PANGU GAINS 2 MORE MPS

Two members of Parliament have joined the ruling Pangu Pati in an announcement made by the Prime Minister yesterday. The move takes Pangu Pati’s number to 37, following the suspension of another Pangu Pati member by the courts yesterday. The two MPs include South Bougainville MP and Minister of Information and Communication Technology Timothy Masiu and Bogia MP Robert Naguri. The two were former members of the National Alliance Party. Both MPs expressed their move as voluntary and based on their judgement on the current political landscape. Masiu said he moved because he admired Pangu Pati leader and Prime Minister James Marape’s leadership in the Bougainville issue and also because of his electorate’s long tradition with the party itself. “The first representative of South Bougainville and Pangu Pati leader before independence was Sir Paul Lapun and my move is simply about going back to where I rightfully belong,” Mr Masiu said. Naguri also shared the same sentiment in regard to Marape’s leadership in dealing with the Manam Islanders resettlement issue, something that he said past governments and his former party did not actively address. “I have also sought advice from a very senior member of parliament on the decision and he has advised me to be with the ruling party,” Mr Naguri said. Marape added that the long awaited Pangu Pati convention will be held at Hilton Hotel this Friday where they will lay down the party’s structure and policies going into the 2022 National General Elections.

PM LAUNCHES MANAGALAS FOREST CARBON PILOT PROJECT

Prime Minister James Marape officially launched the Forest Carbon Pilot Project at the Afore District Sub-Station, Oro Province. This new project is unlike the Carbon Trading Program where countries are given credits for just conserving their Rainforest. The Managalas Forest Carbon Pilot Project is a sustainable intergrated land development project where the actual rainforest is conserved and the grass plains are reforested with cash crops like coffee, coconut and even timber. Prime Minister Marape Marape commended the Governor for Oro, Gary Juffa for his leadership in this area and urged the people of Afore to work with him on the project. To help start off the project, the Prime Minister committed K5 million to the project. "This is to ensure what we are talking about becomes a reality. We do not want to come and just talk about it. We want the project to really happen," Prime Minister Marape said. The Prime Minister told the people that the benefits for this project may take time to manifest but it will benefit their children and their children's children over the many years to come. He urged them to use the opportunity to go into agricultural SMEs and the government will give price support so that they sell their produce at a good K6 per kilogram for coffee and K3.00 per kilogram for cocoa. The Prime Minister also said the government will set up buying hubs in the district so that the people do not have to travel all the way to Popondetta to sell their produce. "This will not be the only developments taking place. We will also bring in schools. I am going to give K1 million to provincial government for the only High School in Afore," he said. "We will also give K500,000 to be distributed equally to schools in the Afore Local Level Government. "We will also fix and upgrade the road. I will be giving K5 million to Governor Juffa to continue with the road upgrade already happening from Oro Bay." Prime Minister Marape said when the conservation project becomes a reality, your schools, hospitals and roads must become better. Conservation has money in it and it will come in a holistic way. According to a report in the Vivid Economy in 2020, nature based solutions such as these not only conserve biodiversity and strengthen community resilience, it also has the potential to generate USD 800 billion in annual revenues by 2050.

