and provide a step-by-step guide on how to teach the STEM & the Environment curriculum activity, in PDF format, A student workbook, for students to use as they undertake the STEM and the Environment curriculum activity, in PDF format, A YouTube playlist of all the activity videos for teachers to use as they teach the STEM & the Environment curriculum activity. The activity asks students to use the Connect, Understand, Act model and choose from one of two animal species, the Blue-eyed Cockatoo or Tree Kangaroo and to come up with Enrichment Items that that animal would be able to use as an activity to continue in its welfare and wellbeing at the Nature Park. This program, enhances the student’s capabilities to use science by understanding the animals behaviour, technology in the animal’s movement, engineering in the building of the enrichment device and mathematics in problem solving. The three key objectives of the PNGAus Partnership Secondary Schools initiative are to: 1. Improve secondary school education capabilities in targeted areas, such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), English language, youth agency and leadership, girls’ education and inclusive education. 2. Build student empowerment through the development of leadership skills and an expanded world view. 3. Strengthen the public diplomacy between the two countries. The course was initially designed to allow face to face teaching but despite COVID-19 travel restrictions preventing these learning activities to occur, the PNGAus Partnerships Secondary Schools are running a number of online projects and activities to continue to strengthen the school partnerships and community and build on the outcomes achieved to date. UNIVERSITIES SIGN MOU TO ADDRESS ISSUES & WORK TOGETHER FOR COMMON GOOD

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the Student Representative Council (SRC) Presidents of the University of Papua New Guinea, University of Technology, Pacific Adventist University, Divine Word University, IBS University and the University of Goroka at the UPNG SRC Office on Sunday 22nd of August. UPNG SRC President Mr. Bradley Yombon-Copio said the main purpose of the MOU is to have an understanding and agreement in place for state institutions as well as private and church run institutions to work in partnership for future activities such as student exchange programs, sporting activities, academic activities like debates and most importantly to outline the DHERST Policies which affects state institutions across the country. “There are issues that affect each institution and we believe that if we focus and prioritize our interest within the institutions and focus on producing quality elites and change our direction on what we were actually known for, then we can change the future of this country,” said Bradley. Mr. Yombon-Copio said all tertiary institutions are producing the future leaders of this country and as such the way forward is for the National Government to partner together with the institutions in order to produce quality elites for the future. He said this is the first step in building the right foundations so that the SRC and students can partner and work together for a common good. “I thank the leaders of the institutions who are here and have agreed to work together and this is the first step in building the right foundations so that our SRC and students can partner and work together for a common good,” said Mr. Yombon-Copio. University of Goroka SRC President Jim Harold said Papua New Guinea as a nation has the potential to excel and it has to start with the place where intellectuals are produced and that is the tertiary institutions. He said the signing of the MOU will be a starting point and foundation on which the upcoming SRC Presidents will follow and add on to. “This MOU will create an avenue for students to reach out not just in academic work but also with the exchange programs, inter-university programs such as this sporting event which will help to cut down anti-social behaviors like drunkenness and other behaviors which are not acceptable,” Mr. Harold said. Elizah Kapma, SRC President for the University of Technology said, “How can this country be developed when the institutions that are going to be developing this country are not standing together as one.” “We have to stand as one to bring this nation forward for the next 46 years and let us look forward to what we can do for our country." God has given us wisdom to make a very tough call to bring these institutions together regardless of the challenges whatsoever,” Mr Kapma said. Mr Kapma said this is the time to prove to the nation that the elites of this country are standing as one and this opportunity is not to be taken for granted but to be taken with open arms to make sure that what has been started today will go a long way. “The Vice Chancellors Cup is one of the events hosted to commemorate this great occasion and having all universities coming together to sign this MOU is the icing on the cake,” President Elizah said. Mr Kapma said that the Univeristy of Technology is happy to be standing together in unity with the rest of the other institutions to move this agenda forward.

