CLAN LEADERS DEMAND INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED POLICE SHOOTINGS
Leaders of Watenge clan of the Yambatan tribe in Tsak Valley, Wapenamanda District of Enga Province, submitted a petition to the police hierarchy and Enga Provincial Government on Thursday, demanding an immediate investigation into a deadly security operation. The petition, received by Highlands Region Western End Commander Joseph Tondop, and acting Provincial Police Commander Kelly Sombe, highlights allegations of excessive force during the enforcement of the Counter Terrorism Act by Police Tactical Group Kumul-23 on January 2, 2026.
The community leaders, led by Councillor Alas Kangual of Alumanda Ward 9, reported that the incident began at 3AM when more than twenty police vehicles arrived while residents were asleep.
Gunfire reportedly lasted until 8AM, during which time five people were killed, and several others were wounded or detained.
Among the deceased were Village Court Magistrate Winis Kaki and his wife Margret Kaki, a primary school teacher.
Also killed were 75-year-old former Councillor Enakawan Kiponge and two young men, Jarnol Taso and Isaac Wia.
Four additional young men between the ages of 18 and 25 are currently receiving treatment for bullet wounds at Mt Hagen Provincial Hospital.
Furthermore, three men; identified as a pastor, a primary school headmaster, and a villager, remain in police custody in Mendi.
The Watenge leaders maintain that their clan has never been involved in tribal fighting and they have questioned the validity of the intelligence reports that led to the raid.
They claim that innocent people were targeted randomly, some from distances of up to 1.5 kilometres, as they moved around in panic.
The petition demands a thorough and independent investigation into the terms of reference for the operation and calls for the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) to facilitate post-mortem examinations for the five victims.
Councillor Kangual also appealed for the release of the detainees, arguing they should not be charged under the Counter Terrorism Act.
The clan is seeking state compensation for the victims and has requested a formal response to their demands within three working days.
In response, Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Tondop expressed his condolences to the grieving families but emphasized that the joint security forces acted on local intelligence to capture persons of interest.
While he maintained that those in custody have the right to clear themselves in court, he assured the clan that police would assist with the post-mortem process.
He further stated that the Enga CID must be allowed to access the incident sites this weekend to assess the situation and ensure law enforcement is held accountable if any wrongdoing is confirmed.

PNG UOT CLEARS AIR ON FEES DEADLINE
Students at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNG UoT) late last year received the new school fee structure for 2026 with a noticeable rise in fees and a surprisingly short payment deadline.Speculations on the school fee payment deadline filled social media platforms, mainly WhatsApp and Facebook, stating that students had until January 16th to complete full payments or they would not be eligible to register for the academic year.
Students expressed their frustration through social media stating that without the DHEARST TESAS list students would be confused on the correct category of fees to pay.
Mr. Darren Maino, President of the Lae City Students and Staff Association, expressed that âthe increase in the school fees will be a big challenge to students this yearâ
âStudents and the general public are advised to interpret information disseminated through the official PNGUOT communication channels,â said Mr. Maino.
Meanwhile, the PNG University of Technology Student Representative Senate (SRS) announced on their official channel yesterday, 7th of January, that the article published by Post Courier about the feeâs deadline contained information that was not verified by the university.
The university around 12PM today released a public statement authorized by their Registrar Mrs. Veronica Thomas, clarifying that the school fee payment deadline will be extended to the 30th of January.
The statement also noted that the extension of the deadline comes with the condition that students, both new intakes and continuing, are required to pay a minimum of 60% of the total fees including outstanding fees before registering for the academic year 2026.

POLICE MINISTER CONFIRMS TSAK VALLEY OPERATION WAS TO RECOVER ILLEGAL GUNS
The Minister for Police, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr has confirmed that a joint security operation that was carried out in the Tsak Valley in Enga Province, was targeting illegal high-powered firearms that were posing serious threat to public safety and national security. In a recently released press statement, the Minister said the intelligence-led operation was conducted on January 2nd and involved Police and Defence personnel acting on information about the presence of factory-made military grade weapons within civilian communities.
He said security forces encountered armed resistance during the operation, resulting in the fatal wounding of two suspects who were each armed with M16 assault rifles.
One member of the security forces was also shot during the exchange and later received medical treatment. The officer is now recovering.
The Minister expressed regret over the loss of life but emphasized that the presence of such weapons in civilian areas represents a grave and unacceptable risk to peace, safety, and national stability. He said military grade firearms have no place in Papua New Guinea society.
According to the operational summary cleared for release, coordinated operations were carried out at two separate locations in Tsak Village during the early hours of the morning.
At the first location, a suspect opened fire from inside a residence, wounding an officer. Security forces returned fire in what the Minister described as a proportionate response to an immediate threat.
At the second location, another armed suspect was encountered and fatally wounded after posing what authorities assessed as a direct danger to personnel on the ground. Additional illegal firearms were recovered during the operation.
Three other suspects were arrested and remained in lawful custody. They have since been transported to Mendi, where they are expected to face charges relating to illegal weapons possession and other criminal offences.
The Minister said security personnel also came under sustained fire during their withdrawal from the area, with armed individuals positioned on higher ground deliberately obstructing exit routes.
Reinforcements from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force were deployed to secure a safe extraction.
Investigations are continuing to determine how the weapons entered the area and to identify networks involved in the trafficking and supply of illegal firearms.
The Minister said the operation forms part of broader national efforts to disrupt the flow of weapons contributing to violence and instability.
He commended the conduct of police and Defence personnel involved, stating they acted within established rules of engagement and in response to imminent threats to life.
The Minister also called on leaders, commentators, and the public to act responsibly when discussing matters of national security, warning that unverified or misleading information could inflame tensions and undermine confidence in security institutions.