CONFERENCE AIMED AT INSPIRING WOMEN & GIRLS

SIONE Kami Memorial Church (RSKMC) will host a first of its kind, “King’s Daughters Conference 2021” this week, aimed at informing, equipping and inspiring women through the Word of God and testimony so that they live purposeful and victorious lives. The inaugural conference will be held from 6:00pm to 8.30pm nightly from Thursday August 26th to Saturday August 28th, with a morning session planned for “Equipping the Believer” workshops for the adult participants and a “Girl Empowerment Program” in the afternoon for school-aged girls (13 year-olds to 18 year-olds) on Saturday August 28th. Acting Senior Minister Rev. Lologa Gerega said the conference’s theme is “Made for Honour: Power and Purpose of Woman” and is expected to be an enlightening, enriching and empowering program for believers who are seeking God to know their value and discover their purpose.” Speakers include the United Church in Papua New Guinea Urban Region Bishop Rev. Jacob Harry who will speak on the topic; "Turning King's Daughters into king makers" and Planetshakers Port Moresby Campus Pastor Thomas Hola who will speak on the topic: "Understanding your identity and value as a woman"; with a focus on the youth. A highlight of the program are panel discussions which will be held each night on topics including "Overcoming Your Past to Step into Your Destiny", "Hook up & Shack up Culture Breaking Destinies" and "Turning King's Daughters into King Makers". GOVERNOR POWI SUSPENDED, RECOUNT ORDERED.

The National Court has suspended current Southern Highlands Province Governor William Powi from office effective August 31st and ordered a recount for the regional seat after a long battle in the court of disputed returns. This follows the Supreme Court’s decision last week in dismissing a slip rule application by Powi and the Electoral Commission on a National Court’s decision earlier that ordered a recount. Justice David Cannings in handing down the decision via video link ordered that the result of the recount be presented to the court by November 05, 2021, nullifying the election results for the regional seat in 2017. Justice Cannings made the decision on the grounds that Powi had not reached the absolute majority of votes when former Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato made the declaration in the 2017 National General Elections. The petition was filed by runner up candidate Pastor Bernard Kaku in a lengthy court battle. Justice Cannings also ordered all parties to return back to court to check they comply with the orders.

NATIONAL CONTROL CENTRE TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST INDIAN HIGH COMMISSION & OTHERS ON REPATRIATION FLIGHT DECEPTION PNG COVID-19

COVID-19 Pandemic Controller, David Manning, has expressed his anger and disappointment at the way in which India's High Commission in Port Moresby deliberately participated in the deception that resulted in unauthorised passengers, including four infected with COVID-19, arriving in Papua New Guinea. Mr Manning said the behaviour of those involved in the dishonest process compromises the safety and security of Papua New Guinea. Mr Manning said, “I have requested Papua New Guinea’s Department of Foreign Affairs to deal with the Indian High Commission through appropriate diplomatic channels, while the charter company and the airline, as well as any middle-men, will now face the consequences for their actions. “All that the High Commission of India has achieved through this action is to undermine the trust of a friendly nation. India must respect Papua New Guinea as a sovereign nation, and not participate in actions involving unscrupulous people, to violate our laws and undermine public health and safety measures. “As a consequence of this deliberate show of disrespect against the people and Government of Papua New Guinea, there is now an indefinite ban on any further repatriation flights from India. Further, CapaJet and Garuda Indonesia are now prevented from entering Papua New Guinea airspace until further notice.” Mr Manning said strict safety measures for the repatriation flight had been agreed in order to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 Delta strain from India. “Considering the devastating outbreak of the COVID-19 Delta strain in India which has killed hundreds of thousands of people, our Government had to be very strict with the Indian Government in order to keep Papua New Guineans safe.” This is why the proposed repatriation flight from India had been rejected four times, and was only approved after the set measures had been agreed with representatives of the Indian High Commission. This included a cap on the number of passengers that would arrive on the flight, and that all passengers would take a COVID-19 PCR test two days prior to the aircraft departing. “First, the agreement on the number of approved passengers was broken when the Indian Government and flight operators allowed 81 passengers onto the aircraft intending to disembark in Papua New Guinea. While some of these passengers were Papua New Guinea citizens, and the remainder had current and valid visas, the point is that the Indian Government broke our agreement by allowing so many to travel.” “It was only after the aircraft had stopped to refuel in Indonesia, and then departed for Port Moresby, that the truth was revealed. Consideration was given to turning the aircraft around, but that would only have caused distress to PNG citizens on the flight and other legitimate travelers who were not part of the deception. “Secondly, the Indian Government allowed some passengers to board the aircraft without undertaking a COVID-19 test and returning a negative result. This failure has meant that the flight carried four individuals into Papua New Guinea who are infected with COVID-19. “We are very fortunate that each of these four people appeared to no longer be infectious, and all other passengers have been tested and returned negative results.” Finally, Mr Manning said the Government of Indonesia will be receiving correspondence from the Department of Foreign Affairs calling on the Ambassador to explain his government’s involvement in the scandal. He said these matters pertain to the boarding of Indonesian passengers onto the aircraft, and the actions of Garuda Indonesia as a State-owned airline.