JOURNOS UPSKILLED WITH SOCIAL MEDIA TACTICS

Fourteen Port Moresby based journalists attended a virtual social media training organized by the PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum in the lead up to the organisation’s annual Community Affairs and Media workshop held recently. An hour virtual training sponsored by ExxonMobil PNG, operator of PNG LNG Project had participants from nine media organisations. ExxonMobil PNG Media and Communications Manager, Susil Nelson-Kongoi, said social media platforms are the ‘go to place’ for news and current issues today. “Recognising the need to keep up with the current trends, ExxonMobil PNG saw that it was beneficial to support the Chamber with this training effort.” As the digital world is fast becoming the way of doing business, media organisations in the country are embracing technology to bring news and current issues to their audience using social media platforms like Facebook. Public Relations and Media Manager of PNG Chamber of Mines & Petroleum, Neville Choi, thanked journalists and reporters for taking the time to participate in the training and thanked ExxonMobil PNG for its continued support in this area. “We hope to strengthen our links and mutual understanding of how the resource sector works in our country and if anything for the purpose of informing our people.” The training provided the participants with skills to develop social media content, guiding principles and tactics to engage effectively on their social media channels. Another session was held with the industry community affairs and business development participants to close off the two day PNG Chamber of Mines & Petroleum workshop. About 90 people participated in person and also virtually.

OUTREACH GROUP RAISING FUNDS FOR NEW CHURCH BUILDING

Church Without Walls International (CWWI) hosted its’ first major fundraiser by way of a Gospel Concert on Saturday 22nd August at The Salvation Army Roy Bungay Memorial Hall in Boroko, Port Moresby. The ministry which is an outreach arm of the North Port Moresby United Church Circuit is currently raising funds so that they can build a church building where they can conduct their meetings. Reverend Jack Moha who is the Lead Pastor of the ministry said that they have been renting a space at the Country Women’s Association located at 3 Mile to conduct their meetings since the ministry came into effect in January this year. [caption id="attachment_14024" align="aligncenter" width="930"] Reverend Jack Moha and Marama Ato Moha[/caption] “The ministry came into effect as of January after I completed my term as a Minister at the Sioni Kami Memorial Church last December.” “I was not posted to another congregation after my term ended and so I decided to continue carrying on my missionary work by starting up an outreach ministry and that is how Church Without Walls came to be,” Reverend Moha said. Marama Ato Moha, wife of Reverend Moha and Advisor for CWWI said that the church once built will bear the name Church Without Walls United Church and will be open to people from all walks of life who wish to step into the building to find spiritual refreshing. “We are not fully recognised as a congregation yet however the Regional Executive Council of the United Church urban region has recognised CWWI as an outreach arm of the North Port Moresby Circuit,” Marama Ato said. “This is our first major fundraiser for our new church building.” “We don’t know where the land will be or how big the church will be but we have started raising funds and we leave the rest to God for his plan and purpose to be accomplished,” added Marama Ato. The Church Without Walls International ministry will be hosting another major fundraiser in November which will be a Gala Dinner. All proceeds raised from the fundraisers will go towards building a new church building for its’ increasing congregation.

COVID: AUSTRALIAN POLICE CLASH WITH ANTI-LOCKDOWN PROTESTERS

Police in the Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney have clashed with thousands of people protesting against Covid lockdowns. In Melbourne, mounted officers used pepper spray when elements of a 4,000-strong rally broke through police lines. Police arrested 218 people, and at least seven officers were injured. In Sydney, where lockdown measures have been extended for another month, more than 1,000 officers dispersed protests. It came as the state of New South Wales (NSW), of which Sydney is the capital, recorded 825 new locally-acquired cases, the highest number for any Australian territory in a 24-hour period. He said police had stopped about 38,000 cars heading into the city centre and handed out 260 infringement notices to people across the state suspected of breaching lockdown regulations. He called the actions of the protesters "deplorable", saying the police response was not about stopping free speech but stopping the spread of coronavirus. AFGHANISTAN: SPORT BODIES CALL FOR EMERGENCY EVACUATION OF FEMALE PLAYERS