PROSPECTS IN MOBILE CLINIC PROGRAM

Moresby North West MP Lohia Boe Samuel is planning on having mobile clinics within Motu Koita villages in his electorate for the interest of the people’s health care. Mr Boe Samuel made mention of this plan after the recent launch of a St John Ambulance station in his electorate. “I will have a dialogue with the Prime Minister to have some of the APEC buses allocated for this program,” Mr Boe Samuel said. “I’ve noticed that the number of people wanting to receive medical treatment at the clinic in Konedobu is overwhelming and therefore it is critical to have a health facility to serve the Motu Koita villages.” The member for Moresby North West said that unfortunately, he does not have much time left in his term to set up a health facility hence he has opted to have the mobile clinics running. “The mobile clinics will have medical consumables and personnel on board that will be rostered to carry out medical services in the respective communities from time to time.” He says this service is aimed for the people in ward 1 of his electorate which stretches from Hanuabada village to Tatana and further inland to Baruni village.

LAST BALL THRILLER

The Barras Board XI captained by national skipper, Assad Vala, won the Isuzu Barras T20 Bash Grand Final in a last ball thriller at Amini Park on Sunday. In a day that culminated in the official announcement of the ICC T20 World Cup Barras squad the final was a fitting entre. Vala won the toss and elected to send the Legends into bat with the decision paying dividends immediately as Ura was dimissed by Diho without scoring. CJ Amini (5) was the next to go before L Siaka (14) and S Bau (16) put on a steadying partnership. However, the Legends lost regular wickets with the Board XI bowlers running through their middle order. Damien Ravu was the last man out after he had added an invaluable 25 runs to lift his sides total to 110. Bobby Diho continues to show his skill taking 3/13 with Hiri Hiri also picking up 3/25, Sema Kamea and Jason Kila also multiple wicket takers with two each in a dominant display by the Board XI bowling attack. The opening pair of Toka and Vanua got the Board XI off to a steady start in what seemed to be a very achievable run chase before Vanua (16) was dimissed with the score on 31. Vala joined Toka at the crease and progressed the total to 52 before Vala (10) was bowled by Bau. The Legend bowlers then got a spring in their step removing the next five wickets for a combined 31 runs to put them back in the frame with the Board XI 8/83. Nosaina Pokana (22) and Bobby Diho (18) then dug in and frustrated the Legends attack, wrestling back control, when Pokana was eventually dimissed by Kabua Vagi on the second last ball the equation was simple, The Board XI needed two runs to win off the last ball. Bobby Diho on strike, facing up to Kabua Vagi, crashed one square to the boundary to secure a dramatic 3 run victory. All six Legends bowlers took wickets with the spin of Bau and Amini getting two wickets each, although they all toiled hard it was not to be with the Board XI winning the nailbitter. Nosaina Pokana was named player of the final in what must have been a very close decision over last ball hero, Bobby Diho! Speaking after the game, National Assiatnt Coach, John Ovia, said “ it was a fitting final to a very good Isuzu Bash tournament, you can’t get any closer than that, sometimes it is the lower scoring games that are more exciting and tense. The bowlers were on top today for both sides and todays results showed that our Barra’s lower order batsmen can produce important runs under pressure.Well done to Bobby Diho, always a great feeling to get the job done under that type of game situation, last ball!” The Barras World Cup squads next game will be a One Day International against Nepal in Oman on the 4th of September.