Football's world governing body Fifa has written to a number of governments to request the emergency evacuation of female players from Afghanistan. Players are said to fear for their lives following the Taliban's takeover of the Afghan capital Kabul. Players' organisation Fifpro is also calling for help. The union said it was working with governments to establish an evacuation plan, adding: "The ambition is to bring as many people to safety as possible." Fifa said the situation in Afghanistan "remains unstable and very worrying". The Sports Desk podcast: Afghanistan and the threat to progress through sport Earlier this week, former Afghanistan national women's team captain Khalida Popal pleaded with sporting bodies to "help get our players safe" because she fears for those left behind under the Taliban rule. Many of the country's female footballers have gone into hiding since the takeover. "I have not been able to sleep, I have been crying and feeling helpless," said Popal, who was pivotal in forming the first Afghanistan women's football team in 2007. During their previous rule some 20 years ago, the Taliban stopped girls from receiving any form of education. Women were unable to leave their homes without a male relative, were not allowed to work and were forced to wear the all-covering burqa. Those who defied them commonly received punishments and beatings. Haley Carter, former assistant coach of the Afghan women's team, is among those to have been in contact with a number of players in hiding. "If anybody finds out that they're talking to anyone on the outside, their life is in even more danger," Carter told BBC World Service Sport. The US Marines veteran said she had received a message from one player saying: "They are going to kill us. They don't want girls to play football and we're in risk." Carter has advised players in hiding to "stay smart, stay safe and be patient", as she joined Popal in calling on sporting bodies to help protect those most at risk. A Fifa spokesperson said in a statement: "We remain in contact with the Afghanistan Football Federation, and other stakeholders, and continue to receive updates from players in the country." Young multi-talented singer and songwriter Sean Rii from the Solomon Islands has just released his latest single ‘Chu Chu’ and the song has reached over 100K views on YouTube in its’ first week of release. Sean Rii said the song was inspired by watching online videos and especially with so many remixes blowing up, he wanted to produce a vibe that everyone could enjoy. “I was so happy that the song has had such a great feedback thanks to a really strong fan base here in Papua New Guinea,” said Sean Rii. Meanwhile on Tiktok, users have joined in the trend by uploading their dance versions of Chu Chu and it is something you would certainly not want to miss. “It's nice to see people engaging with the song, I like sharing those dance videos whenever they tag me,” Sean Rii said. The famous SI artist said that seeing people express themselves freely with his new music brings a sense of joy to him and he would like to see more of this. Despite COVID19 which has been a threat to all Papua New Guinean music artists in hosting concerts or gigs, Sean Rii has been keeping his fans entertained by staging concerts here in the city. “I try to bring as much fire to my concerts as I possibly can and anyone that has been to my live shows would know that our shows are always full of energy.” “We definitely would like to go bigger with bigger venues, bigger audiences and bigger events,” the singer added. GREECE ERECTS FENCE AT TURKEY BORDER AMID WARNINGS OF AFGHAN MIGRANT SURGE

Greece has installed a 40km (25-mile) fence and surveillance system on its border with Turkey amid concern over a surge of migrants from Afghanistan. "We cannot wait, passively, for the possible impact," Greece's Citizens' Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis said on a visit to the region of Evros on Friday. "Our borders will remain inviolable." His comments came as Turkey called on European countries to take responsibility for Afghan migrants. In a telephone conversation with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said a sharp increase in people leaving Afghanistan could pose "a serious challenge for everyone". "A new wave of migration is inevitable if the necessary measures are not taken in Afghanistan and in Iran," Mr Erdogan said. The rapid takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban, an Islamist militant group, has left some fearing for their lives and seeking to escape the country, often by any means necessary. Mr Chrisochoidis said the crisis had created new "possibilities for migrant flows" into Europe. Greece, which was on the frontline of the migrant crisis in 2015 when more than a million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East crossed from Turkey into the EU, has said it may send back any Afghans that arrive illegally through the country. Of those who arrived in Greece during the migrant crisis, many travelled further north throughout Europe, but about 60,000 have remained in the country. Last year, Athens temporarily blocked new asylum applications after Mr Erdogan said Turkey had "opened the doors" for migrants to travel to the EU. TRUKAI HELPS CAMERON FOOD APPEAL

Trukai Industries Limited has given half a tonne of rice to the Cameron Secondary Food Appeal. The Secondary school in Alotau reached out recently due to lack of funding from delayed subsidies affecting boarding schools. According to the Appeal Coordinator, Magistrate Rebecca Kwayaila, the food appeal was launched when the school was forced to send their boarding students home. Magistrate Kwayalia in her appeal letter stated that students from outer islands and other parts of the province who had no relatives remained on school grounds and were being supported by staff with basic meals. Hence the appeal was to help feed the students until rations were made available. Today, Trukai representatives were on ground at the Cameron Secondary school to hand over 50 Roots Medium grain 10kg bags in a show of support to the appeal. Trukai Industries Marketing Manager, Maryanne Tom, said that the company felt obligated to step up and help the students who were in need. “We at Trukai believe in being part of the community and go out of our way to help where we can. “These students represent the future of our nation, and it would be a shame to see them in need when we can help give a helping hand to facilitate for their wellbeing”. Meanwhile, Magistrate Kwayalia and her committee have created a WhatsApp group as well as posted on Facebook calling for donations for cash or kind. BSP SUPPORTS PNG PARALYMPICS TEAM TO TOKYO
